Costco's Best Customers

My dinner on the plane ride home from Phoenix to Arizona last night…

Two Sunshine Burgers

Two Sunshine Burgers

I snagged this Vitabrownie from Alice's freezer on our way out. It thawed out nicely in my backpack. Lovely dessert!

I snagged this Vitabrownie from Alice's freezer on our way out the door. It thawed out nicely in my backpack. Gotta have dessert!

I always pack food for trips.  The thought of going anywhere without my healthy heather food freaks me out, and it keeps me out of the in-flight Oreo and Cheez-It snack packs.  Any other snack packers out there?  Do you get weird looks from your neighbors in-flight…maybe it was all the picture taking. :)

Chris and I returned home to gloomy weather and an empty fridge. :(

Quite bare for Heather & CD

Quite bare for Heather & CD

For some reason, we had 3 containers of lettuce.  Guess we were planning on a lot of salad eating around the holidays? Also inside was a container of homemade beef vegetable soup my  mom left us for dinner last night, (So thoughtful Mary Mc. and so good – thanks!), a tub of bleu cheese crumbles, some Egg Starters, cottage cheese, 1/2 loaf of Ezekiel bread, a bag of sun dried tomatoes, and one Vitabrownie.  Need food!

So, we went here….

Grocery Store #1

Grocery Store #1

Chris and I love Costco.  In fact, Chris won’t purchase anything unless it comes from here or Target…I’m learning, but not quite there yet…but CD, they don’t sell Mountain Hardwear or Patagonia at Costco :( …Anyway, we eat so much fresh produce that buying in bulk is not a problem.  We save thousands of dollars annually by buying most of our weekly groceries at Costco.  We’re weekend regulars and know all the cashiers by name.  Love it!

The Goods

The Goods

We racked up…Flat Out bread, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bell peppers, Laughing Cow and cottage cheese…so many nutritious eats.  Chris even found a technical long sleeve shirt for $11.  Not pictured – Radley’s new dog bed.  They have THE BEST dog beds at Costco!

Now, that's a Chris & Heather fridge!

Time for lunch.

Cottage cheese stuffed egg white omelet with veggie stir-fry

Followed by a little something sweet…

Cup 'o Delights

Cup 'o Delights

Hidden under all that whipped cream was a warm Vitabrownie on a bed of peanut butter.  Sometimes, I put the PB in the bottom of the cup…save the best for last, ya know?

Then it was off to join Cherie for my birthday pedicure (Cherie, my toes thank you!) and MORE grocery shopping.

The rest of this week's goods

The rest of the goods

Much to CD’s dismay, Costco does not carry everything we need.  After a trip to both Kroger and Whole Paycheck…I mean Whole Foods, looks like we’re set for a while.  Several of my non-cooking friends ask me how I do it…Where do you find the time, much less the energy for all the shopping?  Do you really cook like that everyday? First off, I love grocery stores.  Malls – not my thing, but I could spend hours in a gourmet food shop or health food store.  The nut butter aisle, the freezer stocked full of colorful ice-cream containers, the rows of fruit in the produce section…works of art I tell you!  Food is one of my passions, and although I do invest a lot of time  in buying and preparing it, I never tire of writing out my shopping list or preparing a healthy dinner. I enjoy every minute of it!

How about you?  Love or loathe the grocery store?  What is your idea of the perfect dinner…spending hours in the kitchen making the most amazing meal or picking up the phone and ordering take-out?  Me, I’ll take a good cookbook, my cast iron skillet, and a stocked fridge over pizza delivery any day!

omygosh that “cup o’ delights” sounds/looks amaaazing! i love costco too!! but don’t go that often – not to the point of knowing all the cashier’s names at least!!! impressive!! =)

me, i love both! (eating out and cooking something up). sometimes i feel i need the break to not cook, but i don’t want takeout thats going to be loaded in oil or butter – something i am going to feel okay about eating.

I LOVE grocery stores. Love love love them. On the weekends sometimes I go at night when its quiet, and just kind of browse. Okay that makes me sound like a loser. I really need to be better at making lists though, I usually just sort of go with the flow.

Oh, and I pack food everywhere I go…absolutely everywhere. I went to the city for a weekend a few months ago with my friend, and by the end of the trip, she was referring to my purse as “The Magical Bag of Food”. Why eat crap when you eat stuff that you know you love, and you know is good for you?? That’s how I feel anyway…and I feel quite good about it!

haha ya, the weird looks are stares of jealousy :D I could wander costco for hours…I’m an only child w/just my mom so the thought of going through that much food astounds me, i love it! My costco really doesn’t sell healthier stuff like flat outs or LC cheese tho, bummer…I can stock up on camera’s, sweatpants and fruit though! I’m glad your trip was great and now your ready to go with the fooood.

I love the grocery store too. My dad is a big wig with Thriftway so I literally grew up in a grocery store and was checking groceries as soon as I had a work permit. I still have all the produce codes memorized. It is fascinating, watching what people buy, trying the new products, facing all the pretty boxes and cans on the shelves. Hmm…I’m seeing the connection here with food blogging…interesting!

I’m also with you on the joy of preparing your own meals at home. I love the weekends when I have extra time to cook. Its a beautiful thing!

SUNSHINE BURGERS!!!!!!!! Mmm…

I LOOOOOOVE food-shopping!! Whole Foods is literally my second-home, haha – they know me there by name!! :-D

And I love cooking/eating at home – it’s fun to prepare my own meals and for my family.

