Amazing? Not So Much. You Can Have It.

by HEAB on July 6, 2009

Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!

Happy Monday my friends.  Hope everyone is having a good day back at work after the holiday weekend.  I started off this week with an early morning Vinyasa yoga class, and during class, I noticed a spinach leaf floating in my water bottle and the big green Organic sticker from my bananas stuck to the bottom of my yoga mat. Typical Heather Monday morning. :)

Last week, I received a generous box of samples from the folks over at Amazing Grass

Amazing, no?

Pretty amazing, no?

OK, first off, I will say that I contacted the company to try these products knowing full well that I hate wheat grass…and hemp protein powder, two ingredients found in the company’s products.  However, I had heard nothing but good things about the Amazing Grass powders and bars, and I was so happy when my samples arrived.  I immediately made a green smoothie in a bowl:

Thank you ABU!

Thank you ABU!

My bowl contained 1 scoop Jay Robb vanilla rice protein powder, 1/2 frozen banana, Amazing Grass Chocolate Green SuperFood, spinach, water, ice, xanthan gum, guar gum and ABU on top.  This was um, somewhat edible.  It tasted pretty green, but the Jay Robb and ABU helped make it all betta. :)

Then, there was this disaster:

I wasted 2 TBSP on chia in this one. :(

What a waste of chia. :(

For this bowl, I mixed 2 TBSP chia seeds soaked in 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk with 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 1/2 frozen avocado, Chocolate Infusion Amazing Meal, stevia and ice.   After one bite and then another just to make sure it tasted as bad as the first, the entire contents of my bowl went straight down the sink.  In my opinion, you can add all the chocolate you want, but hemp protein powder will always taste like dirt.

Next up was the Chocolate Whole Foods Energy Bar:

Chocolate Covered Green Chunks

Chocolate Covered Green Chunks

2 bites, and into the trash.  Blech.

After one of my readers (Hi Carolyn!) told me about her favorite smoothie containing the Berry flavored Green SuperFood, I decided to give the Amazing Grass products one last try in today’s lunch:

Folks, we have a winner.

Folks, we have a winner...finally.

This smoothie was actually pretty tasty.  Into the Vita-Mix went:

The Jay Robb and banana ice-cream definitely help masked the green taste…no almond butter even necessary!

Now, you guys know I love my greens…I mean, I blend broccoli into my oat bran almost every day, but I did not like the taste of the Amazing Grass products. For the most part they tasted way too earthy for me. There was major sweetening action required for every smoothie, and that bar literally tasted like I rolled a ball of grass in some chocolate and took a bite. No thanks.  Plus, I don’t like that many of the products, including the Amazing Meal, are sweetened with cane sugar.

So, no more Amazing Grass for me!  Thankfully, I get so many greens in my diet that I really don’t think I need a green foods supplement anyway.

However, would you like to try some Amazing Grass?  Let me know in the comments below, and I’ll pick one random winner to receive the remainder of my stash.  Just make sure your frozen banana supply is stocked! ;)

Sorry to hear that you had to waste those chia seeds – its always a bummer when an experiment goes wrong. I have actually heard about amazing grass and curious about it for a while now – i was looking for it for sale in my local health food stores but didnt see it. MMMM that chocolate whole foods energy bar looks amazing though! Have a great monday : )

jacobc July 6, 2009 at 1:12 pm

If you don’t like it, i know i won’t like it!

I don’t think i would have even tried that bar..doesn’t look to good..

Just put me a double entry into the next contest ;-p

organicashley July 6, 2009 at 1:19 pm

ohohoh pick me pick me!! I would love to try these…even if they do taste like dirt haha. I will probably give the ones that are sweetened to my mom but these are so expensive and I would love to give it a go.

By the way you will totally be seeing your zuchini pasta on my blog very soon! It makes me drool everytime I see it. :)

Patty July 6, 2009 at 1:28 pm

I would love to try it!!!!! I am very curious and open to trying new things! This would be an amazing opportunity.

Ashley July 6, 2009 at 1:30 pm

I would LOVE LOVE to try these. I’m strange and actually like wheatgrass haha.

JB July 6, 2009 at 1:31 pm

haha, the spinach leaf in the water made me laugh. i’ve had some good and bad experiences with amazing grass. i used to buy it a while ago, but don’t anymore. i know what you mean about the taste. it’s definitely not one of my favorites. sorry about that waste of chia, girl! how sad. :(

CJ July 6, 2009 at 1:36 pm

I would love to try it – it’s sooo expensive and I’ve read SO much about it in blogland!

Thanks!

D July 6, 2009 at 1:38 pm

I had been eyeing some of the “goods” but couldn’t justify buying a big old thang’, without trying first. I was standing in line at Sunflower Market, this morning, and happened to notice individual packets they were selling. I purchased one of the chocolate ones. I shall try, but I am hesitant. I like eating the greens better.

greenbean July 6, 2009 at 1:43 pm

sorry it was so blech! i’m done to try some stuff especially b/c its so expensive and i just don’t see myself paying for it. thanks heab for your candid review!

