Dessert for Breakfast

This morning, I woke up and ate this…

Oatmeal Custard

Oatmeal Custard

You’re intrigued, aren’t you?  I have a love/hate relationship with oats.  Love my oatmeal, but it never seems to keep me going until lunch…until this morning.  I’ve tried several different mix-ins in the past, but this combo was a winner!  I’ve been eyeing Sarah’s morning oats with egg whites over at LovIn My Tummy for a while now.  (Sarah is hilarious – please stop by her blog if you have not done so already!) I wanted an oatmeal recipe higher in protein as the addition of protein powder alone wasn’t enough for me.  Then Sarah from Tales of Expansion sent me her recipe for oatmeal custard with eggs, and I knew the time had come….I declared today Oatmeal Saturday…not to take away from National Yoga Day, but more about that later. :)

I basically followed Sarah’s instructions using 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup vanilla hemp milk, 1/2 cup water, and 2 egg whites.  I whisked the liquids over medium-low heat until they began to thicken and then added my oats, cooking them for about 7-8 minutes while stirring often.  I then removed them from the stove-top and covered the pot allowing the oats to cool and thicken a bit more.  After about 2 minutes, I added 1/2 scoop vanilla Jay Robb protein powder, a sprinkle of carob chips, and a spoonful of Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter. Then I thought, who eats custard without whipped cream?  I don’t!  The stats: 485 calories, 18 grams of fat (33%), 53 grams of carbs (43%), and 30 grams of protein (24%).  I think the carob chip/whipped cream combo was a bit much at 8 AM, but my decadent breakfast kept me satiated for about 4 hours.  I loved the addition of egg whites as they made my oats much creamier.  I will be making this again.

After breakfast, I wanted to bake.  So, I made this…

Cinnamon Oat Bread

Cinnamon Oat Bread

I was anxious to use the Hershey’s Cinnamon Chips that the lovely Tri to Cook sent me this week.  My boss has been requesting some baked goods, and so this one is for him.  However, Chris did manage to taste-test a few scraps as I was wrapping up the loaf and gave the bread two thumbs up.  The recipe is as follows:

2 cups oat flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup sour milk (I used vanilla hemp milk + 1 TBSP vinegar)

1/2 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup chopped pecans

5 oz. Hershey’s Cinnamon Chips.

Sift dry ingredients together.  Stir in remaining ingredients.  Bake in a greased loaf pan 45-50 minutes at 350 degrees.  Let cool 10 minutes before slicing.  Easy & delicious!  Thanks again Tri to Cook!

In honor of National Yoga Day, I tried out a yoga studio I’d never been to called Kali Yuga Yoga.  I took the Vata + Pitta (Wind & Fire) class: The Vata + Pitta session takes the active Vinyasa/flow practice of the Vata class into a very warm room (85+ degrees), embodying the concept of Power Yoga.

Loved it!  It was very similar to the Power Yoga class at Hot Yoga Nashville, but more challenging.  The instructor was great, although she had a bit of a foul mouth.  I was a little surprised when she said, “OK, lets get into some balancing shit” prior to our Half Moon and Warrior 3 poses, but she didn’t sound derogatory or anything…she was just being herself, and we all laughed.  I enjoyed her teaching style, and the class kicked my booty.  The exciting news is that I noticed even more improvements in my postures!  I’d like to attend more classes at this studio.  It’s a bit of a drive, but their rates are much cheaper than other studios in town...and there was good music which always makes me happy. :) (Thanks again Jill for the recommendation!)

The only bad thing about today’s yoga was that my left hamstring felt really tight.  I wonder if I overdid the stretching yesterday?  I got home and loved on my hammies with our Foam Roller.

Everyone should own one of these...especially all you runners out there!

If you’re still unsure about yoga, check out Polly’s yoga video at Yoga is Yummy.  It’s only 9 minutes long.  Come on, we can all spare 9 minutes, and Polly is the cutest!  Love her.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I have goto to try that Oatmeal custard!!!!

I wanted to try a new studio today, but I had to go to the apple store to get my phone switched and it took forever. So sad, but I guess there is next year!

I’ll have to try the custard; oats never hold me either. Hooray for yoga day! I only did a short routine (there weren’t any free classes closeby) but it was still very enjoyable. I love yoga :)

Awwww Heather…

I just passed the laptop to my husband and said READ THIS! You are too sweet. I’m glad you GET me.

Also glad you tried the egg whites. It is by far the most satiating breakfast I have found. Way to add the whipped cream–atta girl!
Oh, and Jay Robb is hot! I have to find that protein powder if only to stare at his mugging at the camera on the package ;)

I can’t believe your yoga instructor had such a potty mouth. I would have been laughing too. At least she didn’t ask you to move your “shit”!

You’ve sold me…you tried my oats, I’ll go find a roller.

Enjoy your Sunday, girl!

I love my foam roller and use it every day. A few months ago I had to buy a new one b/c my old one was permanetely sunk down in the middle from using it every day! The custard oats look awesome!

