Amazing? Not So Much. You Can Have It.

2009 July 6
by Heather Eats Almond Butter

Happy Monday my friends.  Hope everyone is having a good day back at work after the holiday weekend.  I started off this week with an early morning Vinyasa yoga class, and during class, I noticed a spinach leaf floating in my water bottle and the big green Organic sticker from my bananas stuck to the bottom of my yoga mat. Typical Heather Monday morning. :)

Last week, I received a generous box of samples from the folks over at Amazing Grass

Amazing, no?

Pretty amazing, no?

OK, first off, I will say that I contacted the company to try these products knowing full well that I hate wheat grass…and hemp protein powder, two ingredients found in the company’s products.  However, I had heard nothing but good things about the Amazing Grass powders and bars, and I was so happy when my samples arrived.  I immediately made a green smoothie in a bowl:

Thank you ABU!

Thank you ABU!

My bowl contained 1 scoop Jay Robb vanilla rice protein powder, 1/2 frozen banana, Amazing Grass Chocolate Green SuperFood, spinach, water, ice, xanthan gum, guar gum and ABU on top.  This was um, somewhat edible.  It tasted pretty green, but the Jay Robb and ABU helped make it all betta. :)

Then, there was this disaster:

I wasted 2 TBSP on chia in this one. :(

What a waste of chia. :(

For this bowl, I mixed 2 TBSP chia seeds soaked in 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk with 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 1/2 frozen avocado, Chocolate Infusion Amazing Meal, stevia and ice.   After one bite and then another just to make sure it tasted as bad as the first, the entire contents of my bowl went straight down the sink.  In my opinion, you can add all the chocolate you want, but hemp protein powder will always taste like dirt.

Next up was the Chocolate Whole Foods Energy Bar:

Chocolate Covered Green Chunks

Chocolate Covered Green Chunks

2 bites, and into the trash.  Blech.

After one of my readers (Hi Carolyn!) told me about her favorite smoothie containing the Berry flavored Green SuperFood, I decided to give the Amazing Grass products one last try in today’s lunch:

Folks, we have a winner.

Folks, we have a winner...finally.

This smoothie was actually pretty tasty.  Into the Vita-Mix went:

The Jay Robb and banana ice-cream definitely help masked the green taste…no almond butter even necessary!

Now, you guys know I love my greens…I mean, I blend broccoli into my oat bran almost every day, but I did not like the taste of the Amazing Grass products. For the most part they tasted way too earthy for me. There was major sweetening action required for every smoothie, and that bar literally tasted like I rolled a ball of grass in some chocolate and took a bite. No thanks.  Plus, I don’t like that many of the products, including the Amazing Meal, are sweetened with cane sugar.

So, no more Amazing Grass for me!  Thankfully, I get so many greens in my diet that I really don’t think I need a green foods supplement anyway.

However, would you like to try some Amazing Grass?  Let me know in the comments below, and I’ll pick one random winner to receive the remainder of my stash.  Just make sure your frozen banana supply is stocked! ;)

Sorry to hear that you had to waste those chia seeds – its always a bummer when an experiment goes wrong. I have actually heard about amazing grass and curious about it for a while now – i was looking for it for sale in my local health food stores but didnt see it. MMMM that chocolate whole foods energy bar looks amazing though! Have a great monday : )

ohohoh pick me pick me!! I would love to try these…even if they do taste like dirt haha. I will probably give the ones that are sweetened to my mom but these are so expensive and I would love to give it a go.

By the way you will totally be seeing your zuchini pasta on my blog very soon! It makes me drool everytime I see it. :)

I had been eyeing some of the “goods” but couldn’t justify buying a big old thang’, without trying first. I was standing in line at Sunflower Market, this morning, and happened to notice individual packets they were selling. I purchased one of the chocolate ones. I shall try, but I am hesitant. I like eating the greens better.

Well this is one of my first food blog comments I have ever left (even though I have been an avid reader for some time) but I finally decided to start my own blog (http://positiontransition.blogspot.com/) so I think more regular commenting should be in the works!..oh and by the way, you are on my blogroll ;) . Anyways, I am with you on the Amazing Grass front…but for a different reason. Being a newbie to the Celiac club (gluten free), I assumed that when the packaging AND website said that their products were gluten free, I just assumed they would be safe. Boy was I wrong! I got SO sick!! Hello, WHEAT GRASS…that just screams gluten right there! I gave away my container of amazing grass right then and there to my foodie loving friend! NO MORE! Sometimes I feel like it is so easy to get swept up in the hype of seemingly “healthy” and natural products that we forget we can get all of the same benefits out of nature’s bounty! Keep blending that broc in your morning oat bran…its the unprocessed version of amazing grass in my book!