Laura July 6, 2009 at 1:46 pm

I would love to try them!! :) It is strange they would sweeten it with cane sugar of all things.. why not stevia or something?? Love your blog by the way! :)

Jenna July 6, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Amazing Grass has intrigued me ever since I saw it on Eat Live Run, I would love to try it!

Beth @ CrossBorderCravings July 6, 2009 at 1:48 pm

I would like to try!! After seeing these all over the blog world I too am curious :O).

Simone July 6, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Well this is one of my first food blog comments I have ever left (even though I have been an avid reader for some time) but I finally decided to start my own blog (http://positiontransition.blogspot.com/) so I think more regular commenting should be in the works!..oh and by the way, you are on my blogroll ;) . Anyways, I am with you on the Amazing Grass front…but for a different reason. Being a newbie to the Celiac club (gluten free), I assumed that when the packaging AND website said that their products were gluten free, I just assumed they would be safe. Boy was I wrong! I got SO sick!! Hello, WHEAT GRASS…that just screams gluten right there! I gave away my container of amazing grass right then and there to my foodie loving friend! NO MORE! Sometimes I feel like it is so easy to get swept up in the hype of seemingly “healthy” and natural products that we forget we can get all of the same benefits out of nature’s bounty! Keep blending that broc in your morning oat bran…its the unprocessed version of amazing grass in my book!

Jess July 6, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Ohh I would love the amazing grass products – please pick me!

How do you get free samples, do you just e-mail them?

VeggieGirl July 6, 2009 at 1:51 pm

YES YES YES!!! THANK YOU!!! Glad to know that I truly am not the only person who hates the Amazing Grass Products.

sasinsugar July 6, 2009 at 1:52 pm

LEMME TAKE THEM! YUM YUM YUM.

jenna July 6, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Oh my gosh!!! I have to say I am SHOCKED! Ryan and I both loooove those bars so much…I pretty much eat one a day! Oh well, to each their own I guess! I’m sorry you didn’t like it! :(

Clare July 6, 2009 at 1:55 pm

I’d LOVE to try them! I’ve read so much about them in blog-land recently and would be happy to take them off your hands :)
Thanks!

Audrey July 6, 2009 at 1:57 pm

I’d love to try it for myself!

Laura E July 6, 2009 at 1:57 pm

I’m so sorry you didn’t enjoy them! I hate it when that happens. I only like the chocolate packets so far but I do like the bars.

Whit July 6, 2009 at 1:58 pm

I may hate them, I may not. I would like to take yours off your hands and see. Thank you. :)

Kelli July 6, 2009 at 1:58 pm

I’d love to try them. Sometimes it is nice to have something pre-made for you on busy mornings. I agree though, I really TRIED to like hemp protien powder. I just can’t do it.

Amy July 6, 2009 at 1:59 pm

I’d happily try them!! Sorry you didn’t like them though!

Danielle July 6, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I’ll gladly take them off your hands. I’m a wheatgrass-head from way back.

Laura S July 6, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I would love to try it in my smoothies!!

janetha July 6, 2009 at 2:02 pm

it is really interesting to read your review and i am glad that there is finally some different opinion on the stuff. i have my sample pack coming to me and i can’t wait to taste for myself. thanks for the review!

Leah July 6, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Aw man, not so great that you didn’t like the Amazing Grass but i’m super pumped that you are willing to give some of it away.

You see, over here in the UK we cannot buy these products. I’ve already contacted AG (amazing grass) themselves to see if they ship here. No luck :(

The good thing for you, is if you choose me – you don’t have to ship all the way across the pond either! I am going to be in Canada in less than three weeks so I am more than willing to have the products shipped to my parents house there.

Plus it’s my birthday in three weeks..
and i’m getting married in just over a month.

We could say that this would be a birthday present & wedding present and call it a day :)

Christina July 6, 2009 at 2:03 pm

I’d love the rest of your stash… bring on the grass! lol

Emily July 6, 2009 at 2:04 pm

I’ve really been wanting to try this stuff, and would love to take it off your hands :) It sucks that you didn’t like it, seems like every review i’ve read has been positive. Thanks for your honest review!

Nicole July 6, 2009 at 2:05 pm

I’m sorry you didn’t like your Amazing Grass experience. I’ve been reading a bit about them lately and am curious. I would love to try a sample of what you didn’t use. :)

Danielle C. July 6, 2009 at 2:06 pm

I’ve been super curious to try the Chocolate SuperFood but I’m skeptical because they are so expensive. I’ll gladly take some off your hands to give it a try.

amyvig July 6, 2009 at 2:07 pm

I’ve been trying to win these everywhere. Pick me!

