Sun Warrior vs Sexy Hot, Round 2
After receiving my plethora of Jay Robb rice protein powder samples yesterday (thanks Jay!), I decided it was time for the vanilla face-off. Last week’s Rice Protein Smackdown pitted Jay Robb’s strawberry against Sun Warrior’s vanilla, and Sun Warrior came out on top. So, I thought it was only fair to give Jay another chance once I received some of his vanilla.
After an hour of hot vinyasa yoga this morning (freaking love the Pigeon!), I arrived home ready for some taste-testing. I blended 30 grams of each protein powder with 12 ounces of cold water, and then took several sips of both. The winner?
Folks we have a winner...how do we look together? (Sorry CD)
Now, I do like Sun Warrior, but I’ve never made it with just water. Usually, it gets mixed in my oats after cooking, or I blend it with a banana. Alone, it was reminiscent of vanilla…sawdust. Jay’s was not as dusty and had more of a French vanilla flavor. I won’t lie – I wanted to kiss chug Jay….The Sun Warrior? Um yeah, not so much.
I’d also like to point out the ingredient list of each as I know y’all like as short a list as possible.
- Whole-grain sprouted brown rice protein concentrate
- Natural flavor
- Stevia
- Whole Brown Rice Protein (Bio-Fermented Raw Sprouted Whole Grain Brown Rice Protein)
- Vanilla
- Carrageenan (Natural Seaweed Stabilizer)
- Xanathan Gum (Natural Bio-Fermented Stabilizer)
- Stevia
So, there you have it folks. In my humble opinion, Jay’s vanilla tastes better and has fewer ingredients – definitely a winner in my book. I’ll still be using the Sun Warrior as that is what my office currently stocks, but once Jay starts selling his rice protein in the 24 ounce size (hopefully starting next month), we’ll be selling his product as well. Can’t wait Jay!
I would like to point out that for those of you with food allergies, Jay Robb is manufactured in a facility that processes other products which may contain soy, dairy, wheat, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, peanuts, and eggs, and may contain traces of all of the above. Sun Warrior guarantees no cross-contamination for all of their products.
The folks at Jay Robb were so kind to send me all of these samples, and I would love to share some with you. Please leave a comment below telling me what you would like to do to Jay your favorite use of protein powder, and I’ll pick three random winners to receive one packet of rice protein powder. The winners will get to choose between vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate.
Remember, you can order your own Jay Robb products online. Just click here, and don’t forget to use the promo code here for 20% off your order! Again, the single serving rice protein packets are currently available, but the 12 and 24 ounce bags will not be available until May.
Tomorrow morning Mr. Sexy (but not as sexy as CD) Hot and I have a date for pancakes. Won’t you join us?

If Jay Robb wasn’t produced on a “allergen-prone” conveyor belt, I’d for sure try the protein powder – oh well. MORE SUN WARRIOR FOR ME!!
ahh, thanks for the review. i don’t know what type of protein powder my brother uses, but when i was making a smoothie for my brother, i added in a scoop of protein powder. my brother took a sip of the smoothie, cringed and said, “it tastes like play-dough.” i’ll look into some jay robb products
.
Hahahaha great post! I love how it was informative and hysterical. I’m glad you came to a conclusion
thanks for the insight
I think my favorite use of protein powder is mixed into a smoothie! So great after a long run!
hehe, i ordered sexy hot-err, the whey protein
can’t wait to give it a try, i’m almost out of my current one!
AH SEXY HOT! I have never tried protein powder – gasp! But would love the chance to give it a go! I would like to try Jay Robb NAKED, possibly with a little bit of water and topped with whipped cream (that’s what she said!) But really, I’ll try it any way!!
great contest, and you two look super cute together. I love how he’s just casually holding his shirt open – so random!
Great review!! I always put protein powder into fruity smoothies. YUM!