  15. 2009 July 6

Ohh I would love the amazing grass products – please pick me!

How do you get free samples, do you just e-mail them?

Aw man, not so great that you didn’t like the Amazing Grass but i’m super pumped that you are willing to give some of it away.

You see, over here in the UK we cannot buy these products. I’ve already contacted AG (amazing grass) themselves to see if they ship here. No luck :(

The good thing for you, is if you choose me – you don’t have to ship all the way across the pond either! I am going to be in Canada in less than three weeks so I am more than willing to have the products shipped to my parents house there.

Plus it’s my birthday in three weeks..
and i’m getting married in just over a month.

We could say that this would be a birthday present & wedding present and call it a day :)

I like that you give honest reviews. I bought one of the bars at Whole Foods and the first bite was VERY strange, but I actually grew to enjoy it. I’d be interested in trying this stuff!

  111. 2009 July 6

Thank you SO MUCH for your honest review!! I’ve only tried one sample, and it was just meh. However, I know there are a billion (or five) other AG products out there. I’d be interested to try the bars…

I would love to try the Amazing Meal products as they are a bit too pricey for me to buy! Too bad you had to waste the chia seeds.
Similar thing happened to me this morning after I made a Green Monster…I found a little spinach in my coffee. Yup, I drank it anyway :)

I’ve wanted to try their powders because I like putting green things in foods where they seemingly don’t belong – Amazing Grass seems like such an “easy” option for when the blender isn’t at my side. I can’t find it locally, and I’ve been too nervous to drop the cash on an order, so my fingers are crossed for this giveaway! :)

I don’t really want the stuff-just wanted to leave you a comment anyway:)

First of all, LOVED, LOVED, LOVED my hot yoga class!!!!!!

Second, I have been using the chocolate chili flavor of hemp protein powder and I really like it:) I was scared at first to buy it but they were out of the kind I had been using. It does have a little ‘grit’ to it and I have NOT been brave enough to try the regular flavor. I can handle the chocolate though:) Too bad you didn’t like all that stuff—free anything is usually a good thing! Have a great night!

  130. 2009 July 6

I’d love these! They’re perfect for nights when I’m too tired/busy to cook but am craving greens. Thanks for the giveaway!

I really really wanted to try their product. I tried to use Jenna’s code and another but it keeps telling me shipping to Guam is $184 and THREE emails to their customer service has gotten zero response. So they WON’T get my money based on that alone. I’m with you, lots of greens in other ways like green oats and green monsters.

Thanks so much for sending me that heinous CB workout…I’ve now done it twice and LOVE it…unfortunately I’m seriously sick at the moment and have to put all workouts on hold.

  176. 2009 July 7

Bummer those chias got wasted :(

I have super strange taste buds, and for some reason totally love the taste of hemp protein powder. To each his own!

  177. 2009 July 7

I really want to try it because everyone raves about it, though am pretty certain I’ll share your sentiments :P

  178. 2009 July 7

I don’t want to try them, but thanks for the offer. Isn’t that kind of like when someone tastes sour milk and winces and than passes it for someone else to taste?

I get contacted often about products and most often I say no thank you. If I wouldn’t eat it- I am not going to give it to others to eat. I once had a teacher in nutrition school who commented on the phenomenon of people living up for free samples- when those people are on the street giving it away. He pointed out that dog poo on the sidewalk is also free… just because it’s there doesn’t mean we should take it. Now… I am in no way comparing grass mixes to poo, I just mean that it is always so tempting to want free stuff ’cause it’s free.

And I write this as I look over at a total of 12 products that were sent to me from Garden of Life and I am trying to decide what to do with them. I suppose a giveaway will be coming soon.

  179. 2009 July 7

omg! i can’t believe you didn’t like amazing grass! i def think the taste of wheat grass must be acquired but it’s actually pretty good in orange juice (or other fruit juice) based smoothies. i used the various meal products in a smoothie with oj and frozen blueberries, rasps, cherries and strawberries with spinach and it was good! i did not like the chocolate poweder though so a def no go on that one. although it may be good if you add a ton of chocolate syrup to the mix..

btw…don’t forget about our immaculate baking coupon giveaway!

  180. 2009 July 7

oh no! bummer! i must say i have tried two flavors i think now and really only liked the chocolate. i go through so much spinach (and don’t have a car so can’t get it at costco all the time), so I decided to see if it’d work as a sub… different. definately earthy! haven’t tried the bars, but now i’m scurred :)

  181. 2009 July 7

I’m sorry you didn’t like the Amazing Grass stuff. I really love Amazing Meal! It would be fun to get some free stuff to help supplement the monthly(ish) “bill” for my Amazing Grass stash. :)
