Wild Bar Review & Giveaway

by HEAB on May 4, 2009

My breakfast was 100% Heat the Salmon Butt worthy:

Looks like my usual blended oat bran, no?

Looks like my usual blended oat bran, no?

I don’t even want to get into what I tried for breakfast this morning.  I’ll leave it at this…remember my lovely savory cauliflower mash from Saturday?  Well, today, I tried a sweet version using steamed orange cauliflower and vanilla rice protein powder.  The only redeeming factor in my bowl was the almond butter topping. Sweetened pureed cauliflower?  I know…what was I thinking?!?  Let’s just say it turned out to be a Radley Eats Almond Butter kind of morning…Radley being my dog. :)

Now, onto better tasting things!

My new favorite bar!!!!!

My new favorite bar!!!!!

A few weeks ago, Kathleen, one of my readers, emailed me about Wild Bars, a 100% raw whole foods bar.  After hearing the Mountain Mint flavor tasted like a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie, I was sold and immediately contacted the folks at Ancient Sun Nutrition, producers of the Wild Bar, begging for requesting a sample.  Not only did they send me some samples, but they also offered 3 lucky readers a chance to win 4 bars each.  Thank you Ancient Sun Nutrition!

Oh my gosh you guys, these bars are soooo amazing.  Kathleen was spot on…I have no idea how the producers of Wild Bars did it, but the Mountain Mint flavor totally tastes like a Thin Mint cookie!  The Mayan Spice is equally delicious.  The combo of raw cacao and spices was nothing short of amazing.  I’m also a big fan of the nutritional stats: 185 calories, 9.5 grams of fat, 19 grams of carbs, 14 grams of fiber, and 5.5 grams of protein…plus 53% of your daily B12. Impressive!

Mmm...raw macadamia nut chunks.

Mmm...check out the Mayan Spice's raw macadamia nut chunks.

Seriously, you have got to check out the list of ingredients in these bars – each one is an antioxidant-rich nutritional powerhouse!  So, want to try some for yourself? All you have to do is visit the Wild Bar site and leave a comment below with at least one ingredient contained in either bar.  I’ll leave the comments open until midnight tomorrow night (Tuesday, 5/5) and announce the winners on Wednesday.  Best of luck – I truly wish I could send each of you one of these bars!

Edited to Add: Please leave a comment on this blog post.  Do not email your comment to Ancient Sun Nutrition.  I will pick 3 random winners from the comment section below to receive 4 bars each.

My only complaint about Wild Bars is the price…$4.95 per bar, but I realize the price is so high based on the list of ingredients.  Whole blue-green algae ain’t cheap folks, but it’s one of the only animal-free sources of long chain fatty acids like EPA and DHA, essential for optimum brain functioning.  Honestly, I would eat Wild Bars everyday if I could, but looks like they’re going to have to be an occasional treat…according to my wallet anyway. :)

So, have you tried Wild Bars?  If so, what did you think?

I leave you with…

CD’s Random Comment of the Day:

Your brother is better looking than Jay Robb.

I love those bars!! I prefer the mint over the mayan spice, but they’re both yummy. I feel like they have a flavor that I can’t spot-on describe, but IIII liiike it! They are pricey, but I think unless you eat 5 a day, it can be worth it. I can only find them at one place though! sad :(

Pearl May 4, 2009 at 8:29 am

oh how very cool that the raw bars taste like actual cookies! :)

sorry to hear about the orange cauliflower mash… although that must’ve looked so pretty!

Sandy May 4, 2009 at 8:29 am

Macadamia nuts in the mint. I would love to try these.

Kelsey May 4, 2009 at 8:31 am

Those bars look so interesting. Mayan spice sounds delicious, and the ingredient list is so unique. I really want to try these!!
And your breakfast! Cauliflower addition was good in theory, right?! hahahaa :]

Erica May 4, 2009 at 8:32 am

hahahhahahaha- I love the CD comment of the day. It is my favorite so far. I have not tried these bars but WANT to! I think both Josh and I would like these.