Shelly July 6, 2009 at 2:07 pm

I had a very bad experience with some original amazing grass mixed with water and them some cranberry juice to try to save it. BAD. IDEA. But I am interested in seeing how I can blend them up and make them palatable b/c I do feel awesome when I’m getting lots of greens in my tummy!

Nicole July 6, 2009 at 2:08 pm

I actually really love the taste of hemp protein and other “earthy” flavors. :-) I’d love to sample the Amazing Grass products!

Mary July 6, 2009 at 2:08 pm

What a bummer that it isn’t what you’d hoped for. Even though your review has made me a little wary of Amazing Meal, I’ve still always been dying to try it!

Marissa July 6, 2009 at 2:09 pm

I’ll try almost anything vegetable or fruit…

I choke down hemp protein powder (though I have to add fruit to my concoctions). I also use a green supplement. BUT I realized recently that they recommend you start off with a tsp of it and move up to 2 T.

Um…I tried 2 T and OHMYGODBLECH.

Still…I drank it.

Gloria July 6, 2009 at 2:11 pm

This is my first comment, but I love your blog! (I had an entire acorn squash as dessert for lunch today – yummm) I’ve been using the Amazing Grass products for a few months now and actually love them! My mom did catch me eating grass when I was really little, though… so that might explain it ;) I’d love to replenish my supply!

~Gloria

Ryan July 6, 2009 at 2:11 pm

What a bummer.

I love free samples, though!

peaceandpeanutbutter July 6, 2009 at 2:13 pm

Awww sorry it didn’t work out! I’d love to sample the rest ;-)

Colleen July 6, 2009 at 2:14 pm

Pick me! Pick me! Curiously I like the fact that cauliflower tastes like dirt smells, so maybe I’ll enjoy this stuff!

Laura July 6, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I would love to try it after hearing so much about the line! One (wo)man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure! lol

Lara (Thinspired) July 6, 2009 at 2:16 pm

Oh I would love to try the Amazing Grass! Not that I don’t trust your judgement ;) But I would probably mix it with some frozen fruit and I have a feeling it would be better then :) I am dying to try it but it’s just do darn pricey. I was going to use Jenna’s 40% discount and get some shipped to my parents’ in CA, but I missed the deadline :(

How’s that for convincing? ;)

plentifulplants July 6, 2009 at 2:17 pm

It’s too bad you didn’t enjoy them, but I’ve been enjoying the fruits of my wheatgrass juicing adventure, and I LOVE my hemp nut butter, so I’d love to give the Amazing stuff a try!

Michele July 6, 2009 at 2:17 pm

I would love to try any of the Amazing Grass samples that you didn’t like.

Sorry that they didn’t work out for you. But you can’t say that you didn’t give it a shot.

Nelly July 6, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Heather-sorry you didn’t like your Amazing Grass. I’ve actually tried the Chocolate Green Superfood and I really liked it. I haven’t tried their other products but would love to! I hope I win this.

Heather July 6, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Hey Heather! I love this sort of stuff…bring it on.

Red Head, Yellow Dog July 6, 2009 at 2:21 pm

I’d love the amazing grass products! I currently am using TJ’s “Very Green” powdered greens and would LOVE to compare them to the amazing grass products.

Kristen July 6, 2009 at 2:21 pm

I have been meaning to buy some but haven’t gotten around to it, but this is the perfect opportunity. Great giveaway, you are such an inspiration!

leslie July 6, 2009 at 2:24 pm

you know, it’s actually sort of refreshing to hear someone differing from the norm . :) sorry you had to waste so much food though! i’d still love to try the products and form my own opinion; i haven’t wanted to spend my own money on them yet. thanks for being so generous!

Emily July 6, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Aw, sorry you didn’t enjoy the Amazing-ness (and ended wasting precious chia!). I’m actually a huge fan of wheat grass and hemp :)

dailygoods July 6, 2009 at 2:25 pm

sorry to hear you didn’t like the grass! i love it :) heath, i had a question for you! i bought some chia seedsss!!! what do you think is the best way to use them? i know youre a huge fan so i knew exactly who to ask!!

Lindsey (Mrs. LC) July 6, 2009 at 2:26 pm

My frozen banana supply is ready to go! I think I have about 1.5 lbs still in my freezer? LOVE frozen naners. :)

And I love you, your blog, and how wonderfully honest, open, and positive you are! Nothing like a good ol’ down to earth blog to put a smile on one’s face. :)

Jerilynne July 6, 2009 at 2:27 pm

Sorry you didn’t like them! But that’s awesome you are giving the rest away – those little suckers are expensive!! I don’t always get all the greens I need in a day so sometimes the little packets of Superfood help me out a little =). I would love to try the Amazing Meal and the bars too!!

Rae July 6, 2009 at 2:27 pm

Bummer that you don’t like them!
I’m a big fan though :)

kaneil July 6, 2009 at 2:27 pm

oo oo mee! I want to give it a shot. Come on, Heaber, don’t you feel bad that I can’t have Calypso whenever I want? :(

haha jk hope your Monday is still wacky and fun!
Kaneil, balanceisbest

justine July 6, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Blah!! I ll pass!

