This Morning Stinks

by HEAB on April 17, 2009

Following are the reasons why I chose this post’s title:

1. I woke up at 4:30 AM, 30 minutes before my alarm was set to go off and could not go back to sleep. Totally stinky way to start the day. :(

2. When I opened the bedroom door, I was greeted with the aroma of fermented wheat berries.  Due to my raw cheese making adventure, the entire downstairs of our house smelled like a cheese factory, and we’re not talking ooey-gooey melted mozzarella, okay?  It was beyond stinky!

3. I finished off the last of my sugar-free vanilla Coffee-Mate (hoping not to buy it again!), but my homemade cashew cream did not live up to expectations.  I’m attempting a new version for tomorrow, and I’ll share the recipe if it doesn’t stink.

4. I came home from 60 minutes of power yoga in a heated studio smelling pretty stinky.

5. Breakfast was only half stinky.

Stinky cheese tastes...interesting.

Look, no oats. :)

I scrambled some eggs with onion, bell pepper, and spinach, and topped it all with raw cheese (made from rejuvelac and sunflower seeds) and ground black pepper.  My side item of choice was a bowl of peanut butter disguised as a baked sweet potato.  The potato was excellent as were the eggs.  The raw cheese was…interesting.  It tasted a bit like um, fermented paste?  Definitely some tang to each bite.  Ashley, I’m wondering if this is similar in taste to Vegemite?  After breakfast, I blended the remaining cheese with some spices, and I’m going to try it again for dinner.  Again, if it’s any good, I’ll share the recipe with you.

6. My first client of the morning was a no-show. That stinks!

7. Let’s end on a positive note, shall we?  Why my morning was not 100% stinky: I was able to lift my top leg AND keep it up during side plank at yoga this morning, and my mom is about to treat me to lunch. :)

Happy weekend to all, and I hope it doesn’t stink!

Missy (Missy Maintains) April 17, 2009 at 11:06 am

Sorry about your morning!! That is the worst when you wake up right before you have to and can’t fall back asleep! Happens to me all the time! Love your breakfast! Hopefully lunch with mom will cheer you up!

fitforfree April 17, 2009 at 11:08 am

I’m intrigued by your cheesemaking!! Can’t wait to hear how it turns out at dinnertime. Have a wonderful stink-free lunch :-)

Clare (Clare's Two Steps Forward April 17, 2009 at 11:11 am

good for you ending on a positive note =)

I NEVER look at my clock when I wake up at night. I don’t care if I have 4 hours or 30 minutes of sleep left. I won’t know the difference if I just don’t look. It’s such an awful feeling to know taht I’ve got just 30 minutes left.

Anyways, have a nice lunch with your mom and have a great weekend!

runsarah April 17, 2009 at 11:14 am

Your breakfast looks great-even if it was stinky! I am curious about the cheese but my condo is small…not sure if my neighbours would be upset with me if I turned it into a cheese factory!

Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) April 17, 2009 at 11:22 am

Aww Heather, I hope your day gets better. And smells better too!

LOVE the idea of having sweet potato for breakfast! Talk about an energy boost! I am totally stealing your idea. =) Love ya girl!

brandi April 17, 2009 at 11:23 am

snackface April 17, 2009 at 11:37 am

Ewww stinky cheese! Sorry about the generally stinky morning. You know what though? It sounds like it’s only going to get better!

Brilliant thinking with the sweet potato for breakfast! I could totally go for that! Especially with peanut butter :) Yum, thanks for the great idea!

coco April 17, 2009 at 11:47 am

Erica April 17, 2009 at 12:10 pm

oh no! I bet your weekend will rock because your friday am was so stinky ;)

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) April 17, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Aw, that sucks that you woke up so early, but now I know the reason for your 6am email! At least it’s the weekend – yay for lunch with mommy!

Lindsey (Mrs. LC) April 17, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Boo for your first client not showing up! Back when I taught flute lessons regularly I hated it when students/ their parents called to cancel last minute. Once in college they even called to cancel after I had already started driving to their house! That was when I instituted my 24-hour notice cancellation policy or else you still have to pay. :)

And hooray for your mom treating you to lunch! Moms are the greatest. :)

Alisa - Frugal Foodie April 17, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Oh no! Bummer that the cashew cream did not work for coffee (I promise it works in other applications :) I guess there is always Silk or Wildwood Creamer in a pinch. Some people really like using vanilla Almond Breeze too.

Here’s to a morning that wasn’t 100% stinky!

raspberryrunner April 17, 2009 at 2:04 pm

what a great looking breakfast! besides the stinky cheese… lunch dates with moms are the best! have fun!

Holly April 17, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Ugh, I hate stinky mornings. At least it was a Friday stinky, not a Monday stinky. I’m anxious to hear how the cheese turns out – you are so brave! Maybe with the nicer weather you can air that shiz out.

I hope your day gets less stinky and you have a fantastic evening to make up for it. :-)

ksgoodeats April 17, 2009 at 2:29 pm

Ewwww stinky cheese!! Hope the rest of the day didn’t stink!

