Rained Out…Almost

by HEAB on June 2, 2009

First off, don’t forget to enter my chia seed giveaway.  You have until midnight tonight (Tuesday, June 2).

Justine, my favorite fellow Nashville blogger, is leaving me for 2 weeks to go on vacation. :(  We decided to picnic in the park before she leaves with one of our blog readers, Kim.  It was beautiful and sunny right up until noon, but then the deluge hit.  Thankfully, there was a covered pavilion where we sat down to some Hugh Jass salads prepared by Justine:

Justine, you know me so well!

Justine, you know me so well!

Y’all, I am a total control freak when it comes to my food.  It’s one of the reasons I rarely eat out, and also one of the reasons why I don’t like dining in other people’s homes.  I want my food prepared my way, but I had no problem accepting Justine’s offer to make us lunch.  Justine, my salad was perfect. Thank you so much!

Not only was Justine sweet enough to make our salads, but she also stopped by Cafe Rakka, our favorite Mediterranean spot, for some hummus lovin.  We cannot have lunch together without hummus.  Seriously, it’s the law.

I ate 3/4 of the container. Couldn't help myself. :)

After our delicious lunch, the sun finally came out, and Justine’s Little One and I practiced our model poses on the playground. What do y’all think? Vogue material?

The soaking wet kiddies:

I wish I was as entertained by rain and mud.

Look how cute! I wish I was that entertained by rain and mud.

Girls, I had so much fun today.  Justine, when you get back in town, we must get together again for another play date.  I don’t have any kids, but I can bring CD. Close enough, right?  Just kidding CD – love you. :)

So, what about you?  Rain lovah?  Hater?  There is nothing like a good rainy afternoon for taking a nap, but otherwise, I need sunshine in my life!

aw, how fun and her kids are so cute!

I love rain when we need it, but sun makes me happier ;) rain makes me lazy!

The Novice Berker June 2, 2009 at 2:27 pm

Awww, you look so cute posing with Justine’s daughter. Eek, I’d better enter the giveaway now before I forget!! Thanks for the reminder. ;)

Amanda June 2, 2009 at 2:28 pm

You are super gorg. in that pic!

I love rain when I have nowhere to go, but honestly … when does that ever happen? Usually it rains when I’m just about to leave work and the whole bottom half of my pants get soaked and then weigh 100 lbs- pet peeve!!

Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) June 2, 2009 at 2:33 pm

What a fun day! I too am a TOTAL control freak when it comes to my meals. I much prefer to make my own. I just like what I like, ya know? Justine’s lunch looks very yummy though. It would definitely be approved by moi =)

What cute kids! Glad you guys had fun despite the rain!

Andrea June 2, 2009 at 2:37 pm

Too cute :)
I’m a rain tolerator at best. I have to be to be an Oregonian!

Kim June 2, 2009 at 2:42 pm

hey heather.. wanted to say it was so great to meet you.. you are so nice.. just like i always thought you seemed on your blog!

but on a serious note.. ugg my shirt! totally wet.. of course you guys look great.. oh well.. when your 3 yr. old needs to picked up what’re you gonna do?

Heather Eats Almond Butter June 4, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Kim,
Yes, so good to meet you as well. I’m looking forward to getting together again. Just wanted to tell you that I steamed some kabocha squash from the batch I just bought, and it was not good at all. It was so hard and not sweet. Blech. I should have known by the pale color as the ones I’ve gotten in the past are a much darker green. So, sorry if your’s tastes bad. I’ll bring you another one next time we meet up, and I’ll make sure it’s ripe! Hope had a good week!
Love,
Heather

Erin June 2, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Mmmm beautiful salads and you know I LOVE hummus!
Looks like such a fun day. I have a weird relationship with rain. Sometimes I really love rainy days…probably more than most people. But I need sunshine too.

homegirlcaneat June 2, 2009 at 3:02 pm

How cute is she! July issue of Vogue..I can just see it!

Nothin’ is betta than friends and hummus. Nuf said.

polly June 2, 2009 at 3:04 pm

That sweet Justine!! What a cupcake for making such a yummy Heabs lunch. Her little one is a doll! What a fun day, H!!!

Sunshine!!!!! Rain is like broccoli… a little is okaaaay cause I know it’s good for me. But SUNSHINE is like almond butter, the more the better!! :P

Love you, sweetness!! Happy Tuesday! XOXO

jenngirl June 2, 2009 at 3:24 pm

I LOVE getting caught in a good summer rain!! Best way to cool off :)

Shelby June 2, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Fun! The salad does look amazing and oh man, that hummus! Delish!