~Justine

Gina July 6, 2009 at 2:31 pm

That bar looks really gross. I actually don’t think I’ve ever tried wheatgrass (you need not enter me in the giveaway though).

brandi July 6, 2009 at 2:32 pm

your taste buds must be too mature for that powdered stuff :)

i would like to try some of it, though. I can’t get it here and they apparently don’t want to send me samples :)

i always have fruit + hershey’s syrup handy if needed!

i hope you’re having a good day, friend. I love that there was a spinach leaf in your bottle :)

Gina July 6, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Sorry to hear you didn’t like the Amazing Grass, but at least you were open minded and tried them!
It’s really cool you’re giving the rest away and I would love to try them since I’m a college student and money is definitely tight.

Either way, have a great day!

Carolyn July 6, 2009 at 2:40 pm

hahahaha… Well, you gave it an AMAZING whirl! You know my story of eating it too! I would love to be the recepient of your leftovers… Between Paul (the grass eating machine) and i they would all be loved and eaten up…

Loved that yoga post…. gotta go there too soon!

AB mixing, raw food eating, spiral slicing, food massaging…. yoga doing…so much fun to learn!

Kaitlyn July 6, 2009 at 2:40 pm

I had a similar problem with Greek yogurt. Everyone in blog world LOVES it, but I just doesn’t sit well with me! I have seen Amazing Grass on almost every food blog around here and have been dying to try it. I have tried the bars and they are my favorite things ever.

Emily (Healthy Fit Mama) July 6, 2009 at 2:41 pm

I love the Amazing Grass Bars. But the powder, I definitely have to blend with lots of banana and nut butter to mask the grassy taste.

hopefulrunner July 6, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Hey Heather! Sorry to hear that you didn’t like the Amazing Grass. I have wanted to try these products for a long time but there aren’t any stores in my area that sell them….so, if you want to send em my way I would be more than happy to try them out and do a review on my blog! :)

Have a beautiful day!
Dayna (HopefulRunner)

Ellen July 6, 2009 at 2:44 pm

AH i love amazing grass! i eat it as much as possible, but i’m a poor college student so i have to ration the stuff. the berry superfood is my favorite :)

holly July 6, 2009 at 2:47 pm

I would love to try some! :) The bar does look a little iffy to me though…like lawn clippings coated in chocolate :O

Lauren July 6, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Sorry you did not like them however, I would LOVE to try them!!

AnAppleADay July 6, 2009 at 2:51 pm

i’d love to have your sample stash! because i am definitely addicted to amazing grass products

JW July 6, 2009 at 2:55 pm

I would love to try these!!

Sweetie Pie July 6, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I’m sorry you didn’t like them. I’ve been curious to try those products, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

However… I would try them in a box. I would try them with a fox. I do like green things (and yams). I do like them, Sam I am.

psychoj1 July 6, 2009 at 3:01 pm

I would LOVE to win these samples. I’m shocked that you didn’t enjoy them, but now I want to try them all the more to see what I think. Haha :)

Thanks so much!
<3 jess
xoxo

melissa July 6, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Awww…I’m sorry you had to throw away so much yummy stuff (obv, not including the A.G. stuff:). I luv it and would be so psyched to win…Melissa from Clearwater.

Caleb July 6, 2009 at 3:04 pm

What did you think of the chocolate flavored Amazing Grass? I have had that in the past and LOVE it. I have been curious to try some of their other products though, SO I would love to be the winner :)

Alexandra July 6, 2009 at 3:06 pm

I’ve tried the Chocolate Meal and find that if I mix half of a scoop of that with half of a scoop of whey, a banana and a ton of spinach that it doesn’t taste too crazy! I would like to give the other products a shot, though, especially because they are so dang expensive!

elizabeth July 6, 2009 at 3:10 pm

i’d like to give it a shot!

Sarah July 6, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Hey, I’ll try anything once! I have been wanting to try the Amazing Grass products.

Emily Davidson July 6, 2009 at 3:12 pm

I, too, would like to try these samples. I’ve had some and I know the taste can be a bit offensive, but I see that as a challenge! You can never have enough greens, and these supplements are nice “insurance” when you don’t have access to your favorite leafy greens.

Michelle July 6, 2009 at 3:15 pm

I still haven’t tried Amazing Grass yet and I’m dying to, even though you didn’t like it. I’m not sure if I will either, but I still really want to try it!

Chris July 6, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Wow sorry to hear about the failed experiments. I have seen these on tons of other blog and have wondered how they taste. I would love some. Send some my way if you can.

Mary July 6, 2009 at 3:18 pm

WOW…I have been dying to try the Chocolate Superfood. Even though it wasn’t your cup of tea:), I would still love to try it…send it on over!

