Rolled Oats Just Aren't The Same

by HEAB on March 23, 2009

AAAAHHH…totally slept through my alarm this morning.  Even though I don’t have to be at the studio until 6 AM, I like to get up at 5 so I can have some coffee and take care of the pups before heading to yoga.  This morning, I shot out of bed at 5:30, switched the coffee pot on, threw some food at the dogs, and ran out the door, my travel mug brimming with Coffee-Mate coffee. :)  Whew, made it. Class was amazing.  I can’t say enough good things about my yoga journey this month.  Our instructor told us she loves seeing her students go into Child’s Pose when they need it as there are no egos in yoga.  Love that.  In the past, I’ve heard horrific stories of yoga teachers acting like drill sergeants.  I could not imagine!  If you ever get the chance to take a class from Cassie at Hot Yoga Nashville, I highly recommend it.

I AM OUT OF OAT BRAN!  Hello Mr. Quaker Fairy, please come pay me a visit. Until I’m able to restock (or said fairy bestows more oat bran on me), it’s going to be old fashioned oats, rolled style.

Look, doesn't it look different without the oat bran?!?

Oat bran, come back!

My usual recipe for spinach oats, but I substituted rolled oats for the oat bran.  This bowl’s texture was all wrong. Must restock soon.

Lunch was new and exciting!

Jenn wins my allegience once again.

Bender wins my heart once again.

I’ve been using Eating Bender’s Humbecue sauce in and on everything I eat from pizza to salads.  Why it never occurred to me to try it with eggs, I do not know.  I was really craving an omelet filled with Laughing Cow Light cheese, but I’m off dairy.  Instead, I filled my eggy creation with Sabra sun-dried tomato hummus, and then topped it off with CD’s BBQ sauce.  (Chris likes to combine Westbrae’s unsweetened ketchup with Bone Suckin’ Sauce.  Yes, I know. My husband is brilliant!)  Last but not least, I toasted a slice of my homemade spelt bread to catch any excess hummus drippings. What a yummy meal!  Oh yeah, I also had a certain piece of fruit stuffed with almond cashew butter, but upon request, it will not be pictured. :)

More exciting news in the world of Heather McD…Sweet Dori of Dori’s Shiny Blog presented me with the E for Excellence Award:

e-award-thumb

Dori had the following to say about Heather Eats Almond Butter:

As you know, I love breakfast foods — and I really believe Heather should open a breakfast restaurant! She makes these incredible looking, innovative, healthy breakfasts every day.

Dori, thank you so much.  I’m honored.  Be sure to stop by Dori’s Shiny Blog.  The girl is hilarious, she loves to spin, eat good food, AND she was an official member of The Baby-Sitters Club fan club (Dori, I’m still completely jealous of your stationary).  How could you not love her?!? :)

P.S. – Thanks for all your comments on my Confession Post.  Seems I’m not the only one with artificial vices.  Love you guys.

Sweetie Pie March 23, 2009 at 1:40 pm

I’m glad that you are having such a positive yoga experience, and congrats on the award! I am usually happy when my lunch can be described as “new and exciting.” Yours looks tasty!! :-)

VeggieGirl March 23, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Hellllll yes for yoga!!

NO MORE OAT BRAN?!?!?!?! So sorry :-(

Hooray for a Miss Eating Bender-inspired meal!!

Congratulations on the award!!

Sarah March 23, 2009 at 1:54 pm

a serious oat bran tragedy!!

(and let me tell you, i COULD have eaten ALL of the spinach oats I made — there was only about 1 cup of dry oats in there after all — but i restrained myself. i need them to last me through the week!!)

sooo good though. thanks again for the idea! you totally deserve that award because my life would not be complete without the things you have given me: (1) avocado chocolate mousse; (2) homemade nut butter; (3) spinach oats … and many more to come i am sure!

orangepop March 23, 2009 at 1:56 pm

aww, come back Quaker Fairy! Your oats aren’t so green!!!