Ashley May 4, 2009 at 8:35 am

I am always amazed by the sheer number of bars out there! I feel like I learn about a new one each day!!

I have not seen these yet, but perhaps we are a little behind the bar times here in Canada.

I love that they are sweetened with dark blue agave!! That is great.

Jessica May 4, 2009 at 8:35 am

Yummmmm, orange rind, vanilla powder & cinnamon…I am excited to try these bars!!

Sarah (from See Sarah Eat) May 4, 2009 at 8:38 am

Betherann May 4, 2009 at 8:41 am

I think it’s so intriguing that the Mayan Spice bar has mesquite in it. Sounds delicious! The price tag is too bad though. I’m not independently wealthy, sadly. :)

marie May 4, 2009 at 8:41 am

I haven’t tried this bar yet but hopped over to the website and noticed that one ingredient in them is macadamia nuts. I LOVE macadamias!

carolinebee May 4, 2009 at 8:42 am

O man, i want the mountain mint one with Maca Root powder :D They sound great, but bad if you get addicted b/c i can NOT spend that much on a bar!

Zoe May 4, 2009 at 8:42 am

Maca root powder, yummmm :)
Love adding that stuff to my smoothies!

Gigi May 4, 2009 at 8:47 am

I’ve never commented, but I LOVE thin mint cookies so I gotta give this one a go. I don’t have any clue what maca root powder is, but it’s in the bars! Have a lovely day :)

runsarah May 4, 2009 at 8:48 am

I haven’t tried those but they sound awesome!

Edith May 4, 2009 at 8:53 am

raspberryrunner May 4, 2009 at 8:56 am

whoa that’s expensive! the mayan spice bar has mesquite and hemp seed…interesting. sounds tasty though!

nieves May 4, 2009 at 8:58 am

ooo… those bars look AMAZING! I’ve never seen them before! I should try them, especially since they contain the food of my ancestors, ha ha.

Kara May 4, 2009 at 9:01 am

Those look delish – I wish they had a list of places to buy! One ingredient mentioned in the mint flavor is dark blue agave nectar – I’m particularly excited to try a bar sweetened with agave because I’ve been trying to work it into my eating to replace refined sugar in various ways!

jenngirl May 4, 2009 at 9:01 am

Those look and sound amazingg!! The ingredient list had me at Macadamia nuts…ANDDD tomorrow is my 21st bday, so winning this contest would rock! ;)

Vani May 4, 2009 at 9:02 am

Oh man, macadamia nuts are my absolute fave, so I’m excited to see them in the bars!!! Awesome giveaway!

Lara (Thinspired) May 4, 2009 at 9:04 am

Ooh, poor Jay Robb :( CD is pretty funny.
I haven’t tried those bars but macadamia is such an usual nut to see in bars. I bet it adds a really nice flavor!

Catie May 4, 2009 at 9:06 am

these look really interested! it says the mayan spice is only sweetened with dark blue agave…thanks for the giveaway:)

hypki May 4, 2009 at 9:11 am

Uh..yeah cauliflower for breakfast, you’re a brave girl!
These bars look quite interesting, I’m willing to give them a try. The Mayan spice says it is made with hemp seeds! ;)
Thanks for checking these out!

jacobc May 4, 2009 at 9:15 am

I seriously go through about 100 bars a month, i’m up for anything new.. I buy a mixed (balance/metrx/pria/eas, etc) lot of mushed/or slightly expired bars from a wholesaler i met off ebay- and he sends me 500 at a time for about .50c each.
They are just to convient to take to the gym– and for before and after running when you want something quick to get in that 30 minute “window”..

Algae?! I’m up for it!
If i use these though i’ll be missing my favorite post-run chemicals of fructooligosaccharides(i kid you not) and Acesulfame!!?? ;-)

Annie May 4, 2009 at 9:20 am

These sound fabulous!

Raw cacao in the Mayan Spice! Yummy!!