Steph July 6, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Well, of course I would love to try it! :)

Jenn Eats Nutritiously Now July 6, 2009 at 3:38 pm

I’d love to try some! I’ve entered tons of these contests and never win, but am too scared to actually pay money to try them.

Lisa July 6, 2009 at 3:39 pm

I’ve seen Amazing Grass on so many blogs and I’d love to try it!

aisha July 6, 2009 at 3:39 pm

I’d love to try them, I’m an absolute nutter and love hemp cos it tastes like dirt, it reminds me of beetroot juice that I adore. Not so sure how you would feel about posting to the UK though…
It really sucks to hear you didn’t enjoy them, I do agree on the hatred of wheat grass, it is foul.

Liz July 6, 2009 at 3:46 pm

taste like dirt? But i have heard such good things about amazing grass. I’ll still give it a try. Thanks!

Maria July 6, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Sorry that you didn’t like it, Heather. I adore Amazing Grass and love the extra boost of energy it gives me. But I think you do tend to get a lot more greens than I do via regular meals throughout the day ;)

RunToFinish July 6, 2009 at 3:50 pm

it definitely has too be mixed with something to mask the taste for me as well, but i did love the bars. I finally figured out that mixing in something with a vanilla flavor made a big difference.

redhead75 July 6, 2009 at 3:51 pm

I love the amazing grass products! I drink the organic wheat grass with water only :) I would love the rest of your stash!

Hallie July 6, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I would really like to try some of these products! I bought a packet of the chocolate flavored powder to see what I thought. If it really gives me boundless energy…I might sell my dog to afford buying it on a regular basis ;-) But I def want to sample before I purchase!

Susan July 6, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I got a freezer stocked full of bananas and ready for some amazing grass!! :D

nicole h July 6, 2009 at 3:55 pm

i want to try those bars and amazing meals! those sound very yummy.i get the wheat grass shots at jamb juice sometimes.

michelle pope July 6, 2009 at 3:56 pm

I would love to try some of those products! I love wheatgrass!

Chez July 6, 2009 at 3:56 pm

I’d love to try it! I could use some different greens in my smoothies besides spinach!!

Graze With Me July 6, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Bummer about the “earthiness”! I’ve had the chocolate powder and I liked it – I could definitely TASTE it but I’d be more than willing to take those off your hands. :)

The bars are chunky, yes, but I think maybe you got a bad one? I had one a few weeks ago that was more ground up than yours looks….

That said, pick me! I need more green in my life….

glidingcalm July 6, 2009 at 4:03 pm

ewwwwww. im not entering! that stinks that you didn’t care for it all that well! so many bloggies are obsessed!!! and i’ve never had a wheat grass shot! nerrrrrrrrrvous

Leah July 6, 2009 at 4:07 pm

I’d love to try some!

Courtney July 6, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Oh – I love the Chocolate AmazingGrass bars – I would love to try some more of their products!

runeatrepeat July 6, 2009 at 4:10 pm

I liked the few things I’ve tried from them :)

Equinox Girl July 6, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Heather,

I’d like to give it a whirl. I think my taste buds are up for some earth food!

Thanks.

Katelyn July 6, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Oh my goodness, I have been wanting to try these products for a long time. But I wonder if I will like them? Thank you for giving away the rest of the loot!

Courtney Craig July 6, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Hey Heather,

Been reading your blog for about a month or so, now. Loving it a bunch & you’ve turned me on to Almond Butter. Loving it as well! I have read Jenna’s blog (ELR) and admire her love for the Amazing Grass products. I would like to try them, myself, but can’t justify the expense w/ my hubby out of work at the moment. Select me for a sample; I’d love to try it out!

Take care,
Courtney

Megan July 6, 2009 at 4:36 pm

mmmm, i LOVE amazing grass! it boggles my mind that some people can just mix it with water and drink it(gag!), but i barely notice it in my smoothies!

i feel you for sure on the hemp protein front. i have a hemp protein i use as my backup, and although it tastes alright, the texture is so dirt-like, i feel like an animal drinking it! ick!

Nicole July 6, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Hey! I would loveee to try some of that Amazing Grass! I havent been brave enough to make a green monster yet..and I think using one of their powders would make an awesome first try (: Thanks!!!

Kelsey July 6, 2009 at 4:42 pm

i thought that of all people, you would love the amazing grass! hahaha :]
the blended foods always look so pretty [does that sound weird? lol] and the colors are awesome!

Mandy July 6, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Ooh, i love me some green! As green as can be and as much as can manage! Spinach smoothies with spirulina are for green goddesses everywhere. Would love to see if amazing grass can rival he green goddess menu…..

Kristen July 6, 2009 at 4:50 pm

I do like Amazing Meal products!! =]]]

Kristen July 6, 2009 at 4:50 pm

erm, make that Grass* hehe

Jaki July 6, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I would love love love to try the Amazing Grass products. I just starting follow your blog today… looks amazing!

