Dairy Comes Knocking Again

by HEAB on April 21, 2009

Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!

Note to self: Confirm all ingredients before agreeing to taste-test a product. For the second time, I was sent an item to review for my blog that contained dairy, and again, I ate it.  I’m going to be more careful about this in the future.  You live and you learn, right?

First off, thanks to the folks at Foodbuzz for allowing me to sample the new Riserva line by Buitoni.  For lunch yesterday, I ate half a serving of the Wild Mushroom Agnolotti over a bed of spinach and broccoli with Newman’s Own Sockarooni sauce. Yes, I thought about whipping up a batch of Marinutta Sauce but didn’t think mushrooms, cheese, and peanut butter sounded like the best combo. :)

Ravioli on Crack

Ravioli on Crack

Below is a description of the pasta from the Buitoni Website:

A blend of earthy mushrooms, including sweet, rustic portobellos and delicate criminis, creates an impeccable pairing with fresh-roasted garlic and imported grana padano and parmesan cheeses, wrapped inside thin layers of stone-ground semolina pasta.

Check out the filling:

Can you really go wrong with mushrooms and cheese?

Can you really go wrong with mushrooms and cheese?

Um, yes you can…when each serving contains 796 mg of sodium.  Rarely do I ever salt any of my meals, nor do I eat many packaged foods.  The mushroom cheese combo was tasty, but the salt content overwhelmed me.  That being said, I was impressed with how easy this was to prepare, just 4-6 minutes in boiling water. Even if that seems like too much work, apparently, the stuffed pasta shells make a good snack without any preparation.  Just ask my husband, who when left alone to make his dinner simply ate them straight from the package. :)  Thanks again to the folks at Foodbuzz and Buitoni!

Guess who paid me a visit yesterday?

Mara @ What's For Dinner? April 21, 2009 at 8:07 am

That is a TON of rice protein!!! I’m making that angolotti or whatever they’re called for dinner on Thursday… I’m excited to try them!

Chocolate-Covered Katie April 21, 2009 at 8:09 am

Haha you and your jay robb!

Erica April 21, 2009 at 8:14 am

You know I am insanely jealous of you and Jay Robb. Watch out I am going to start sending Mr. Hott and Sexy “private” messages on facebook. Hehe!! I slipped up on the dairy as well. I went to Publix yesterday and some how “regular” 2% cottage cheese jumped in my cart. Oops! Then it jumped in a bowl with peanut butter after dinner. Man did I pay for it almost immediately after!! :( This whole dairy thing really sucks! I mean am I never going to be able to eat regular cottage cheese ever again??

Agnolotti looks delish, but I have to agree with you on the sodium content. I don’t do very well with high salt, so I think that I’d have to skip over this product, as well.

Hoooooly protein!

elise April 21, 2009 at 8:45 am

wow…talk about hitting the jackpot with the rice protein.

i agree with the pasta. simple to prepare for sure. i didnt try it bc of the dairy thing, but we all slip up. at least you arent lactose intolerant, bc then a slip up could turn into a slip out…too gross? sorry ;)

Debbie~ April 21, 2009 at 8:49 am

Wow..lots of rice protein, looking forward to your review. The ravioli’s look delish!! Thanks for the Barney Butter code, I am just down to my last bit and need to order more:)

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) April 21, 2009 at 8:54 am

Oh man, you are about to become the ultimate rice protein expert! Interested to hear what you think…I think it’s pretty tasty! But what do I know… I have those Buitoni mushroom thingies in my fridge as well and so far they are damned with faint praise – can’t say I’m too excited to cook em up!

Thanks again for the oaties. :)

Ashley April 21, 2009 at 9:00 am

Ooops about the dairy! Hopefully you wont get any tummy aches :-S

And I must say, what is with ALL THE ADDED SALT in everything today? It’s awful and unhealthy. I rarely add salt to anything and so when I eat something salty – its completely overpowering.