Missy (Missy Maintains) March 23, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Congrats on the award! Your breakfasts really are amazing!! I would love some spinach oats! Yum!

Beadie @ What I Ate Yesterday March 23, 2009 at 2:00 pm

I think I might curl up in a little ball and cry all day if I were out of oat bran. Sigh. A girl wants what a girl wants :)

Sarah March 23, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I have totally contemplated Humbecue eggs, I am so glad you tried it so I know it is safe ;) Hummbecue pasta is my next experiment.

Babysitters Club!!!! I totally wanted to be Stacy, even if it meant having diabetes. I grew up WISHING I had diabetes. Is that not warped?

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 23, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Sarah,
Ha ha – I always wanted to be Dawn with her long blond hair and CA good looks. I was a total book nerd, and I think I read the entire series twice. Humbecue pasta…great idea! I will be stealing it soon. :)

Maggie March 23, 2009 at 2:27 pm

I forgot that you guys eat unsweetened ketchup – yay!

It’s really awesome about your yoga. I actually have been feeling out of it for the past week or so… I need to start up my daily yoga habit again. Well, I’ve been doing it daily – just shorter sessions and nothing serious. I do have my level 2 teacher training next month so I want to gear up for that. I guess my hohum attitude is partially due to the fact that I’m just feeling hohum about everything recently – just not sure where I want to go next.

Hope you get some oat bran soon :)

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 23, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Maggie,
Sorry you’re feeling hohum. I’ve been there, and I promise things will work out as they’re meant to be. Doesn’t always seem that way, but hang in there my friend. Everything will fall into place soon. :)

Erin March 23, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Your yoga journey sounds so wonderful, it almost makes me wish I got up at 5 AM everyday for yoga. Almost :)
I am pretty spoiled on oat bran too, but old fashioned are still yummy.
Lovin the lunch, That combo is to die for. What would I do without other bloggers? I will probably be trying that omelette this week!

Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) March 23, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Lunch looks divine! Glad you made it to yoga!! SO glad you are enjoying your month of yoga yuminess!

Gina March 23, 2009 at 2:46 pm

I’ve only been using oat bran for a few weeks, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back to rolled oats! And I totally have you to thank :-D

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 23, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Gina,
You’re welcome :)

Shelby March 23, 2009 at 3:07 pm

NO OAT BRAN?!?!

marafaye March 23, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Seriously, that looks like the best lunch ever! I keep meaning to make Bender’s humbecue sauce, and i just keep forgetting!
Every time i run out of a current favorite, I tend to try something new…that’s how I got into oat bran in the first place!!

Congrats on the award, you totally deserve it :)

Holly March 23, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Hmmm…maybe I should give this oat bran thing a shot? Can they be nuked? I hate the nuking, but it’s a necessity at the office…

Ketchup + eggs = heaven. Why did I grow up thinking that was gross??

I agree with Dori! We need a HEAB breakfast joint. :-)

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 23, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Holly,
I don’t have a microwave, and so I’ve never tried nuking oat bran. But here are some directions I found for ya from Bob’s Red Mill:

To make delightful breakfast cereal, add 1/4 tsp salt to 2 cups water and bring to a boil. Slowly stir 2/3 cup Bob’s Red Mill Organic Oat Bran Cereal into the boiling water and cook for approximately 2 minutes. Microwave Instructions: Combine the cereal, water and salt in a microwave bowl and microwave in High for approximately 2 minutes. Makes enough for two. Serve with milk and honey or better still, brown sugar. Add sliced fruit or nuts to make your cereal even more delicious and nutritious.

