24 hours with NO meat, dairy products, or eggs…I did it!
Breakfast:
Brick in the belly...again
To get the day started, I had another heart healthy serving of warm goodness. In the mix: 3/4 cup oat bran, 1.5 cups water, & a pinch of salt. Once the oat bran was done cooking, I added pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, and 1 TBSP ground flax. The toppings: 1 oz of chocolate soy milk, 3 crushed walnuts, and 1 TBSP almond butter. I added flax and walnuts to get in some omega 3′s as I WOULD NOT be taking my usual fish oil supplements. No fish oil for vegan day!
Next up…lunch:
Veggies galore with a berry delicious dessert
In my bowl o’ goodness: leftover roasted vegetables, tofu scramble with vegan cheddar cheese (that actually melted!), and raw bacon (dehydrated eggplant with spices). For dessert, I had berries with nut butter a la Melissa.
Snacky snack:
Melted carob bliss
Dinner:
More vegetables - Why are you so good, broccoli...why?
On my plate was one Garden Herb Sunshine burger (my last one
) along with more roasted veggies, Trader Joe’s BBQ sauce, and hummus.
Evening snack:
Looks good, huh?
Yeah, well it tasted a bit funky. The culprit…
Dirt...uh, I mean hemp protein powder
I wanted some vegan protein powder that did not contain soy. I’m slowly reintroducing soy back into my life as I developed an intolerance for it about 3 years ago. I did’t want to overdo it and figured hemp would be a nice alternative. Check out the nutrients in just one serving:
9 grams of digestible protein
8 grams of dietary fiber
800 mg of Omega-3
2,300 mg of Omega-6 with GLA
All 10 Essential Amino Acids
Essential Vitamins and Minerals including: Vitamin E, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Iron.
I mixed one serving with 1/2 cup pureed butternut squash and 2 ounces of almond milk…I then covered that up with some more almond milk because it had this eerie green color. I added some TJ’s Fiber twigs, cinnamon Puffins, and peanut butter. Once I got past the color, it didn’t actually taste that bad, but I definitely prefer my
Jay Robb whey protein powder.
To prove that vegans can eat a well balanced diet, I measured and weighed EVERYTHING that went in my mouth for the entire day. I’ll admit to calorie counting, but keeping up with every last ounce was a total chore and so time consuming. To those of you who do this on a daily basis, it’s not worth it! Listen listen listen – your body will tell you how much you need. I promise.
The stats for my entire day: 1804 calories, 73.4 grams of fat (35%), 237.2 grams of carbs (48%), 86.3 grams of protein (16%), and 71.5 grams of fiber.
My nutrient intake according to
Fitday:
My daily intake was a bit lacking in selenium, but not by much. My B-12 level was way low, but the only sources of B-12 are animal products, and therefore, a lot of vegans supplement their diets with fortified foods or a B-12 vitamin. I was also low on Vitamin D, but so is the rest of America. Unless you spend all day long out in the sun or consume Vitamin D fortified foods/beverages, I guarantee your levels are probably low too. I take a mulit-vitamin everyday along with Vitamin D liquid drops to make sure all bases are covered.
What did I learn from my day of vegan eats? Well, I definitely prefer egg white omelets with Laughing Cow Light cheese to tofu scramble. However, I CAN live without dairy…although some Greek yogurt would have made my berry bowl at lunch just a little more perfect. My day consisted of more fruit than normal, but I tried not to go overboard on the simple sugars. All in all, it was a very satisfying day. Everything tasted wonderful…well, almost everything. No more dirty late night snacks for me! Join me tomorrow for a hemp smoothie instead. Happy Monday everyone!

carob + Sunshine burger + Living Harvest hemp perotein + broccoli + Puffins + oatmeal = YOU LOVE VEGGIEGIRL’S FAVORITE FOODS!!
Great post! Glad you made it through no dairy/no meat day!! That is a huge accomplishment. I can def do no meat but no dairy is tough for me. The dairy subs aren’t really all that great. I have been trying to use the almond milk but it does nothing for my coffee! I did have rice protein powder today in yogurt which is fabulous! I plan to post about it soon. Love love carob! Thanks for this inspiring and informative post- as always…you ROCK!
Ew, I didn’t like that hemp powder either! I felt like I was drinking sand!
Congratulations on your vegan day! I think you did fabulously. I’m especially loving the oats, tofu scramble, raw bacon (awesome idea!), and dinner. I totally agree, why is broccoli so damn good?!!?
About the B12-try finding some Nutritional Yeast. It has all the B12 you need and is excellent in tofu scrambles. It gives it such a cheesy taste!
Nutritional yeast is a hugely popular source of vitamin B12 for vegans. Also, its common for non-veggies to be low in B12 too.
How was your fake cheese? I have yet to find a brand I can tolerate.
I never use soy protein powder, I try to limit my soy also…even though I don’t have a sensitivity to it. Hemp…is so good for you, but so expensive. I use a rice and pea blend.
I’m glad that your vegan day was successful
I’m glad you had a good vegan day. All the food looks delicious. I understand missing yogurt though. I don’t know how many times I’ve made something and thought “Wow, that was vegan until I added yogurt!” I love everything you ate, especially dinner and that banana goodness!
