Breakfast Love Triangle

by HEAB on May 6, 2009

This morning, I went on double date:

Jay & Mr. Quaker...always fighting for my affection. :)

Jay & Mr. Quaker...always fighting for my affection. :)

Please excuse my I just rolled out of bed look. Chris and I arrived in Phoenix last night, and I raided Alice’s (my mother-in-law) pantry this morning. So many options…love my in-laws taste in healthy eats!  Anyway, I decided on a bowl of oatmeal with some Jay Robb rice protein powder that I had brought from home. Sorry, but I have no actual pictures of my breakfast for your viewing pleasure.  In an attempt to try my hand at microwave oats, I caused a minor oatmeal explosion.  CD and I don’t have a microwave at home, and I always cook my oats on the stove-top. Apparently, I’m not very microwave savvy. Then I tried to stir in my rice protein powder instead of blending…let’s just say I was really missing my Vita-Mix! Breakfast tasted yummy, but my bowl was a mess.  My topping of choice was organic peanut butter from Costco.  Perfect!

I’m taking the day off from yoga, but I might take a walk later.  It’s so beautiful here – sunny and in the 70′s right now.  I love Arizona!  (Jenn, you totally should live here someday!)  There is a yoga studio within walking distance of my in-laws, and so I might take a few classes there while we’re here.  Other than that, there will just be lots of long walks and maybe some yoga on my own.  I tried to shove my mat in my suitcase, but it wouldn’t fit. :(

Speaking of yoga, one reader (Hey Casey!) wanted to know of any good yoga books out there that include illustrations of poses.  Please leave any recommendations in the comments below.

Wow, you guys all really wanted to try some Wild Bars. Again, I wish I could send each of you a sample!  I received over 200 comments and emails and from those chose the following 3 random winners:

I think you look adorable! I don’t look like that when I wake up! Yummy bfast! I hate when oats explode in microwave! arghhhh! Enjoy AZ.

Mandy A May 6, 2009 at 9:38 am

Seriously – how cute are you right out of bed??? Gorgeous, girl!

I am quite the opposite… I just recently starting making my oats on the stove… I’ve always used the microwave! haha!

Have a great trip! See you soon! Yay! :)

heather thank you so much for your bikram advice! i haven’t stopped thinking about your posts that talk about how you need to listen to your body. i love bikram but im thinking maybe to not do it for a while. I need to learn to listen to my body better and obviously it wasn’t liking the extreme heat. maybe in the winter? it seemed to agree with me then. I am going to start taking community yoga classes by my house, and trying out different types and seeing what i enjoy the most. thank you so much, yo uhave been such a help you have no idea! xoxo

carolinebee May 6, 2009 at 9:44 am

So awesome your back on the West (better??!) Coast! ;D I remember you posting a while ago on how your IL’s read your bloggie and stock up on delish healthy food, so cute! I don’t like micro oats either, i just stare at them till they start to overflow- ah radio waves!

Lara (Thinspired) May 6, 2009 at 9:58 am

Hey Heather–I’m the opposite to you with oats…I have never made them on the stove! I know that’s kind of weird and I don’t really know why I haven’t tried it yet. It’s definitely got to be better for you than the microwave, but the microwave is so darn convenient! However, I’ve definitely had an explosion (or three!), so I guess that makes the stove that much more appealing!
Glad you’re having a nice time “out west,”–oh how I miss it!

Sarah May 6, 2009 at 10:02 am

I am doing the happy dance because VG won. Is that weird?

I have had many an oatmeal microwave explosion myself. I’m glad it was in someone else’s microwave instead of your own, it’s almost impossible to get that sticky, starchy film off completely!

Enjoy your day in AZ!!!

lilveggiepatch May 6, 2009 at 10:06 am

I love your hair!

More than five years ago I got a book called “Yoga for Women” that has photographs of many poses for people of all ages. I don’t use the book anymore because I like going to classes or using Yogadownload.com, but it was what first got me “into” yoga!