Yes, oat bran is delightful. You must try soon. :)

Ketchup + eggs = heaven…Agreed!

eatlivelovedream March 23, 2009 at 3:57 pm

Yay! for your reward! You totally deserve it! I always look forward to your posts, + your the sweetest person ever it seems!

raspberryrunner March 23, 2009 at 4:17 pm

haha, you should open a breakfast restaurant!!!

katecooks March 23, 2009 at 4:24 pm

haha, just caught the confession post. thank goodness someone else loves coffee mate as much as i do! last night it was magic shell on my ice cream…who even knows what’s in that stuff??? all i know is that it’s BLISSSS

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 23, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Katecooks,
Do not even get me started on my love of Magic Shell…AMAZING stuff, whatever it is. :)

Michelle Hisae March 23, 2009 at 4:46 pm

I totally hear ya on the rolled oats not living up to oat bran! I have to eat like 2x as much of the rolled oats to fill me up!

lisaheartspizza March 23, 2009 at 4:56 pm

if an instructor ever tried to take child’s pose away from me I don’t even know what I would do!!! Those oats look completely different but it also looks like your lunch would make a pretty sweet breakfast in case you miss your oatbran too much and your oats just won’t do.

peaceandpeanutbutter March 23, 2009 at 5:40 pm

I am a fellow yoga enthusiast, and I love that you can put your ego aside for an hour or so and just ‘be’. It’s such a freeing experience. I’m glad you have such a wonderful instructor!!

Sorry to hear your out of oatbran!!! But your lunch sure does look delicious! I love that u filled your omelette with hummus..such a great idea :-)

Have a lovely night,

Erika

Erin March 23, 2009 at 6:16 pm

That is the worst – being rushed in the morning! I’m so glad you loved your yoga. I can’t believe the egos that DO pop up in yoga class. Mine included!
I’m surprised that you noticed such a diff between the oats and oat bran! I guess I don’t notice it when they’re blended? I guess you’ll have to suffer through it for the time being :)
Have a great week Heather!

Julz March 23, 2009 at 6:53 pm

Beautiful Heather <333

You deserve this award and a thousand more. You’re amazing and everyone knows it! Plain and Simple! xoxo

-PS- When are you going to teach your OWN classes? I’d take from you in a Heartbeat!!

Love to you and your hubcap, doll, xo

Dori March 23, 2009 at 6:57 pm

In response to Sarah’s comment, I also grew up wishing I had diabeted because of Stacey — awful!

Thank you so much for your sweet words! Even though you didn’t really want your rolled oats, they look so good! Your breakfasts really make me happy.

Melissa S. March 23, 2009 at 7:18 pm

oh no, no more oat bran!? MUST RESTOCK NOW!!!

Adi (oatonomy.com - repaired!) March 23, 2009 at 7:39 pm

I went on a big oat bran kick a while back, and switching back to rolled oats was foreign to my mouth! I hope your oat bran gets back to your tummy soon! :)

gina (fitnessista) March 23, 2009 at 8:07 pm

so glad that you’ve loved your yoga experience so far. i think you’re one of the number one reasons why i’ve fallen in love with yoga, especially oven :D
i FINALLY have bbq sauce (the annie’s kind) in the casa and i’m so excited to get in on the humbeque action!
hey are you going to az anytime this summer?!?
hope all is well <3

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 24, 2009 at 10:15 am

Gina,
So glad you’re loving yoga…so good for the soul, no? Nothing like a good 90 minute sweat session to start the day. :)

Can’t wait for you try some humbecue sauce – Bender is truly brilliant. I know you’ll love it.

Chris and I have been talking about going to AZ as I need some Scottsdale lovin in my life soon. He doesn’t like to go in the summer due to the heat, but we haven’t seen his parents in a while. I’ll let you know when we make plans. Would love to meet up again if we’re both there at the same time!