Yippee Vegan-Heather! Almond Butter is most certainly vegan (YESSSS! & soy-free!). Did you make sure the veggie cheese doesn’t contain any casein or milk derivatives? Hemp powder has a strong “earthy” (dirty!) taste… I’ve been using soy, so can’t help ya there! Bravo!
I’m glad you had a vegan day today!
All your eats look so good
(mmm.. nut butters, broccoli, carob chips, sunshine burger!).
You know I’m all over that almond butter giveaway, haha..
See, it’s easy being vegan!
I never tried hemp powder, but I think I’ll pass after reading your comments on it. Thanks for the warning.
Congrats on your vegan day–all your food looks terrific! I agree, weighing and measuring everything all the time would be a drag.
Those vegan eats look wonderful!
I hear you on the hemp protein. I bought some at WF and took it BACK! I couldn’t do it. A little TOO earthy for me. YIKES
Nice on the vegan eats! You even have me drooling and I am far from vegan!
hmmm, hemp powder, eh?
Congrats on your vegan day! This was very inspiring, I may have to try it sometime. Did you really have to plan for it? Or do you have most of the items you ate in your pantry all the time? I could definitely go meat-free (and did for 9 months) but dairy would be tough. I love my greek yogurt!
Lady, you just let me know next time you’re in NYC and I will make you tonight’s Goddess Rice…but only if you make me that bowl of veggies and eggplant bacon you had for lunch! Only fair.
did you like the berries and nut butter!!!!???? soooooooooooo good! i could have it everyday!!!
and actually now that i see the hemp powder you used, mine is different…i’ll recheck the name for you asap!
Hey Melissa. Loved the berries and nut butter. Once again, you know how to do it up right!
You did awesome! I love the fruit with lunch – yum
Umm hello yummy eats!!! The lunch salad is right up my alley! Go you no dairy! I would not be able to let it go yet. I was lactose intolerent for many years of my childhood and now LOVE milk! Skim of course, but I know it is not all that great and you can find calcium and such in other foods. The hemp powder looks intersting> nice flavor!
I could go vegetarian i think…but never vegan! i love my dairy!!!
your posts are always so full of great info Heather!! A+
Happy Tuesday!
Congratulations on making your 24 hour goal! Your lunch looks just wonderful!
aww you did so well being vegan for the day!! isn’t it hard?! you realize how much you miss the non-vegan goodies. but any meal labeled veggies galore is a winner in my book
I’ve got to go get some yogurt, I’ll be right back.
Ahh…better.
I’m glad you survived vegan day and can now return to licking the little broken piece out of the Laughing Cow package like I do.
The hemp powder gets “A” for effort, but really how could it compete with no smokin’ hot Jay Robb on the package?!!
At least hummus and nut butter are vegan, can I get an amen?!?
Great job Heather! Everything you ate looks delicious – esp the banana with carob chips – lord.
DAMN.
Id say BETTER YOU THAN ME but it all looks pretty damn good as well.
I could do one day—but that’s probably it.
I think.
Awesome vegan day!!!
I ALMOST bought some of that protein powder but I really don’t know what to do with it. I have never been a protein powder kind of girl.
That protien powder looks very interesting. I hate most protien powders though. Great job on going vegan for the day.
Great job on the veganism! I love the banana with carobs in the middle! I need that now!
I like how you analyzed your intake (just for the day)! I think I could go vegan for awhile, but I might miss the eggs and cheese and yogurt.
I love your banana w/ the carob by the way.
The best part of this is the banana with carob. I can’t buy carob chips because I eat them all, but I love to order them on my frozen yogurt!
You’re awesome. I don’t know how you do it but you did great being vegan! Sorry about eating dirt but that bana snack looks so good!
I can’t wait to see what other adventures you come up with!
Yay for vegan goodness day! All your eats look amazing. And who says vegans don’t get enough protein? 86 grams of protein? Yowza?! Are you going to do this again?
Hey Andrea. I think I am going to work on giving up dairy, but I love eggs so much. We’ll see…I have a huge stock of Laughing Cow cheese to work my way through first.
congrats on your vegan day! it’s so fun to read about little experiments like this
Congrats! The banana with carob snack looks super delicious btw.
wow – congrats on your awesome 24 hr challenge
i’ve done the no meat thing many times, but never the vegan thing! you kicked butt
i am loving that bowl of oats & that veggie-packed dinner – yum!!!!!!!!!! hope you had a great monday!
Good Job on making it through. I went vegan for 6 months, I have to be honest, it was the healthiest I ever felt in my life. I did miss my dairy though. I didn’t like any of the vegan yogurts, cheeses, etc.
What brand of fish oil supplements do you take & do they give you the fish burps like I have heard about?
What flavors of Jay Robb PP have you tried? I am ordering soon & thinking of the pina colada but a little nervous… price + new flavor !! I usually go with vanilla from my local health food store.
Hey Deb,
I take Nature Made or Kirkland brand fish oil from Costco. My husband and I did a little research. They both seem to be of high quality, and they’re pretty inexpensive compared to others brands. I believe they’re both enteric coated as I haven’t had any problems with tasting them again.
I have tried all the Jay Robb flavors as we sell it at my office. I love vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Not a big fan of the pina colada or tropical dreamsicle. I would call the company for a sample packet first before ordering an entire canister. Hope this helps. Have a good weekend!