Mara @ What's For Dinner? May 6, 2009 at 10:10 am

UGH i hate when my oats explode!!! They almost always do, and i haven’t learned to use a bigger bowl yet! I’m going to look for those bars though, they sounded so good!

brandi May 6, 2009 at 10:36 am

i still love the pink :)

I’m so glad you guys made it there safely! Have a great visit!

Yoga books:

B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health (over 1,000 photographs or something like that, with modifications)

For illustrations of pranayama (breathing) and basic postures:

The Heart of Yoga by T.K.V. Desikachar

Hope that helps!

ksgoodeats May 6, 2009 at 10:54 am

Look at you juggling those two hunks! You make me proud ;) Oat explosions are the worst kitchen clean ups ever!

My parents always joke around that they’re going to retire to Arizona. I keep telling them they should go!! Then I can go visit!

Run Sarah May 6, 2009 at 11:06 am

Loving your hair as always! I often have microwave disasters…eggs are the worst!!

jacobc May 6, 2009 at 11:09 am

Have fun in AZ, and bring back some sunshine!!

polly May 6, 2009 at 11:14 am

oh my SWEET H!! I miss you, honey! Got your message, been a crazy couple days. I promise to call you this week. ;) XOXO

Microwave explosion! Yes, that is the biggest mess! The worst is black bean soup… that might make me cry. Super hard to clean!

YAY for yoga and all those SWEET peeps you are encouraging on a daily basis, sweetie!! You are just a delight, you know that? Really, we are so BLESSED to have Heather and her blog to come to and read and get “filled up” so to speak. Love you from the bottom of my oatbran bowl. :)

You of course, are stunning and beautiful from the moment you awake. True beauty is found in the heart and your shines all over your face. Go-juss Heather!

Love you, and enjoy the time with CD and the gang!

I mentioned your electolyte mishap today. :) I am lovin’ the chips with SALT, baby! Woohoo for a little salty goodness.

XOXO

i forgot!

Baron Baptiste books are amazing for pose descriptions and pictures. Baron, you can’t miss him, he is always wearing his little bandana. ;)

Michelle @ Find Your Balance May 6, 2009 at 11:36 am

So, this isn’t a How-To yoga book with poses but I just wanted to say that my favorite book about yoga is Yoga and the Quest for the True Self by Stephen Cope. A must read for anyone serious into their practice!

weight and meditate May 6, 2009 at 11:53 am

I own a microwave but still can’t make oats in it without them exploding everywhere, don’t worry. Your hair is adorable! Love the streak.

Shelby May 6, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Hope your having a blast in AZ!!!

the dainty pig May 6, 2009 at 2:02 pm

Have a wonderful time in Arizona! Sounds like it will be a fantastic week :)

My favourite book for poses is David Swenson’s “Ashtanga Yoga: the practice manual.” It is all nice and coiled, so it is easy to flip pages while you’re practicing, and it has optional shorter sequences at the back (15, 30 and 45 mins). If you like Ashtanga, this is a wonderful read!

Even though you had an explosion in the microwave, at least you can still have your oats!!

xoxo

Coconutgal May 6, 2009 at 2:26 pm

I wish I looked that cute just rolling out of bed! I love the pink in your hair btw, so cute :)
Us Vitamix owners are totally spoiled. I miss mine so much anytime I’m away from home. I never relaize how much I use it till I’m gone!
Enjoy your visit with the in-laws, I went to Arizona last year to meet some specialists at Mayo Clinic, I LOVED the warm weather and 500 Whole Foods locations.
I’ve had far too many explosion experiences with the microwave, they are so hard to clean too!
How come you don’t have one at home?!