Look at your protein powder stash! Lucky girl!

dailygoods April 21, 2009 at 9:26 am

haha heather i did the same thing! im not eating dairy for 30 days and i got this package, was so excited, ate it, then was like oops! it sure was delicious though!

Missy (Missy Maintains) April 21, 2009 at 9:29 am

I made the Buitoni mushrooms last night too! I thought they were delicious but I agree about the salt! There is so need for that much!

Lara (Thinspired) April 21, 2009 at 9:29 am

NO WAY!!! That is so awesome that you are all stocked up on Jay. I am so jealous ;)
Way to conquer that pasta fear…I’m sure the dairy was minimal ;) It sure looks good!

Sarah April 21, 2009 at 9:49 am

They are pasta and dairy?! And you thought this was a good idea ;)

I think its about time for MY Chris to do a guest post/review, don’t you?

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 21, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Guest post from Chris – it’s time. Agreed! :)

Michelle Hisae April 21, 2009 at 9:50 am

Whoa, girl. Did you get all those Jay Robb protein packs for FREE?? If so, they are generous people!

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 21, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Michelle,
Yes, the folks at Jay Robb are quite generous. Don’t worry, I plan to share. :)

ksgoodeats April 21, 2009 at 9:52 am

OH MY GOSH!!! BB SHIPPING CODE! I now worship you, Heather!! You have reintroduced me to my lover :)

Oh hey Jay Robb ;)

Sorry about the dairy issue – mushrooms and cheese are so good but a load of sodium, not so much!

Holly April 21, 2009 at 10:00 am

Holy sodium, batman! Yowsa. Like you, I don’t add salt to any of my foods – I guess it’s the ONE good thing my taste buds don’t really like/need. :-) But, that ravioli SURE does look good. Thank you for the review!

What are you gonna do with ALL that sexiness?! Whew! Makes me hot just thinkin’ about it.

runsarah April 21, 2009 at 10:04 am

Wow, thats a lot of sodium! When I have high sodium foods I get so thirsty it’s uncomfortable. Still looks tasty though!

amy (veganissexy.com April 21, 2009 at 10:23 am

I’m so jealous of that rice protein loot! I’m definitely going to try out the chocolate soon! Can’t wait to hear what you think…..:)

gina (fitnessista) April 21, 2009 at 11:35 am

i always feel bad when companies send me things i can’t eat. the pilot, on the other hand, loves when that happens ;)
mr. goatee man hooks it up again! can’t wait to hear what you think about that protein
have a great day!

Susan April 21, 2009 at 1:16 pm

I got a shipping quote from Jay Robb and they told me it would cost $60 to ship two bags of powder to where I am in Canada!!! Ahh!! I guess I will just have to admire him from afar…

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 21, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Susan,
Seriously? So sorry my friend. Jay needs to start selling his good north of the border!!!

Erin April 21, 2009 at 2:06 pm

I can’t wait to see the smackdown! Seriously, I am so weird that I genuinely look forward to it :)
I love love mushrooms, but agree that sounds too sodium filled. It’s rare that things aren’t though. I hate that. It makes me feel so bloated and yucky.

Shelby April 21, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Wow look at all that Rice Protein! It’s amazing =)

Pearl April 21, 2009 at 3:20 pm

:O did jay robb send you a photo of him opening his shirt, too ? ;)

Michelle April 21, 2009 at 6:12 pm

Haha I have been reading so much about this Jay Robb that I feel like I have to try it now!!

Hangry Pants April 21, 2009 at 10:38 pm

So I ate my Buitoni, liked it very much and did not even glance at the sodium. Thank you so much for pointing that out.

Also, I believe there are more free samples at the Barney Butter site.

broccolihut April 21, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Crikey! Look at all the rice protein. Way jealous.

I didn’t know the Buitoni had dairy in it either, and I agreed to sample it too. Oh, well.

MizFit April 22, 2009 at 4:08 am

Im soooo jealous.
Look at all those packets of rice-y goodness.
and I have to say again that blogher could stand to learn a LOT from FOODBUZZ!!

Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) April 22, 2009 at 1:19 pm
