Lightning Strikes

by HEAB on July 29, 2009

Hello my HEABies!

So, last night we had more crazy weather.  Lightning struck our Internet modem box and fried my Macbook power cord. :(  CD decided to drive into town to get some work done, and I tagged along to do a little blogging and catch up on some emails.  I’m actually typing this while sitting outside in the beautiful sunshine. Downtown Westcliffe offers curbside Internet access – so nifty!

Anyway, just wanted to pop in and say “Hi”.  Not sure how regularly I”ll be blogging as there are no Apple stores around here, and I’m going to have to order a new cord online.  However, I can still email and read blogs on CD’s laptop once we get a new modem.

I was worn out after yesterday’s 9 miles of walking, and just did about 3 1/2 this  morning with the pups.  Afterwards, I did 5 Sun Salutations and called it a day.  Nothing too exciting…except maybe breakfast. :)

Maggie Inspired

You'll never guess - don't even try.

After staring at all of Maggie’s honey lovin, I had to try some for myself.  I’ll be honest, honey is one of my fear foods.  For some reason, it scares me more than other natural sweeteners, but a tsp isn’t going to kill me, ya know?  I cooked 3/4 cup oat bran with 2 cups water and a stick of cinnamon.  I then blended my oats plus cinnamon with 2 lightly steamed carrots and topped it off with 1/2 chopped avocado and honey.  That tsp of honey did wonders for this bowl – delicious!

OK, hoping to sort through my inbox a bit before heading home.  If you don’t hear back from me right away, just know I haven’t forgotten about you.  This curbside Internet is actually much faster than the DSL connection at the house we’re renting.  I think I might have to street blog more often. :)

Happy Wednesday my friends!

Sorry to hear about your poor little power cord. And your eats look super tasty! Mmmmm… honey…

Ellen (Peace in Motion) July 29, 2009 at 2:22 pm

poor computer :( but that meal looks divine!

Sharon July 29, 2009 at 2:33 pm

don’t worry, honey scares me as welll!!! so does maple syrup sometimes.

Shelby July 29, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Aw, sorry about the cord! I hope you get a new one soon love!

I can’t stand the taste of honey! Ever since I was little I would gag everytime my mom wanted to try it for my sore throat. Agave on the other hand…I could drink the stuff! haha

Sarah (from See Sarah Eat) July 29, 2009 at 2:53 pm

Haha, curbside that is hilarious! Sorry about your cord, lightning sucks.

I used to use honey a lot but it scares me now too, as do most naturally sweet things now that I realize how my body reacts to sugar. I avoid artificial sweeteners too though, so sometimes it gets tough to avoid everything ;-) You are right, a little tsp won’t kill ya!

Whit July 29, 2009 at 2:53 pm

honey-carrot-cado oats? Only HEAB!

missyrayn July 29, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Sorry your power cord got fried. I guess it doesn’t understand you don’t do fried things :-)

Susan July 29, 2009 at 3:16 pm

I luuuurrve honey. My favourite snack at the moment is wasa crackers with a smear of honey and cinnamon. I’ve gotta try carrots in my oats, sounds like carrot cake for breakfast :)

balancejoyanddelicias July 29, 2009 at 3:23 pm

that avocado and honey combo is delicious! I tried it the other day and loved it! ;)

fartygirl July 29, 2009 at 3:37 pm

It’s interesting that you mention a fear of honey. It’s one of the natural sweeteners that totally reacts with my body like an unnatural sweetener. I get heart palpitations and everything.

Btw. since I’ve been co-opting your diet, my sugar cravings have gone away completely. Did I tell you this already? Oh well, one more time can’t hurt. :) thanks!

Maggie July 29, 2009 at 3:39 pm

I’m so glad you tried the honey. A little bit does go a long way, even though I like to dump it on.

Enjoy your less blogging time :)

Julia July 29, 2009 at 3:56 pm

So sorry about the modem and power cord! No good!
That walk looked amazing and so beautiful! Enjoy the street blogging haha!

ProteinGirl July 29, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Glad you are having a pleasant vacation! Have you tried creamed honey? On peanut/almond butter???? It is goodness words CANNOT describe! With some bananas or strawberries sliced on top and some cinnamon… so good!!!

jenngirl July 29, 2009 at 4:04 pm

haha sorry about your troubles, but I love that you’re bloggin’ from the streets!

I’ve never tried actual honey either, good to know it was a success!

Rosey Rebecca July 29, 2009 at 4:05 pm

Haha Street Blogging sounds fun! I didn’t like honey for a really long time and now I love it! It grows on you!

Deb July 29, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Gosh, they talk of all the health accolades of honey! I’m no more scared of honey than I am Agave, really. GI index or not?! And the taste is really luscious. Wonder what “creamed honey” is all about per Protein Girl!?? Yum!

OK that you’re on the street, just as long as you don’t end up in the gutter :-) Have a great night.