Jill H. July 6, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I would LOVE to try the samples. I am DYING to try a green monster since I have heard so many people talking about it!

Heather (be well & take care) July 6, 2009 at 5:03 pm

I like that you give honest reviews. I bought one of the bars at Whole Foods and the first bite was VERY strange, but I actually grew to enjoy it. I’d be interested in trying this stuff!

Holly July 6, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Thank you SO MUCH for your honest review!! I’ve only tried one sample, and it was just meh. However, I know there are a billion (or five) other AG products out there. I’d be interested to try the bars…

traveleatlove July 6, 2009 at 5:09 pm

Sorry you didn’t like it! I actually really like the flavors, crazy huh? :)

Lori Z July 6, 2009 at 5:14 pm

Hhhmmm, I’ve really been wanting to try this stuff but now I’m not so sure. ;) I figure if I mix enough peanut butter in with it it has to taste good though…

Shelby July 6, 2009 at 5:32 pm

Yikes…I’m getting some in the mail soon. I contacted them too. =0

Becky July 6, 2009 at 5:35 pm

I would love to try the Amazing Meal products as they are a bit too pricey for me to buy! Too bad you had to waste the chia seeds.
Similar thing happened to me this morning after I made a Green Monster…I found a little spinach in my coffee. Yup, I drank it anyway :)

Elizabeth Edith July 6, 2009 at 5:37 pm

leftovers please?

jess July 6, 2009 at 5:41 pm

i’ll take it off your hands!

Lily July 6, 2009 at 5:43 pm

I’m curious and broke :)

Stephanie July 6, 2009 at 5:45 pm

I would love to try the Amazing Grass products. I have heard SO much about them, but they’re just too expensive for me right now. I love the idea of a quick way to get in greens on the go :)

Emily July 6, 2009 at 5:54 pm

Sorry you didn’t like it, I want to try it though!

Katie w July 6, 2009 at 6:02 pm

I would love to win all these goodies!! I have been meaning to try their products but they are a little expensive for me!

Christina July 6, 2009 at 6:07 pm

I would LOVE to try these, Heather!! I don’t get nearly enough veggies so this would be a good supplement :)

((pick me, pick me, pick me!!))

lora July 6, 2009 at 6:08 pm

im up for the challenge to eat these :)

xoxo

kristin f. July 6, 2009 at 6:19 pm

I’ve wanted to try their powders because I like putting green things in foods where they seemingly don’t belong – Amazing Grass seems like such an “easy” option for when the blender isn’t at my side. I can’t find it locally, and I’ve been too nervous to drop the cash on an order, so my fingers are crossed for this giveaway! :)

Brooke July 6, 2009 at 6:23 pm

would love to try them!

MargaretW July 6, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Oh Wow, I would love to try those! I am sorry things didn’t work out for ya!

Kristen July 6, 2009 at 6:26 pm

pick me pick me!! after hearing both the good and bad reviews, I want to test some out for myself! Thanks for the giveaway Heather :)

Kaysie July 6, 2009 at 6:38 pm

I am a master camouflager of green foods… I’d love to try these products and let you know if such a feat is possible :)

livingfreeforever July 6, 2009 at 6:49 pm

I don’t really want the stuff-just wanted to leave you a comment anyway:)

First of all, LOVED, LOVED, LOVED my hot yoga class!!!!!!

Second, I have been using the chocolate chili flavor of hemp protein powder and I really like it:) I was scared at first to buy it but they were out of the kind I had been using. It does have a little ‘grit’ to it and I have NOT been brave enough to try the regular flavor. I can handle the chocolate though:) Too bad you didn’t like all that stuff—free anything is usually a good thing! Have a great night!

fitforfree July 6, 2009 at 6:50 pm

I’d love these! They’re perfect for nights when I’m too tired/busy to cook but am craving greens. Thanks for the giveaway!

Kristi (sweetcheeks) July 6, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Bring on the greens!!!

kailey July 6, 2009 at 6:55 pm

thank you for your honesty!!
i still haven’t tried out amazing grass. Maybe I wont…don’t want to waste any oats/GM.

Sarah July 6, 2009 at 7:12 pm

id be down to try it!
i bought some of trader joes hemp protein and im really into it. i havent had the chance yet to try any others or wheatgrass

Melissa July 6, 2009 at 7:13 pm

I know you don’t like them…so I probably won’t either but I’m not going to lie…I would like to give them a chance!!!

megs July 6, 2009 at 7:17 pm

Hey, I would love to try them

jesstyler July 6, 2009 at 7:23 pm

I’ve tried them a few times with mixed results. I’d love to try them again though. I hate to buy a whole container if I don’t like them. I’m not a fan of wheat grass – YUCK. But I’ve had their chocolate Amazing grass mixed with a banana and it wasn’t too bad.