I’m a hater! Rain is depressing and makes my hair frizz. The end.

janetha June 2, 2009 at 3:43 pm

oh your friend’s little girl is SO cute! and i love the rain, but only when it is “convenient” and i can get out of it if i want to. but last night i had a bbq and there was a huge thunder storm and we all stayed outside and stood under the overhang on my patio and watched the rain. that was nice. anyway, that hummus is bangin! xoxo

Gina June 2, 2009 at 4:03 pm

It rained here today and it just made it SO hot and muggy, bleh.

Looks like a fabulous time with blog friends!!

justine June 2, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Heather, I so fun much fun today!! I know Kyra did to. If were just her and I there is no way I would have let her get so messy in that rain and all those puddles!! Man that hummus and pita was bangin but I am really paying for it now! :( UGH!!! I will miss you while I am away. Text me any time!!

Love Ya,
Justine

ksgoodeats June 2, 2009 at 4:27 pm

I share your feelings on going out to eat. I like what I eat and it’s because I make it that way! That salad and hummus is pure love!

You guys look fabulous! Fierce model pose!! As much as I like the sun, I still love a rainy day now and then!

CurlyTop June 2, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Heather,

I think I have seasonal defective disorder…when the sun stops smiling so do I! ;P Very smart of me to move away from the Golden state to the Ocean state where the constant cloud cover is considered part of the local scenery…

Those kiddos are so darlin I could just scoop um up and hug them through the screen.

Have a good day,

Emily

Ashley June 2, 2009 at 5:06 pm

Darn it

I wrote a proper reply then I think I pressed back and now its allll gone :-(

Firstly I wanted to say that it looks like you guys had a lovely picnic today. Justine’s salad look fantastic – she is a very skilled lady :-) And I must say, while your model pose is quite good, I think Justine’s little one really has that special ability to work the camera ;-)

I’m the same with ‘controllling’ my food – but I wont often admit that. I worry it might be a bad thing that I’m not more relaxed about it. But on the other hand, I completely distrust restaurants etc. They add so much crap to their food to make it taste better. I don’t want any part of that!

I love rain when I’m indoors studying – but that’s it. Otherwise, I need lightness and brightness in my life!

Sarah (from See Sarah Eat) June 2, 2009 at 5:18 pm

I’m usually a big sunshine fan but every now and then a rainy day is good for staying in on the couch with a movie or a good book ;-) Rain can be overdone though, haha.

bibixs June 2, 2009 at 5:21 pm

awww!!! those little guys are super cute! and i’ve never heard of Hugh Jass salads before! where did u get the recipe?
well, i like the rain whenever i don’t have plans to take a run outside!
have a nice day :)

Kristie June 2, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Justine sure knows how to make a good healthy salad! Looks pretty darn scrumptious to me.

Totally Vogue material. You guys are completely adorable.

I love the rain. Rainy days make me happy! But only in small spurts. I love them squashed in between lots of sun but if there is a chain of rain then I get bummed about it pretty quickly. Weather balance in best!

Anna June 2, 2009 at 5:51 pm

Cute kids! Looks like a fun meet-up. I totally would have tanked that entire thing of hummus… I loves me some hummus.
As for the rain, I like it on occasion. Too much gray weather gets me down!

mariposagirl June 2, 2009 at 5:54 pm

OH I love a good rain… I love the smell of rain in the air. And when it’s really pouring..I love to play outside.. and freak my hubs out cuz he’s sure lightening is on it’s way.

but a good rainy day is just perfect for a day indoors too and reading and movies and cleaning.

SO CAL life is great AND some days I just love a good RAIN

Heather (be well & take care) June 2, 2009 at 6:05 pm

I like the rain if I can curl up in bed with a book and/or movie, but hate it when I want to go outside to work out. I live in Florida, though, where we have 2 types of weather: sunny/humid & disgusting, or rainy & disgusting.

Melissa S. June 2, 2009 at 6:36 pm

i’m a rain lover if i’m drenched…if i’m just kinda wet…it totally sucks!

Erica June 2, 2009 at 7:14 pm

What a fun picnic day! You guys are so cute. That hummus AND the salad look amazing- way to go Justine!

april June 2, 2009 at 7:18 pm

I love the rain! Its so peaceful. Except when there is lightning involved I definitely don’t enjoy it.. it scares me! lol

Maggie June 2, 2009 at 7:22 pm

I kind of miss rain. It doesn’t rain here much after April. I used to love snuggling up with a book and a mug of hot cocoa when it rained when I was little. And I love the thunderstorms of Florida. So refreshing.

I love it when someone else makes food that I LOVE. Yay for good friends :)

FoodsThatFit June 2, 2009 at 7:24 pm

You and Justine’s little one are too cute together! I love that you all included the little ones on your get together, I bet they loved it.

