Pancakes, PURE Bars, and Protein Winners

by HEAB on April 23, 2009

Jay met me for breakfast this morning.  We had chocolate protein pancakes

Fluffy tires make me happy. :)

Fluffy tires make me happy. 🙂

Jay’s rice formula makes an excellent protein pancake, especially when smothered in PB & Co’s Mighty Maple and maple syrup.  Great way to start the day!

Some of you inquired as to the natural flavor listed in Jay Robb’s rice protein ingredients.  Below is Jay’s response:

Our flavoring system is proprietary and is a well-guarded secret. We use natural extracts to create our flavors, and that is as far as I can go in describing our unique flavors or I would be revealing our secrets. Countless companies in the past 15 years have attempted to find out our secrets by sending us letters inquiring about our flavors. Many other companies have analyzed our product in an attempt to duplicate our secret and outrageously delicious formula. But no company to date has come close to the quality or taste of our product. We are the pioneers of creating protein powders tastes fantastic, yet is not laced with aspartame, sucralose, fructose, acesulfame-K, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or any other junk that protein powder formulas often contain.

From time to time we receive emails and letters from our customers who are concerned with MSG, excitotoxins, and our products. Most of the concern about excitotoxin ingestion and the potential damage it can cause is centered on the ingestion of aspartame, MSG (monosodium glutamate) and hydrolyzed vegetable protein; NONE of which are used in any of our protein products. We also offer unflavored protein products for those who wish to sidestep all flavors and/or use their own flavorings.

Now for the winners of the rice protein giveaway:

Winners, please email me with your address and flavor of choice (vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate), and your protein powder is on its way!

I have officially devoured sampled all of The PURE Bars I received last week:

Check out the chunkage factor:

I now refer to The PURE Bar as the Ben & Jerry’s of raw food bars as every bite was filled with either dried fruit or nuts.  Love me some chunks! Below are my thoughts on each individual flavor beginning with my favorites:

  1. Apple Cinnamon – Chocked full of dried apples and 100% delish.
  2. Chocolate Brownie – I love chocolate.  I love dates.  That being said, when I eat a chocolate flavored bar, I want to taste the chocolate, not the date paste. This bar did not disappoint! Plenty of chocolate flavor.
  3. Wild Blueberry – This bar reminded me of these generic blueberry newton cookies I used to eat all the time in college.  Yum, and I loved the walnut pieces.
  4. Cherry Cashew – This was good and not as tart as some other cherry flavored raw bars.  However, I couldn’t really taste the cherryness until the last 2 bites.
  5. Cranberry Orange – The orange flavor was a bit too overpowering for me, but good if you like your bars extra fruity. 🙂
  6. Chocochip Trailmix – This is the one flavor I didn’t really like (K, I’m glad you enjoyed it more than I did).  The raw cacao nibs made the whole bar a little too bitter for my taste.

Overall, The PURE Bars were delicious, and I love that they are higher in protein and lower in fruit sugars when compared to many other raw food bars on the market.  My one complaint is the size. For 200 calories, there is not much to them.  They make a nice snack, but I usually followed them up with a spoonful of nut butter as I was always left wanting a bit more.  Again,  a huge thank-you to Rebecca at THE PURE BAR for sending me samples and be sure to check out founder of The PURE Bar, Veronica’s blog

Want to share in some PURE Bar love?  I thought so.  Leave me a comment below, and you will be entered to win one of 3 PURE Bar coupons.

I’ve always wanted to try purebars, so thanks for the chance!

Gina April 24, 2009 at 12:45 pm

I am a dietitian who used to run, all the time. It’s funny, I actually had similar thoughts of “if I run, I can eat more!”, yet I no longer run. The reason I stopped was because I started getting plantar warts and my shins just never agreed with running. Now I use the elliptical (much easier on my body), and lift small weights, plus do pilates 1-2 times a week. What a difference! I prefer it this way 🙂

Sweetie Pie April 24, 2009 at 10:08 am

I think just about anything tastes awesome with Mighty Maple on top. It’s my favorite of the PB&Co. PBs. So stinking good!!

I don’t like sun warrior. I feel like I’m the only one out there, but I just don’t.

jesstyler April 23, 2009 at 1:19 pm

ooh, the apple cinnamone one sounds delish. I’ve been trying to find some bars that I like – these sound good. I had one raw bar in Ireland while visiting that was SOOO good, but now I can’t remember what it was! 🙁

Stephenie April 23, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Nice, love the PURE bars review… I hate random sampling them from the store, so it’s good to hear some opinions first!

KL April 23, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Spring Has Sprung Giveaway:

Holly April 23, 2009 at 11:07 am

Jay’s offering 20% off? Oh, you meant the ORDER. I need me some sexy in my life.

Thank you for your honest review of the Pure bars! I saw some at our grocery store this week, went to reach in, then hesitated. I’m a cheapass, er, I mean – financially AWARE – and $2 is a lot for me to spend on a snack I don’t know much about. After your review, I think the blueberry sounds like a perfect fit for me. 🙂

Bethany April 23, 2009 at 10:46 am

I would love to try a Pure Bar. Loving all the giveaways!

ohkansascity April 23, 2009 at 10:41 am

ksgoodeats April 23, 2009 at 9:22 am

Oh hey Jay 😉 It looks like Mr. Sexy Hot’s biceps are bigger than his head – maybe we could get a measurement from the company?! I think one of the reasons why I liked the trail mix one was because the nubs were bitter – the bitter the better!

I love your reviews!! Very in depth which I appreciate!

coco April 23, 2009 at 9:19 am

i want to try these bars after seeing them everywhere! 😀

lora April 23, 2009 at 9:14 am

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) April 23, 2009 at 8:55 am

Gah, what is up with Pure bar saying they were sending me a package and it not arriving??? I’m feeling left out.

Good to know that the rice protein makes good pancakes…mine need all the help they can get. 🙂

VeggieGirl April 23, 2009 at 8:55 am

Power-packed protein post!! 😀

Danielle April 23, 2009 at 8:53 am

I need pure bars in my life… and stat! Glad you enjoyed ’em:)

brandi April 23, 2009 at 8:52 am

ooh, the pancakes look great!

I think I need a tight black shirt like Jay Robb. Right? I gotta show off these guns to someone 🙂

carolinebee April 23, 2009 at 8:50 am

Woo tires are back baby! 😀

Erin April 23, 2009 at 8:46 am

Well, of course I want some free Pure Bars. I love those things!
I’m glad you liked the Apple Cinnamon, it’s my favorite too. I figured I’d like the chocolate best, being as I’m such a chocolate lover, but those chunks of apple won me over. I also thought the Trail Mix was kind of bland. I am still lacking in the Blueberry flavor, so I need to find that one to complete my sampling.
Your breakfast looks delicious. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of hopefully non disgusting protein powder. It’s sort of sad how excited I am for it to come. Protein pancakes are one of the niftiest inventions ever and Mighty Maple is such a good pancake topper.
Oh, and I braved the flax pudding again. MUCH BETTER!