Joelle (The Pancake Girl) July 6, 2009 at 7:23 pm

Oh my gosh, THANK YOU! I thought I was the only person in the world that found those Green whole food energy bars to be nasty. No offense to their company or anyone who enjoys them, but I personally just could not finish a whole one, despite wanting to like it.
ps. Just to let you know, I recently renamed my blog due to confusion with another blog of the same name, but everything else is still the same- including my growing love for a bowl of oatbran.

Chaley July 6, 2009 at 7:25 pm

I’m sorry you didn’t like them, but I would love to try them!

Rachel July 6, 2009 at 7:28 pm

I’d love to try it!!

Gena (Choosing Raw) July 6, 2009 at 7:30 pm

Ohhh, I think you know where I stand on this one. So I’m not entering the giveaway, but I am commiserating :)

suzannern July 6, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Yes, please! And, thank you for the giveaway!

Amy July 6, 2009 at 7:32 pm

This is funny! It makes me think of when someone says “Ew, this stinks. Smell it.” If it stinks, I don’t want to smell it…BUT I would like to try Amazing Grass products. Like they say, one (wo)man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure.

PS-I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!!

Alison July 6, 2009 at 7:39 pm

I’d love to try some Amazing Grass. I’m curious.

Elizabeth July 6, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Well, I find this just interesting! I bought my first small sample of Amazing Meal at Whole Foods this evening. I was STUNNED to learn at how costly it was! Definitely not made for grad students! I don’t get a lot of greens so sure do hope I have more luck with it1

Cecilia July 6, 2009 at 7:58 pm

OMG, I begged you (random generator) to pick me, I really want to try out this stuff for so so long …. LET ME WINNNNNN :D

Alexis July 6, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Daniela July 6, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Heather I love you’re blog! You crack me up and I love all of your crazy recipes (I’m making oatgurt right now:)
I am, however, a fan of the Amazing Grasses and love the bars so I would love to be in the lottery.
Thanks!

Erin July 6, 2009 at 8:07 pm

A spinach leaf?! Only you, HEAB! :D

Maria July 6, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Sorry that you didn’t like the Amazing Grass. I would love to take it off of your hands. ;-)

marie July 6, 2009 at 8:42 pm

I’m stubborn, so I’d like to try this stuff for myself!

tracy July 6, 2009 at 8:42 pm

i’d like to try it. seems interesting!

Katherine July 6, 2009 at 8:42 pm

I haven’t tried amazing grass yet, hopefully i can try some!

Lina July 6, 2009 at 8:43 pm

haha sorry you didn’t like the amazing meal, it’s an acquired taste I guess. I love it! I’m bad and mix my hemp and raw shakes with some cacao powder, does wonders! I’d love to take all that grassy goodness off your hands ;) I’ll need some greens in me after all the sampling of goodies from the fancy food show.

Samantha July 6, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I really really wanted to try their product. I tried to use Jenna’s code and another but it keeps telling me shipping to Guam is $184 and THREE emails to their customer service has gotten zero response. So they WON’T get my money based on that alone. I’m with you, lots of greens in other ways like green oats and green monsters.

Thanks so much for sending me that heinous CB workout…I’ve now done it twice and LOVE it…unfortunately I’m seriously sick at the moment and have to put all workouts on hold.

charlotte July 6, 2009 at 9:03 pm

“you can add all the chocolate you want, but hemp protein powder will always taste like dirt.” Well, you don’t need to enter me in the contest – I’ll take your word for it! – but I did want to tell you your post made me laugh out loud:)

LISA July 6, 2009 at 9:35 pm

girlie, the only thing i have not yet tried from your stash is the greens BAR, but i heart all of the powder products!!! i currently have had to nix amazing grass products from my purchases due to budget concerns (boo hoo, i know), but i’d LOVE some freebie greens. thanks for sharing!

roseyrebecca July 6, 2009 at 9:41 pm

I’m kind of scared to try it. I don’t think it’s for me. That’s cool that they sent you such a generous sample. :-)

kelly July 6, 2009 at 9:44 pm

yummy! i wanna try!

gwen July 6, 2009 at 9:59 pm

I’ve been wanting to try these products since I’ve read so many positive reviews- I hope I can mask the dirty with some yummy fruit! : )

Tiffany July 6, 2009 at 10:00 pm

I’d love to try this Amazing Grass after hearing so much about it. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you.

Mandy July 6, 2009 at 10:12 pm

I’ve been looking into purchasing the sample pack of this stuff available on the website since I’ve been seeing it EVERYWHERE in the blogworld. If I could win it instead- so much the better!!

Kathy July 6, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Oh my goodness, I’d love to try the rest of your stash! Those bars are so expensive, but I’ve been eyeing them for such a long time :)

WholeBodyLove July 6, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Sorry you didn’t like the Amazing Grass :( To each his own, you seem to get PLENTY of greens into your diet :) It is pretty cool of you to try something new even though you are skeptical about it! I would love to try some as well!