How kind of Justine to make you all such a lovely and thoughtful lunch. Makes me want to move to TN just to hang out with all of you!!!

psychoj1 June 2, 2009 at 7:50 pm

I love the rain! I couldn’t stand it everyday, but I enjoy it when it does rain! Great picnic! That hummus looks delicious!

Adi (oatonomy.com) June 2, 2009 at 8:05 pm

As long as I’m not heading out the door to walk to work, I’m all for rain! A grey day is usually a good day.

Kiersten June 2, 2009 at 8:06 pm

I am a control freak when it comes to my food too. I’d much rather eat at home than go out, which is why we don’t go out to eat often.

The salad Justine made looks so tasty! I have been on a huge salad kick lately since the weather warmed up.

Andrea@WellnessNotes June 2, 2009 at 8:09 pm

The salad and the hummus look absolutely delicious! I love hummus, but my gallstones don’t, so I can’t really eat it. :(

It looks like you all had a good time on the playground – rain, mud and all! :)

Annabel June 2, 2009 at 8:25 pm

hey, saw your guest post on Zesty Cook! loved it! can’t wait to try the recipe! :)

Gena (Choosing Raw) June 2, 2009 at 8:42 pm

That salad is just beautiful! xo

Sarah June 2, 2009 at 9:09 pm

At least my salads were there…even if I wasn’t. Can you imagine the playdate fun?!

I am the same way when it comes to people making my food. It truly is terrible.

Emily June 2, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Looks like a fun and delicious lunch. Salads are the best in this hot weather, and hummus is good anytime!

You and Justine’s daughter are so adorable. :-)

I’m with you on the sunshine…I need it!

Elina June 2, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Definitely vogue material :)
The rain always bums me out… sunshine for me, please :D

carolinebee June 2, 2009 at 10:14 pm

I’m totally a rain lova when I’m all cozy and snuggled up with hot chocolate! But then I want to wake up to sunshine and sand and beachness! That sounds like such a fun date, I love that you can trust a blogger to bring you a perfect healthy and delish meal…that entire take out container of hummus looks soooo good, ah mushrooms!!

yogiclarebear June 2, 2009 at 11:37 pm

rain makes the days when i have tons of work to do inside a lot easier to bear. but the sun is sure nice when i have a day off!

rain also helps my SQUASH and TOMAOTES and LETTUCE grow!! but of course, so does the sun.

gosh i’m thinkin’ God worked it out well. :)

Jessica (jesslikesithot) June 3, 2009 at 1:37 am

Yum! A Hugh Jass salad and some hummus is all this girl needs!!….and maybe some peanut butter too. :)

Lara (Thinspired) June 3, 2009 at 3:03 am

Definitely Vogue material, ladies! What a fun day. Justine and her little one are so cute.
I used to think I liked the rain…I don’t know what I was thinking. I think it’s becuase it rarely rained where I grew up so I thought it was really cool when it did. Now that I have moved to one of the rainiest countries ever, I really miss my California sunshine!

MizFit June 3, 2009 at 4:17 am

such sweet pics and, with enough notice, I GUESS :) Id let you borrow the Tornado for a day too!

happy chia’ing.

Im kinda in to the jelly these days (making it I mean :) not the goo)

sweetkaroline June 3, 2009 at 7:25 am

adorable kids! that hummus looks yummy! I know what you mean about hesitating to eat out or at other people’s. It’s just easier to make food for yourself the way you want it and with ingredients you trust

prettyladycmu June 3, 2009 at 7:25 am

Hi Heather, I just found your blog and I LOVE it! Adorable pictures of you with The Little One and it looks like you had a blast.

Playing in the rain can be fun, and I don’t mind running in it since it cools me off so nicely, but I think I’d still take a warm sunny day over rain almost any day!

Sorry I missed out on your chia giveaway, but I’ll definitely be checking back often :)

Have a great day!

HM June 3, 2009 at 8:51 am

Pic of you and the little girl is so cute :)

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) June 3, 2009 at 10:19 am

Nothing like a good romp in the park! Too bad Justine is going away, especially when it looks like she is your ideal personal chef. :) Mr Hugh Jass needs to pay me a visit soon too! The Farmer’s Market here is out of control this time of year.

Metta June 3, 2009 at 10:24 am

That salad looks fresh and delicious, what a nice friend!

Love the pictures. :)

Alisa - Frugal Foodie June 3, 2009 at 10:27 am

What fun pics! And definitely Vogue material.

elise June 3, 2009 at 4:34 pm

i have mixed feelings about the rain…mostly because i loveit, but hate waht it does to my hair :) i used to adore playing soccer in the rain (oh so long ago). anyways, im SO similar with dining/eating out/others preparing my food. its hard to relinquish control…as for the no lunch without hummus law, im SO on board!