Emily May 6, 2009 at 2:35 pm

i don’t get along well with microwaves either. i usually just use them to defrost stuff.
anatomy of hatha yoga, by h. david coulter, is super informative. it’s really comprehensive; looks at the anatomy and physiology of the practice, if you are interested in that!

runeatrepeat May 6, 2009 at 2:51 pm

You look better than me when I wake up :)

Samantha May 6, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Just out of bed is a good look for you!

I so miss Whole Foods and having access to Jay Robb. I never got to try his rice protein but his whey was my favorite.

I have a yoga book that has 20minute sequences built into it but I rarely use it now that I use yogadownload.com. The book is here:
http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Pilates-Everyone-Bel-Gibbs/dp/0681186496/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241643536&sr=8-

Enjoy your visit!

Kristie May 6, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Just rolled out of bed look? No way lady, you look lovely! :)

Great breakfast combo (even if it exploded). I love raiding other people’s cupboards. They always seem to have much more exciting things than mine! That’s probably because I just raid my own way too often though, seeing the same foods multiple times of day kind of makes them lose their excitement factor a bit hehe.

Have an awesome time in Arizona!

psychoj1 May 6, 2009 at 3:22 pm

You are so cute! Love the hair, btw. Haha, love the fighting combo. YUM!

Thanks for link. I love the picture.. very cute!!

Ashley May 6, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Stove top oat are much better than in the microwave! Glad breakfast tasted nice (even if it wasn’t so visually pleasing). Have a great day Heather :-)

Emily May 6, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Yay oats! Sorry there was an oatsplosion this morning. You really gotta keep your eye on those tricky oats. Glad your in-laws are into healthy eating, too. That always makes things a little easier when traveling.

Hope you enjoy the gorgeous weather! It just started raining here, but I figure it’s good thesis-writing weather.

I can’t believe I won something?! Yay! I’ll email you my address. :-)

amy (veganissexy) May 6, 2009 at 5:33 pm

You look dang good for first thing in the morning! Just LOVIN that pink hair btw…..you rock it for sure :) You’re lucky the parents keep good food in their cupboards. I always have to bring all my own food to my parents sausage/white bread filled household. Ugh. I hate microwave explosions! We have one of those plastic covers that goes over the food and it helps a ton! No more spaghetti sauce nighmares :(

Casey May 6, 2009 at 5:58 pm

Thanks so much everyone (especially Heather, of course)! I’m off to Barnes and Noble right now with your recommendations in hand.

Pearl May 6, 2009 at 6:59 pm

i’m sorry if this sounds creepy, but you have the prettiest blue eyes!

Alison May 6, 2009 at 7:05 pm

I’m so jealous that you’re in AZ. That’s my home! Are you in Tucson or Phoenix?

eatlivelovedream May 6, 2009 at 8:44 pm

I love your hair!!! I really do:) Your just too cute Heather!

yogiclarebear May 6, 2009 at 11:17 pm

hey heather! hehe @ your oatmeal explosion! if i microwave, i use a 1 qt mixing bowl so it doesn’t overflow. (http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_products/catalog/product.jsp?productId=211&categoryCode=KW)

i also like my oaties in my mini single serving crock pot!

i know you make your own nut butters a lot…did you ever have any issues with barney butter and tummy troubles??

Erin May 6, 2009 at 11:52 pm

I think that’s cool that you don’t know much about the micro. You’re old school!
You look pretty amazing first thing in the morning! CD is a lucky man :)

gina (fitnessista) May 7, 2009 at 6:52 am

i totally love the pink in your hair- so cute!!!
hahah who’s hotter: goatee man or quaker man? tough choice.. ;)
congrats to the wild bar winners! i think i’m going to order some- they look awesome
i’m SO JEALOUS you’re in az right now! enjoy the beautiful weather!!!
have a great day!

Light on Yoga by BKS Iyengar. It is THE book. Iyengar is the real deal.

Hangry Pants May 7, 2009 at 9:06 am

I am not hitting on you, but you look so pretty just out of bed!

Dori May 7, 2009 at 7:21 pm

I have a microwave and still cause explosions!