Trilby Drew July 6, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Aw, I’m sorry about all of those poor little chia seeds that had to sacrifice themselves in the name of smoothie experimentation. Bummer about the Amazing Grass. But, hey, I’m game! I’ll try anything at least once! Count me in for the drawing!

Alisa - Frugal Foodie July 6, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Oh me, me, me! I have tried three of their products and love them all! I would love to try the others. While I’m not a major hempseed fan, I do like wheatgrass, so these hit my taste buds nicely.

I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy them, those chia seeds aren’t cheap!

Beaded Jeweler July 6, 2009 at 11:33 pm

Love your candidness, and although you didn’t like these, I’m intrigued. Proving the adage, “Any publicity is good publicity”.

Michelle July 7, 2009 at 12:38 am

Too bad you didn’t like the Amazing Grass products! I’d love to try them in my green smoothies. Thanks!

elaine July 7, 2009 at 12:51 am

like some of the others have mentioned, i really enjoyed and appreciate your honest no holds barred review. i would still love to try the remaining amazing grass products because believe it or not when you said, “that bar literally tasted like I rolled a ball of grass in some chocolate,” i thought “hmnn..tasty.” haha i guess it’s a good thing everyone’s tastebuds are different

Susan July 7, 2009 at 3:48 am

I’d be happy to take them off your hands! For some reason, I really like that “earthy” taste.

Scott in Ohio July 7, 2009 at 5:52 am

Hey Heather! I’ve been wanting to at least try the Amazing Grass stuff so maybe this is my shot.

And you know I’ve got the frozen bananas in the ready position!

Hilary July 7, 2009 at 6:18 am

Sorry you didn’t like it! I’m still willing to give it a try! I haven’t bought any cause it’s kinda pricy, but have heard so much about it on blogs. Have a great day!

Erin July 7, 2009 at 6:24 am

Hahahahaha this post was hilarious! I am definitely not interested – thanks for the laughs though!

Ellen - Peace in Motion July 7, 2009 at 6:37 am

Bummer those chias got wasted :(

I have super strange taste buds, and for some reason totally love the taste of hemp protein powder. To each his own!

insideiamdancing July 7, 2009 at 6:45 am

I really want to try it because everyone raves about it, though am pretty certain I’ll share your sentiments :P

Meghan (Making Love In The Kitchen) July 7, 2009 at 6:56 am

I don’t want to try them, but thanks for the offer. Isn’t that kind of like when someone tastes sour milk and winces and than passes it for someone else to taste?

I get contacted often about products and most often I say no thank you. If I wouldn’t eat it- I am not going to give it to others to eat. I once had a teacher in nutrition school who commented on the phenomenon of people living up for free samples- when those people are on the street giving it away. He pointed out that dog poo on the sidewalk is also free… just because it’s there doesn’t mean we should take it. Now… I am in no way comparing grass mixes to poo, I just mean that it is always so tempting to want free stuff ’cause it’s free.

And I write this as I look over at a total of 12 products that were sent to me from Garden of Life and I am trying to decide what to do with them. I suppose a giveaway will be coming soon.

Jennifer July 7, 2009 at 6:58 am

omg! i can’t believe you didn’t like amazing grass! i def think the taste of wheat grass must be acquired but it’s actually pretty good in orange juice (or other fruit juice) based smoothies. i used the various meal products in a smoothie with oj and frozen blueberries, rasps, cherries and strawberries with spinach and it was good! i did not like the chocolate poweder though so a def no go on that one. although it may be good if you add a ton of chocolate syrup to the mix..

btw…don’t forget about our immaculate baking coupon giveaway!

ttfn300 July 7, 2009 at 7:03 am

oh no! bummer! i must say i have tried two flavors i think now and really only liked the chocolate. i go through so much spinach (and don’t have a car so can’t get it at costco all the time), so I decided to see if it’d work as a sub… different. definately earthy! haven’t tried the bars, but now i’m scurred :)

Malena (justbeingb.com) July 7, 2009 at 7:16 am

I’m sorry you didn’t like the Amazing Grass stuff. I really love Amazing Meal! It would be fun to get some free stuff to help supplement the monthly(ish) “bill” for my Amazing Grass stash. :)

-Malena

Melanie Z July 7, 2009 at 7:17 am

ooooo, I’ve been wanting to try this “AMAZING Grass”, but I’m not willing to spend my hard earned cashola on it! (I know, I’m cheap) Sign me up!

Lea July 7, 2009 at 7:23 am

so sorry heabs (hope you don’t mind me calling ya that ^^) you didn’t enjoy the greens. howeva…girl over here is in love with them. granted you can tots taste the grassiness, but i appreciate the health benefits of it.

i haven’t tried the bars yet, so i’m reals interested in winning this stash. ^____^V

Becca July 7, 2009 at 7:25 am

LOL Heather! I’m going to pass on the Amazing Grass after your reviews… I don’t want anything that tastes like DIRT! I totally trust your opinion on it. But, I DO need to try the whole blending broccoli and oats… sounds interesting!