Andrea May 4, 2009 at 9:20 am

I love that the mountain mint bars are sweetened with dark blue agave nectar! These look so delicious! :)

Mara @ What's For Dinner? May 4, 2009 at 9:22 am

Yasmin May 4, 2009 at 9:23 am

I have never seen these before but they sound like they would be right up my alley.

Shelby May 4, 2009 at 9:26 am

Anything with vanilla powder and hemp seeds is a winner to me =) I really hope I wiin these, my nutritionist (and mom) have been getting on me about B12, what a great source!

ksgoodeats May 4, 2009 at 9:27 am

Sweetened cauliflower mash sounds very adventurous! Sorry it wasn’t that great!

I’ve never tried (or even heard of) those bars but they sound awesome! Dark blue agave nectar? I haven’t heard of that kind but hey – I’d give it a shot ;)

Sarah May 4, 2009 at 9:28 am

Wow! These bars look wonderful! I haven’t ever heard of the dark blue agave before.

brandi May 4, 2009 at 9:30 am

I am loving the CD’s random comments.

That mint bar sounds right up my alley – plus I need new ones since my husband found my “secret bar stash”.

maca root powder sounds interesting – I’ve never seen that ingredient in anything else!

runnergirl May 4, 2009 at 9:30 am

cacao in the mayan spice bar. yum yum!

Lainie May 4, 2009 at 9:31 am

I haven’t seen these, but they look so good! Ingredient = hemp seeds :)

Alisa - Frugal Foodie May 4, 2009 at 9:33 am

I hadn’t heard of those bars but they sound yummy! Hopefully one of those will help to counteract that breakfast.

Arielle May 4, 2009 at 9:36 am

Awesome giveaway!! I don’t mean to be argumentative, but I thought I should point out that blue-green algae is actually very cheap. It’s the most common form of natural colouring in anything green (food, candy, drinks). It incredibly easy to grow and doesn’t require pesticides, hence being naturally organic by default. They usually farm it in vast quantities, and it grows so quickly that it’s very economical.

Anyway, in the bars there seems to be…cocao, agave nectar, hemp seeds, and mesquite. Yum!

Laura~Texasokie May 4, 2009 at 9:36 am

MMMMMMMM, the Mayan Spice looks yummy. And even though I’ve never heard of some of the ingredients, I’d like to try it.

Michelle C. May 4, 2009 at 9:42 am

wow! thats pricey but they look delicious. The mayan spice has cayenne and vanilla powder in them

amy (veganissexy) May 4, 2009 at 9:43 am

Oh no….salmon butt….no good. Yummy bars…..very good! It’s hard to find a good raw bar that is lower in calories, and not packed with tons of sugar! I’ve never seen those in my local stores, but I’ll have to request they order some. I’m sure they love me down there…..always demanding them to carry new things!

Danielle J May 4, 2009 at 9:47 am

those look delish. got me craving macadamia nuts..

jenn c May 4, 2009 at 9:50 am

these sound so good! the mayan spice has vanilla powder and spices and looks delicious!

moomoo May 4, 2009 at 10:06 am

maca root powder for the win!

Alison May 4, 2009 at 10:12 am

That bar looks great! It’s too bad it’s so expensive. That’s the main problem with so many of these bars.

Andrea@WellnessNotes May 4, 2009 at 10:20 am

Sounds yummy! I love macadamia nuts and would love to try the Mountain Mint bars… :)

Holly May 4, 2009 at 10:23 am

Cayenne in the Mayan? (saying in my head so that it rhymes) ;-)

I DO love me some Mac Nuts, too.

Bethany May 4, 2009 at 10:30 am

Organic cacao. They look delicious!

Maria May 4, 2009 at 10:30 am

Peppermint essential oil + raw cacao = SUPER YUMMY :)

nicolegodiva May 4, 2009 at 10:31 am

mmm. Macadamia nuts!! What an exciting bar! My only question would be if there are analogues in the algae that block the absorption of the B12. I had that problem when I was a rawfoodist. I was eating tons of algae and still developed a B12 deficiency.. .we are talking salads made of solely sea weed and spirulina smoothies daily. Hopefully it is ok though!! I am always so wary… I still want to try it!! = )

greenbean May 4, 2009 at 10:31 am

orange rind! wow, i hope i win b/c that price is kinda steep for my little pockets :-) and CD is right, your brother is way cuter!