Erica March 23, 2009 at 8:12 pm

hahahha- if we were friends in “real life”, we would be like type A city! I always have to get up early so I can have everything in perfect Erica order before I leave ;) Glad yoga is treating you so well- your instructors sound incredible! Have you ever thought about teaching? I bet you’d be fab! Congrats on the award

RunToFinish March 23, 2009 at 8:15 pm

man I am learning all kinds of new and interesting things..spinach oats!

ttfn300 March 23, 2009 at 8:25 pm

ok, hummus and eggs, i’m going to try that. :) congrats, you are Excellent!!

eatingbirdfood March 23, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I am the same way about waking up early. I don’t have to be at work until 9 but I wake up at 7. :)

Congrats on the award lady. Sorry Mr. Quaker isn’t cutting it, but I know how you feel I don’t think I can go back to plain oats now. I can send you some oatbran if you would like!

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 24, 2009 at 10:10 am

Eatingbirdfood,
Another early bird! Don’t you love getting up with time to spare before the crazy day begins? Helps me stay sane as I do not like being in a rush. No worries on the oat bran…I’m restocking today for sure! Thanks Brittany. :)

Emily March 23, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Sorry you ran out of oat bran and its magicalness. I almost ran out of oatmeal today but had juuust enough. I should probably try oat bran because you love it so much, and everything you make with it looks delish. I really don’t mind good old fashioned oats, though. :-)

I love omelets with spicy sauce but have never tried them with hummus. Sounds like a great idea!

Congrats on the award, too, Heather! :-)

thelongweigh March 23, 2009 at 11:27 pm

I’m so glad the yoga workshop has been good to you! It sounds like you have amazing teacher!

Sorry about the lack of oatbran! I still havent tried it but I keep seeing it more and more around and think its time to try! I also think that sauce and egg combo looks delicious!

I hope you have a great week Heather!

Megan March 24, 2009 at 12:40 am

you really should have your own breakfast place, or a cookbook at the very least!! You could probably fill it just with your blended grain concoctions. they are fab & i love them :)

I love your “mug brimming with Coffee Mate.” I always have to hassle my mom because she usually adds coffee to her coffee mate, rather than coffee mate to her coffee. I can’t hardly blame you though, it’s so gooooood. :)

healthy ashley March 24, 2009 at 6:52 am

Waking up before 6 is sleeping in for you?! You’re crazy!

Congrats on the award! Id visit your breakfast place :)

And your hair looks fantastic in the photo below!

Jenn (eating bender) March 24, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Heather, I really wish we lived closer together! You are such a sweetheart and reading your posts never fails to bring a smile to my face  Humbecue omelette?! You got it, girl – I am definitely trying that soon! And Chris is definitely a genius with that BBQ combo. Huullllooo heaven!

I’m sorry the rolled oats aren’t the same. Once I finish off my tubs, I may have to make the ultimate switch to oat bran as well. It will be interesting to see what I think of all the fabulous blended grain combinations! I can’t wait!

Congratulations on your award – your blog is certainly excellent, and so are you!

Katie March 24, 2009 at 2:39 pm

Hope you find some oat bran, pronto!

runjess March 24, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Hi, just saw you on Every Gym’s Nightmare and wanted to stop by and tell you what a great job you’re doing with your health and weight loss. Very inspirational. And enjoy your CoffeeMate. Whatever gets the sweet caffeine juice down. ;)

Skinny Latte March 24, 2009 at 3:10 pm

What a great blog!! I love the look of the things you eat…especially that coconut milk icecream, and spinach oats!! Will definitely be back for more :)

Lara March 24, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Heather, Hummus in an omelette is one of those ideas that I would never, ever think of myself, but I bet it’s great! There are so many products and tips I have picked up from reading blogs…I didn’t even know what Greek yogurt was before them!
Hope you get your oatbran fix soon :)

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 24, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Lara,
The oat bran was restocked today…thank goodness. I was so sad without it!

Andrea [bella eats] March 24, 2009 at 7:29 pm

Hi Heather! I still haven’t made your blended oat bran yet, and I even have some in my fridge! If I could “beam” it over to you I would… :)

I did, however, make almond butter last weekend after being inspired by your blog I will hopefully post about it soon. Thanks for always having delicious, inspirational recipes…keep ‘em coming!

Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) March 24, 2009 at 7:56 pm