I love, love, love Costco!!!
Guess what – Costco now sells Chobani in a 12-pack for only $11.69! They also sells those big boxes of Boca Burgers, Kashi waffles, Healthy Choice Fudge Bars – all my favorite healthy foods!
Along with Flatouts, they have an even BETTER light wrap – they’re called Roll-Ups. They have 10 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, only 110 calories, and they’re thicker and tastier than Flat-Outs. Look for them in the bread section next time you go!

Tracey,
Where do you live? I am green with envy – 12 Chobanis for $11.69?!? I will request some at my local Costco – they need to start stocking the Greek yogurt! I saw Roll-Ups once, but didn’t buy them, and now I don’t think they have them anymore. :( I’ll be on the lookout. Thanks Tracey!

Wow that is quite a haul of food!

I don’t see how people don’t cook every day. I love to grocery shop as well and I look at cooking as a way to un wind after a long day, cooking is my way to relax and I love it!

i’m totally the same way, i LOVE grocery stores, and wandering around the isles, slowly, to see what’s there is one of my favorite things to do :)

I love grocery stores, I used to bug my mom when I was little to go along. Now I’ve worked in them for the last nine years. There is only one store that gets a bigger reaction out of me than a new grocery store (IKEA).

I am totally a snack packer too, you should see my car! Snacks galore!

Mel, so jealous…I’m dying to go to an Ikea!

Ya know, I don’t know why I always rule out places like Costco and Sams. I just think that they won’t carry healthier type foods and so we never go there – just spend a ton of money at publix, whole foods and trader joe’s. Maybe I should check it out!

Those sunshine burgers look so yummy… I need to try those, too!

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 5, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Hey Mandy,
Definitely give Costco a try. I haven’t had as much luck with Sam’s. I know it varies from region to region, but our Costco has tons of healthy eats, and they are really good about stocking requested items. Good luck! Oh, and yes…Sunburgers – I thought they were a little weird at first, but now I’m obsessed. Check the freezer section at Whole Foods.

hi Heather!
We love Sams Club too. I wish they sold organics more, however. I am a nerd and try to only do organic produce, or at least 95% of the time! ;) We do love to buy nuts and the big daddy honey container and egglands best eggs and stuff like that. When I was running, we always got the huge container of advil! ha. Reason #547 why I love yoga, much less advil buying. hehee

Hope you have a yummy day! LOVE the pb on the bottom of the bowl idea!!! XOXO

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 5, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Hey Polly, you are definitely not a nerd for buying only organic. I try, but it’s so pricey. I need to better about looking for sales. Yes, PB on the bottom…soooo gooood!

Wow – can I come over to your place? It’s rare that I say this but I love how you eat!! I also love Costco but sadly there isn’t one within a 30-mile radius in this frozen wasteland I live in. And Sam’s club is NOT the same.

And, you are giving me so many great ideas to shop for…Costco is on my list this week – I cannot wait.

Welcome back. Glad you had a good time in AZ.

ah i love grocery shopping! i could spend hours and hours at the store… too bad i don’t have that much time :(

my perfect meal is something made by me that is delicious and healthy. why order take out when you can create something yourself to fit your own needs? i am always customizing what i order so usually its just easier to make it myself. glad i love to cook!

I have never had Sunshine Burgers, how are they? Are they sold in any major stores?

I hear you on the fridge. Somehow it was magically sparse after the holidays!

I am definitely a snack-packer too, and yes, always funny looks – or perhaps they are looks of envy :)

Reply

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 5, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Hey Alisa, Ha – looks of envy…you’re so right! Sunshine burgers are really good – no gluten, soy, or dairy. I find them in the freezer section at Whole Foods, but they only come 3 to a box. At first, I thought they tasted kind of funky, but now they are my favorite veggie burger. The Garden Herb flavor is so tasty.

That is so sweet that your mom left you soup- tooo sweet!

I love grocery shopping! Right now in the apartment we have no room for food. As soon as we move, I will be getting another BJs/Costco/or Sam’s club membership!

COSTCO!!!!!!!!!
i swear, i don’t go there just for the food samples…but hey, that’s a plus isn’t it?

i love getting their flat out wraps, the frozen goods always have some great pickings, fruit and vegs., ENERGY BARS (larabars, clif, etc!!!) are all good deals…

food shopping is great! looks like you are stocked!

Dinner on the plane looks good…but the book your reading looked even better ;)

I love that you love Costco so much…because you know I do, too! My family especially enjoys their prepared foods. So I guess that’s my ideal meal – a little bit takeout and a little bit homemade. I could be like Sandra Lee on the Food Network!

Eating Bender, always happy to spread the love of Costco, and thanks again for introducing me to the cranberry goat cheese. I’m going to serve that from now on whenever I have people over. A huge hit last time!

It’s definitely smart to pack snacks for the planes. When i went to Spain, my mom signed up my family for a vegetarian meal and they actually turned out vegan and quite good! They were chocked full of veggies and not exactly fresh but seasoned and sauced and marinated enough to be enjoyable. I was pleasantly surprised- after all, it’s tough packing enough snacks for almost 24 hours of traveling! Especially when you are coming from Spain, where you don’t have any Trader Joes, Whole Foods, or the likes :)

I am so disappointed. We went on our regular run to Costco this past week and they are no longer carrying the MaraNatha Almond Butter!! My son has a peanut allergy and we love the almond butter. It is such a good buy there and now I need to search out a new place to buy it. They are carrying another brand of almond butter, although it contains eggs and my son is allergic to eggs as well…any suggestions? Thanks!