My favorite way to enjoy protein powder is mixed into cold refreshing smoothie after a great workout…and having it served to me by Jay Robb himself would make it even more delicious
Thanks for the giveaway Heather!
I would love to try some~! I use whey protein powder now and I am not thrilled with the ingredient list (although my wallet is).
Lately I am addicted to protein pancakes!! I make mine with 1/4 c old fashioned oats, 1/4 c cottage cheese, 3 egg whites, and 1/2 a scoop of protein powder. How much greater would these taste with a little man candy addition lol!
such a great review!! And I love your yoga outfit!
I love to use protein powder in my cereal!! (and of course in blended puddings
).
So sexy. I don’t know what I like better, the orangey fake tan or the moustache.
I like mashing protein powder with banana and PB for a high-energy snack after long runs… not that I’ve done a long run in awhile, but still!
i love your headband! I’d love to hit up some Jay action, although the shellfish thing ALWAYS freaks me out! I’d make a protein-frap-shake, with some of my costa rican coffee yaa!
My fav…just straight up blended with water til nice and bubbly!
I like my protein powder in oatmeal form. Mmm.
His shiny gold bling cracks me up. Of course, I guess if you are going to wear an unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt, it’s only appropriate to sport a bit of bling too.
I do love the man’s vanilla whey protein powder. I’ll admit it. I am a devoted fan.
ive never tried rice protein powder! i’d either put it in my oatmeal and try it that way , or my breakfast cookie!
thanks for the awesome giveaway heather! i’m having one right now too with bobs red mill steel cut oats!
i love to mix protein powder in my oatmeal! i would LOVE to try this new one as i can’t find it near me!
Yay! I was waiting for the review before I restocked my Rice protein supply! I’m really dying to try the chocolate, since I’ve yet to try one that is tasty. I actually use protein powder in A LOT of things……smoothies, my homemade “yogurt”, “fool yourself cookies”, pumpkin pies, and even in my coffee! I will be purchasing the big size as soon as it is available!!!!! Thanks darling
I like to mix protein powder with a little ice and almond milk and blend it together in my magic bullet for a nice yummy smoothie!
I love how he’s standing there all CASUAL with his shirt just hanging out – like, oh hai guyz, did not notice ya there….
Anyway, thanks for doing the comparison, good to know! I’d like to try protein powder in a shake, as a meal replacement.
Smoothie or oatmeal! I’ve only tried NutriBiotic rice protein so I’d love to try this new one.
I’d love to try Jay Robb’s protein powder in smoothies! Especially the rice protein, because I’ve never had it before! Thanks for offering the generous “give away”.
My fav thing to do with protein powder is very simple…just mix with almond milk and frozen blueberries. BUT OF COURSE I am loving the protein pancakes as well!
I’d love to try Jay Robbs..I wonder how it would face-off with my beloved Spirutein?
i must confess i never use protein powder! so i’d experiment with all kinds of stuff- smoothies, pancakes, breakfast cookies.
Haha, LOVE the picture of you and Jay. You guys look so good together!
Hmm, there’s been a lot of protein powders floatin’ around the blogsphere lately.. I think I should jump on the bandwagon!
I would make protein smoothies… or maybe finally get to make the famous Fitnessista Breakfast Cookie!
Oh, the possiblities…
I like protein powder in smoothies and breakfast cookies, where I can’t taste it as much!
I knew he’d win!! I am a plain with milk or water protein kinda girl and Jay’s powders taste the BEST! Plus you get to see that stud every time you have protein- what could be better?
Hi Heather – I’d like to try the rice protein powder in my oatmeal. One thing I’d like to point out about your ingredient list is that “natural flavor” could be a whole slew of things. I’m guessing that the Sun Warrior lists everything and my in fact have fewer ingredients. Just my two cents.