HA! I got my days mixed up…so I won’t get to see you. And…sounds like you experienced the “Amy.” Yea… at least you didn’t get the F word…during the week that was a given. I’m sure she kicked your bootie good – I’m now afraid of her…and don’t go to her class anymore (almost passed out last time).

Congrats on venturing to the ‘hood for Yoga!!

Hi Jill! Loved Kali Yuga Yoga so much – such a sweet and warm space! I thought the class you almost passed in was taught by someone else. I asked Amy if the class was pretty advanced, and she said, “No, no headstands or anything as I am not that advanced.” Whatever! I was so challenged and dripping with sweat! Even though I enjoyed it, I was wiped out. I didn’t even really want dinner…just a hot bath and bed. Hopefully, our paths will collide at Kali Yuga soon. :)

I WANT YOUR BREAKFAST AND SWEETBREAD, PLEASE!!

Hell yes for yoga, as you know ;-)

Sarah January 25, 2009 at 7:37 am

Haha, us Sarahs know our oatmeal :-) . So glad you decided to give it a shot. This combo always does a great job of holding me over, too. Way to dessertify it!

And, Heather, that cinnamon oat loaf looks incredible — perfectly flaky on top.

I’ve never used a foam roller because I’m embarrassed to ask how at the gym, so thanks for the link to that how-to! I will try it next time I go.

Lindsay January 25, 2009 at 8:15 am

so i’m totally drooling over your breakfast today – it looks so decadent and beautiful :)

have a great sunday! i think i’m in a baking mood now too!

Beadie January 25, 2009 at 8:21 am

I love custard oatmeal, I picked that recipe up in my weightwatchers days!

I CAN NOT imagine any of my yoga teachers saying the word shit.

polly January 25, 2009 at 8:56 am

HEATHER is the cutest!! =) XOXO

Holy Moly for potty mouth yogi! I would have giggled too, but been surprised for sure! ;) Happy Sunday oaty-yogi. XOXO

Jen January 25, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Thanks for the bread recipe! yummy! :)

Erin January 25, 2009 at 7:10 pm

Nom NOM! So good Heather! I hope your hammie lets up a little! :/

Deb January 25, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Looks yummy !!

How do you like the vanilla Jay Robb protein powder? I have been thinking of trying it.

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 25, 2009 at 7:23 pm

Deb, I love Jay Robb. No artificial ingredients and it’s sweetened with Stevia. Try it!

Andrea [bella eats] January 25, 2009 at 9:43 pm

We have a foam roller! I LOVE it…so good for my hamstrings and hips. I’ve never seen someone else with one! My awesome chiropractor recommended it for my hubb and I.

Thanks so much for the advice on my injury, I really appreciate it! I will definitely check into the myofascial release therapy…my chiropractor always has great recommendations for therapists so I’m sure she’ll have a suggestion.

I love oats for breakfast, I think its my favorite stick-with-me meal. But, I’ve never tried them with egg whites. We have an abundance of eggs right now so I think I’ve just figured out a way to use some up… :) Nut butter is a must for me, it makes the difference of sticking with me for one hour or four.

I missed my favorite yoga class this weekend. :( I’m so jealous of all of your studio options! There aren’t many classes in town that work with my schedule…

Have a great week!

Kersten January 25, 2009 at 10:35 pm

The foam roller is really popular at the gym, and Andrea@Caretoeat told me yesterday I’m missing out not having one. I’ve been so bad at stretching, period.

eatingbender January 25, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Ok Heather, I must try this oatmeal custard! I’ve had oats with egg whites before, but somehow adding the word “custard” just makes it seem so much better. I think it’s also the whipped cream ;)

Cute pic on the foam roller! I’ve actually never used one but have heard they are fabulous, so perhaps I’ll check one out next time I go to the gym.

carolinebee January 25, 2009 at 11:13 pm

I want one toooo! And I would’ve just put the egg whites in the oats while they were cooking, so I’m glad you properly instructed us doing the liquid part first :D

gina (fitnessista) January 26, 2009 at 8:21 am

FollowMyWeigh January 26, 2009 at 11:38 am

yum those oats look really good, i may have to try that one day!

lissa10279 January 26, 2009 at 1:15 pm

I LOVE custard oatmeal but now that I eat breakfast at work, I never make it!! Thanks for the reminder about it though — sounds heavenly. And I usually do it with one egg — not just the whites. That way I get some of the good stuff in the yolk.

Katie January 26, 2009 at 1:55 pm

That bread looks sooo yummy. Cinnamon chips? I’ve never heard of them.

Gina January 26, 2009 at 7:43 pm

When I was vegetarian I ate LOTS of oatmeal with egg whites. A surprising combination, but it works so well!

I love those foam rollers, I don’t use them as often as I should though!

Erica January 26, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Hey lurve! Sorry I have been such a bad commenter this weekend. Your morning oatmeal looks awesome. I just got some of that protein powder and cannot wait to try it. I plan to just mix it in with milk or almond milk. Does it taste ok like that??? Love the pic of you and your foam roller ;)

nicole January 29, 2009 at 9:31 am

All your meals look so delicious!