Laura R May 4, 2009 at 10:38 am

janetha May 4, 2009 at 4:03 pm

um anything healthy that tastes like a thin mint is OK in my book! yummo! they do look a bit expensive from the website, i wonder if you can buy them in stores anywhere? i checked out the mountain mint ingredient list and saw it is flavored with peppermint oil, must be what gives it that thin mint flavor ;) i love that they are 100% raw

Heather Eats Almond Butter May 4, 2009 at 5:55 pm

Janetha,
Apparently, some Whole Foods carry them, but none in my area (Nashville). Some West Coasters have been able to find them in their stores. You can always email the company to find out if they’re available in your area. Hope you find some soon…or win some. :)

katrina May 4, 2009 at 4:04 pm

Heather Eats Almond Butter May 4, 2009 at 5:53 pm

Heather (Be Well & Take Care),
I’ll put it this way. Radley still has pureed cauliflower on her face. In other words, yes, she was quite pleased with my
breakfast. :)

Amandamoo May 4, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Ugh! These look devine! Can they only be purchased online? I haven’t seen them anywhere! I love the ingredient lists! Macadamia nuts, cinnamon, maca root, hemp, and on and on and on!

Heather Eats Almond Butter May 4, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Amandamoo,
Apparently some Whole Foods carry the bars, but I can’t find them in Nashville either. :( Several West Coasters have mentioned seeing them in their stores. You could always email the company to find out if they’re sold in your area.

lisaheartspizza May 4, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I mean I can see what you were thinking with the sweet cauliflower-who would think that algae chocolate mint bars would taste very good either? We were talking about Vitamin K today and how most people don’t eat a high Vit K diet, and the whole time I thought of you and your spinach oats and bowls of broccoli-I’m assuming you may get some collards and kale in too! Anyways, those bars look great, sorry about your breakfast and keep on enjoying your Vitamin K!

Heather Eats Almond Butter May 4, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Lisa,
I’m honor you thought of me during class. Glad to hear my green foods are on your mind. :) I know…I can’t believe how good the Wild Bars are based on the ingredients! Have a good night.

Bev May 4, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Thin mints in a bar ….Heaven

Cecilia May 4, 2009 at 4:57 pm

I think dark blue agave is so cool – what is that :D Anyways, these bars sounds scrumptious to the max, I soooo hope that I will win this!!

Heather Eats Almond Butter May 4, 2009 at 5:51 pm

Cecilia,
Here is some info. on agave nectar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_syrup. :)

Emily May 4, 2009 at 5:11 pm

Can’t believe you put cauliflower in your oats?! Well, actually…. :-)

I’m curious about the PEA (phenylethylamine) content of the bars and if they really do improve mood. For almost $5 a pop, they’d better!

Love CD’s random comments. Keep em coming!

Ellen May 4, 2009 at 5:23 pm

i’d love to try them both, but the mayan spice with cinnamon and vanilla sounds especially tasty!

Stephanie May 4, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Mountain Mint has maca root powder,

eatingbirdfood May 5, 2009 at 7:57 pm

I haven’t tried these bars, but the Mountain Mint sounds awesome. I’m always up for something that tastes like Thin Mints. One ingredient is raw cacao, which I actually have had on it’s own (not as sweet as one would expect, that’s fo sho). My boyfriends mom makes a smoothie with raw cacao and maca every day.

Jenn (eating bender) May 5, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Those bars look sensational, Heather! Thanks for the chance to win :)

I laughed out loud at your Heat the Salmon Butt recipe. I think it had potential, really I do. Perhaps if the cauliflower was mixed with something a little sweeter? Haha, I don’t know – I just want it to become Heather Eats Almond Butter worthy!!

Laura May 5, 2009 at 9:29 pm

These bars sound incredible! I see cacao on the list of ingredients. :)

Laura E May 5, 2009 at 9:32 pm