Moprica,
Thanks for your comment. I’ve emailed the Jay Robb folks for more info. on the natural flavor, and I’ll post about it as soon as I hear back from them.
thank you for the review, heather! I know I love sun warrior, so I’d probably love jay robb A WHOLE LOT!!
my fav way to use protein powder is just as a general mix-in! you can put it in egg crepes (justine!), you can put it in oatmeal, you can put it in blendy things (heather!). with all that versatility, who would even want to use it in a regular shake!?
I take a soop of nutribiotic choc rice protein powder or raw power’s superfood choclate flavor and blend it with 1 cup of almond milk and pour it over a cup of kamut puffs, a cup of millet balls and a serving of nature’s path smart bran with a sliced banana on top…a really light meal but very nutrious.
Aw man, I hate that Jay Robb is consistently coming out as the top winner in protein powder compeitions because I can’t get a hold of it here!
I’m trying a new whey powder though so hopefully it will fill his shoes decently.
On a random note, I love your headband. I bought one recently to wear and I’ve been made fun of for it, but now that you have it, I’m one of the cool kids
Lara,
You wear that headband with pride. I bet you look adorable in it. Hope you new whey taste good. Why do you live so far away?
Giveaway.. fantabulous!
Honestly, I’ve never used protein powder, but I am desperate to get some to try in a breakfast cookie a la Fitnesista!
Couldn’t me in.
-E
Even though you don’t like hemp protein powder… i love using it blended with some oat bran, avo, banana, vanilla, and greens… topped with banana ice cream or chocolate chips.
Also, quick question. What do they mean by natural flavors? I have heard that natural flavors is something to be questioned. Did the company offer any info on that.
Can’t wait to check out Jay Robb Line!
Hey Nicolegodiva,
Yeah, not sure about the natural flavors – I’ve emailed the Jay Robb peeps, and I’m waiting to hear back. I’ll post about it as soon as I hear from them.
Hmm, your hemp protein powder recipe makes me want to try my dirt again.
haha. P.S. Love your picture. Cute <3
I’d put it in my oatmeal! mmmmm
thanks for the review! i currently use jay’s vanilla whey protein, but I don’t like overdoing it with dairy products. So I want to try the rice protein! My favorite use is in a shake or mixed into my oatbran.
jay robb is HOT and that (lack of) ingredient list is turning me on even more….i WANT!!!
I would mix it with my green smoothies!
Well, first I’d get him into a dark room. Then, I’d slowly open that sexy, Hawaiian shirt, then I would….oh wait. Wrong question.
I’ve (gasp!) never had protein powder! But if I COULD have protein powder, I would probably put it in the oats OR in pancakes. Love the PCakes, but they don’t normally fill me up. Maybe that sexy goodness would help fill up this tummy? That’s what she said. (ewwww!)
Thanks for the review, Heather.
I really like using protein powder in smoothies after my runs!
Nice review! I just got some Sun Warrior and would love to do my own side-by-side comparison. I’d try some blended with water and also in a green smoothie.
I’m glad you’re reunited with your love. I just wasn’t comfortable with the separation
I think I love protein powder in blended bowls best!
I have actually never tried protein powder…but would love to! Pick me
Thanks for the giveaway and that pic of you and Jay is so cute (well, you mostly!)
I currently haven’t used protein powder for anything but would love to try it in some smoothies or my daily morning oatmeal!
blw_22@yahoo.com
Instead of just having plain coffee in the morning, I throw a mug full of coffee, a couple of raw eggs, and a scoop of either chocolate or vanilla whey powder in the blender and… instant protein latte! Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top and you’re set! Mmmmmm… drool…
Briana,
I love your protein latte recipe…you are a girl after my own heart.
I forgot to add… Pick me!
I love your blog. But I have never found Almond butter where I am at and I am a Naturally More fan. But your almod butter looks sooo good. How does the taste compare? WHat are the differences?
Almost Healthy Chris,
Thanks so much for reading my blog…what, no almond butter!?! If you like almonds, just imagine them in a spreadable form. Where do you live my friend? This may call for drastic measures!