PS. I got a little somthin’ somethin’ in the mail today – THANK YOU!! I’m so excited to try it!

Shelby April 17, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Sorry for the bad day =(

Congratulations on the yoga though!

Ooo and lovely Sweet potato for breakfast! I don’t have the patience in the morning to wait for one to cook haha.

the dainty pig April 17, 2009 at 2:45 pm

Good job with the leg lifting in side plank! Very strong! I’m happy that despite the morning’s chaotic start, you managed to find something positive in it. There is always a little something that’s good, even if it’s not always easy to find –especially during a really “stinky” morning! Have a lovely weekend!!

the dainty pig April 17, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Good job on the side plank! So strong! I’m glad that despite the morning’s chaos, you manages to find something positive. There is usually something good lurking amongst the bad, even if it’s hard to find–especially during a really stinky morning! Have a lovely weekend, i’m sure it can only get better!

the dainty pig April 17, 2009 at 2:51 pm

The Dainty Pig,
Ha – I love receiving and reading comments. Not 1, but 3?!? I loved it. Thank you! :)

Sarah April 17, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Mine’s been stinky too. Boooo.

Hope you have a good weekend Heather. And don’t feel bad if you do end up buying the Coffeemate. I’m pretty sure its dairy free ;)

Melissa S. April 17, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Meredith April 17, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Sorry about the stinky morning! I hate waking up and not being able to fall back to sleep before my alarm goes off too.

orangepop April 17, 2009 at 4:18 pm

AaWwWw… I’m sorry. At least Mommy is taking care of you. I know you’re not a Debby Downer, so it must have been unpleasant. I posted 3 breakfasts in my latest post- 2/3 without oaties!

Alison April 17, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Oh…I’m sorry about your morning. I hate when I wake up just a little too early. But I do love when I wake up 3-4 early and know that I can just go back to sleep.

Heather (be well & take care) April 17, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Sorry about the stinky morning.

Have you tried almond milk for your coffee? Before going vegan, CoffeeMate was also my addiction. I conquered that with unsweetened vanilla almond milk + liquid stevia. It’s not AS good (that stuff is addicting!) but a pretty good replacement. There are flavored stevia drops like vanilla and hazelnut too which might be good.

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 18, 2009 at 6:13 am

Hey Heather,
I have tried almond milk in my coffee, and it didn’t do it for me. However, I think I tried it using powdered stevia which I don’t like very much…funky aftertaste, don’t you think? I have some French Vanilla stevia drops which are my new addiction. So, maybe I’ll give the almond milk another go. Why is Coffee-Mate so freaking tasty?!? :)

zestycook April 17, 2009 at 5:29 pm

Heather I am laughing pretty hard…. This post is hilarious!

Emily April 17, 2009 at 5:49 pm

ooh, sweet potato for breakfast?
seriously, is hot yoga stinky? its one type of yoga i have not tried and really want to. my olfactory is sensitive though!

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 18, 2009 at 6:11 am

Emily,
No, my hot yoga studio never stinks – they’re always cleaning it, and they let the room air out between each class. It probably smells pretty rank by the time class is over, but I’ve never noticed the smell…probably because I’m working too hard. :) I do come home completely drenched in sweat – so, no telling what I smell like. I hope you try it as I really do love the heat. My gym offers yoga, but it’s held in this huge cardio room that is kept pretty cool. Shivering while in lying in Savasana? No thanks!

Ashley April 17, 2009 at 5:51 pm

Oh, poor you Heather! It seems the last couple of days have been a little stinky.. ;-)

But you know, karma dictates that after a stinky day you deserve a fantastic day so I’m sure tomorrow will be much better!

And I really hope your raw cheese DIDN’T taste like vegemite – that would be quite unforuntate. Vegemite is really salty, a little bitter – kinda similar to the taste of beef bouillon! Not really what you look for in a cheese. Hopefully the spices will fix it up.

On the bright side, your sweet potato and nut butter combo must have been sooo yummy, and your side plank sounds exceptional! Well done!

Have a lovely weekend :-)

peaceandpeanutbutter April 17, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Hey Heather!

Sorry to hear your morning was so stinky! Mine was quite stinky, too…I woke up exhausted, even after a long nights sleep! At least it was nice out today!

Your bfast looks great, big boost of Vitamin C :-)

Hope the rest of your day was wonderful!

Peace,
Erika

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 18, 2009 at 6:06 am

haha…i know i shouldnt be laughing, bc that all totally stinks. but it was entertaining to read about. i know the EXACT smell of cheese you are talking about because a few of the health food stores i shop at have the cheese section in the entryway and i PLUG MY NOSE and race through to the rest of the store when i go there. yuck.

Jenn (eating bender) April 19, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Ugh, I hate stinky days :( Especially when they involve a lack of sleep! But I love your oat-free breakfast. And congrats on the yoga side plank – that is damn impressive! I’m off to read about your weekend adventures now…

Evan Thomas April 9, 2010 at 9:02 am

Oh yes, I know the stank of nut cheese all too well. Oh well, if I ever manage to make a good batch I’ll be sure to share the secret! But until then it looks like I’ll be buying mine.