Lately I’ve been putting half a scoop of Jay Robb’s chocolate protein powder in my oats in the morning along with a tablespoon of natural pb. It reminds me of peanut butter cups
I am seriously laughing hysterically here!!
Thank you for the review!!!
I’d love to win a sample!! I am not doing well with whey protein at ALL!!! I have tried a couple of rice protein powders that have been okay – but would love to try this!
My fav uses for them are of course, in smoothies… and in my oatmeal pancakes!
Go Jay Robb! I actually just this morning used the vanilla brown rice variety in an apple-oatmeal-raisin breakfast cookie and it was REAL good. I guess I’m officially in no hurry to try Sun Warrior then!
oooh what i WOULDN’T do with Jay… i mean… I like him with my oats, especially vanilla with strawberries
Well, I’ve never tried protein powders before but I have to say I’m pretty curious. I’d love to try adding it to my smoothies or to my morning oats for a protein (and flavor?) boost
I would love to try some Jay Robb! I have two favorite ways to use protein powder – either as pancakes/crepes (with fried banana slices on top!) or in a banana mango smoothie!
I’ve never tried brown rice protein powder and would love to try it. My main experiments with protein powder so far have been in smoothies and breakfast cookies. But I’m always looking for new ideas!
fav use is the powder blended with soy milk and frozen banana. hello milkshake
I haven’t tried protein powder yet, but I would love to. I imagine that when I get some, I will make a killer breakfast smoothie.. or perhaps some great oatmeal combination (perhaps green oats with some kick!). Cute picture, by the way =)
YOU are the cutest ever! That CD better watch out.. that Jay is an ornery dude with his shirt open like that.
Love you, peach!
Ruh-roh! If you keep posting pics of yourself and Jay, you might end up with a catfight with Sarah LovIN! That would be awesome
Pick me! Pick me, Random Integer finder! I just like to use my protein powder the old fashioned way – mixed w/water or rice milk. I’m a simple girl, what can I say?
jay gets all the love! i really need to try his rice protein. ive been using soy protein too often lately.
You two make a smokin’ couple! The Sun Warrior might give Jay a run for his money if he would take a pic showing off his warrior figure.
Love the side by side comparison to Sun Warrior which I have been hearing TONS about! I would agree with you that the shorter ingredient list and the better taste would make it a winner for me too! Awesome, and entertaining review!
Haha, you and Jay are *almost* as cute a couple as you and CD, but not quite!
My favourite thing to do with protein powder is sneaking it into high-carb dishes like oatmeal and cereal. It both balances it out and makes it tastier!
Thanks for the review. I have been using Rice Protein powder and I really love it. I would love to try out Mr. Heartthrob’s stuff (don’t tell Charlie).
My favorite way to use the protein powder is just to cook it into my oatmeal. This morning I kept it simple – into the Vita-Mix with water, lots of ice, Rice Protein powder and a banana. The sweetness of the banana makes it taste way better.
Hi there – I love Jay Robb protein powders! Besides adding it to my oats, I have loved adding vanilla to my yogurt. It blends so nicely and adds to the overall flavor. Thanks for the Review! staci
Yum! I’d love to try the protein powder in a breakfast cookie…a la Fitnessista.
Love Sun Warrior, I just had some with Blended Barley =)
Jay sounds great too, I’ll have to keep a lookout!!!
Great Review! I would love to try some of Jay’s protein powder in a bowl of cereal!
oh the smack down continues..I think you just picked him for the picture.
I would love to try some vanilla protein powder. I don’t think I want it with water though… it’ll be in me oaties
if i won id rub it all over my hot bod. :]
I’ve never had any protein powders, but would love to try out Mr. Robb!
My favorite use of protein powder is a morning smoothie with vanilla powder, two cups raw spinach, two ounces blueberry “stuff” (TJ’s l6 ounce wild boreal cooked in microwave till it’s jam, then cooled) AND…2T PB2, one pack stevia.. and 1/3 cup water, 8 ice cubes… hello Peanut butter and jelly smoothie…
I love chugging s protein smoothie after a long run!
The abs, they slay me! I would love to join you on your pancake date with Mr. Sexy Hot but I can’t – give Jay my best regards!
I would mix Mr. Robb up with strawberries and cocoa powder/chocolate soy milk
I’d love to whip up some of that chai pudding, but am all out of protein powder. I’d love Jay to join me : )
haha. this Jay Rob thing is too funny!
It was very funny to read your love for Mr. Jay. I actually like him too
and would love to try his protein powders. I really liked his choc. whey one. and I liked making smoothies with it using soy milk or regular milk, ice cubes and frozen bananas. I would also like to add it in my oat bran. Thanks! One of these days I will win something!!
Hahaha… you are so cute together.
Mmmm my fave is protein smoothies, and I must try these protein pancakes!
I love to put protein powder, soymilk, pumpkin, and ice in the blender..yummiest smoothie ever!
I will have to try Jay Robb’s since the only brown rice protein I’ve had is way too chalky and needed a lot of ingredients to mask its flavor. My favorite use is to add them to smoothies or homemade energy bars.
Also, you two make a beautiful couple! Heh.
I am a protein powder virgin, so I’m not sure how I would eat Jay Robb
I’ve tried the Jay Robb whey protein powder, but not the rice protein powder. So, I’m in for the giveaway!
i use it in smoothies!
You 2 make a lovely couple… quite the contrast in looks from cutie CD, but if CD feels lonely, I’ll take him!
I love protein powder + soymilk + mango/pineapple/blueberries!
I’ve never tried protein powder–I have been scared that it would taste awful–but after seeing its prevalence in the blogosphere, I’d love to give it a try. If I were to win the protein powder, I’d make a smoothie with it…and then I’d try mixing it in my oatmeal. Thanks!
you are the best! I am cranky-bc its way past my bed time, and your post just made me laugh at loud! Jay Robb and you would make a great couple! too bad you are already taken seeing as how he is trying to seduce you with his rice protein and all. Also, if I had some Jay Robb in my life, I would drink him in a smoothie! mmmm…mmm.goood!
I think it goes without saying that I am pretty old-school with my protein powder–I use it my nightly smoothies, mixed with frozen fruit and soymilk:)
Oh that sexy man, his sexy abs and his tasty protein! I would love to try some in my smoothies I make. The protein powder I have at home is soooo chalky. Not Good. Jay must be a winner if you can enjoy it with just water!
I usually have my protein in smoothies, mixed with papaya or bananas!
I make protein shakes after the gym, or adding it to my oatmeal for breakfast.
pick me pick me … I never add protein powders to my food before – thats because they are all disgusting … but looks like Jay might change that
I’ve never tried ANY protein powder but I think it may just be the missing ingredient in my breakfast cookies… They always fall apart!
I bet CD is jealous if Jay.
I bet CD is jealous OF Jay. Geez. I wrote 7 words and I still managed to screw it up.
I’ve got a great muffin recipe that uses protein pwder. Not sure how they would do with rice protein. Would love to find out!!
good to know…especially since that’s the only option Kroger offers me =/
Love the post, so funny!
I put protein powder in my oatmeal pancakes. Yummy!
Funny post Heather! Sounds like you had a tough decision to make!
I’ve seen this protein powder made into pancakes, and that’s how I’d love to use it! Oh, and in oatmeal, too!
Yay purebars! I would love to try some, and I am curious to see if I’ll like them better than my beloved standby, the lara bar.
currently in my pancakes, but you make Jay’s product sound soooo good I kinda want to try in in plain water….I am pregnant and craving some Jay Robb..:)
I like it in smoothies or in oatmeal.
Awesomee giveaway! I have not experimented much with protein powders, but I would love to start!