Maria July 29, 2009 at 4:29 pm

I know, Maggie is such a genius! Honey and avocado is divine :D

Happy happy Wednesday, Heather!!!

jacobc July 29, 2009 at 5:36 pm

MMMMmm.. honey.. try some on your kobacha, the best topping i have found so far!
CDs menu looks good, well dinner anyway.. And I LOVE those canned smoked oysters! They are on my list every week! Good iron to..

9 miles? Woah, walking is more tiring than running IMHO..

That sux with the modem,, i bet the thunder storms are pretty in that valley though..

Cheers, J

justrun July 29, 2009 at 5:41 pm

The storms have been crazy, no?! I thought the lightning was going to fry me earlier, much less the two computers I was working on.
Sorry about your cord– if you can hold out for a bit, we have an Apple store in Colorado Springs now. ;)

Evan Thomas July 29, 2009 at 6:01 pm

I’ve been on such an avocado kick lately, that actually looks like a great breakfast to me.

Marycela July 29, 2009 at 6:15 pm

street to blog lol

The breakfast looks delicious.

buffmuffy July 29, 2009 at 6:21 pm

justine July 29, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Ugh. Sorry about your Macbook :( . Hope it gets fixed asap. In the mean time enjoy your computer-less days :) . You already know what I think about those oats ;)

Miss Ya,
Justine

Melissa S. July 29, 2009 at 6:25 pm

ohhh…street blogging…sounds awesome.

hayleycepeda July 29, 2009 at 6:40 pm

That sucks about the cord…let’s hope the new one ships quickly! If you can add spinach to oats, which I finally did and it tastes delicious, then you can add carrots, corn – whatever floats your boat. I have the same kind of fear with honey…yet I’m ok with agave. Weird, huh?

carolinebee July 29, 2009 at 7:02 pm

I loove lightning and thunder!! Well except when it interferes with my technology :D My stepdad is in Houston a lot and texts me whenever they have crazy storms I’m so jealous! Street blogging sounds so gangstaaaa :D

Cindy July 29, 2009 at 7:15 pm

I always always always have to remind myself of that ole sayin’ “things happen for a reason” when crazy freaky goofy things like that happen…GRRR

why oh why, just when you have it all planned out!

oh well, we’ll still all be here waiting to hear how you are and what’s happening!

Did you ever see Benjamin Button? (that’s not the full title) there was a character that kept telling people throughout the movie he’s been struck by lightening 7 times …and each time he said that they’d play an old film reel (like a flashback) of him gettin’ hit by lightening different ways.

at first it was horrifying…then it became hysterical!

I dunno why I told you that except it’s what popped in my head when I read about your lightening hitting your internet connection.

(I am sleepy today) hahaha
enjoy that weather, crazy or not!
xo

Abby July 29, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Yikes on the lightning but big props on the outdoor blogging. If you say you’re a “street blogger,” it kinda gives you some ghetto cred (don’t be messing with the HEABs).

I have a minor honey hangup as well, but it’s delicious in Greek yogurt. And I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one that eats veggies with breakfast! The tastebuds know no clock, I tell ya.

Staci July 29, 2009 at 7:33 pm

I love honey! Good for you :) The weather has been crazy. It is not our usual Colorado!

HIRun July 29, 2009 at 7:54 pm

If you feel like driving there’s a Mac store in Colorado Springs and since your in town why not drive a couple more miles to Costco…..lots of good veggies and fruit in bulk.

Cherie July 29, 2009 at 8:32 pm

If your internet is down, there’s always the phone. Good to catch up with you!!

glidingcalm July 29, 2009 at 8:43 pm

avocado and honey sounds yummmmmmmmmmmmmm.

JB July 29, 2009 at 9:13 pm

Darn the lightening! Honey used to freak me out a bit too. But, it is soooo sweet and delicious. Moderation is key I suppose :)

amanda @ Panda Lunch July 29, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Wow, I love the thoughts of blending up the carrots in there, I might have to try that, as I am always trying to find new ways to fit veggies into breakfast!!

polly July 30, 2009 at 5:00 am

hihoneybunchesofoatbran n avocado!! :P

Love you. Can you come over for tea this morning? Okay, sounds good. You bring the ‘bran and I’ll cut us up an avocado.

Hope the internet gets up and running soon, but how FUN to only be able to be on the computer at a special place and time. I think that sounds perfect!!!

Enjoy the day, my sweet friend. Love you so much, H!!! xoxo Pol

psychoj1 July 30, 2009 at 5:33 am

Sorry about the cord! Hope everything gets fixed and you can continue blogging curbside! Haha!
Mmm that breakfast sounds really yummy!
<3 jess

Holly July 30, 2009 at 6:21 am

Yikes, sorry about your cord – but so thankful the lightening didn’t strike closer to you! That is scary stuff. I love me some thunderstorms but ligtening is no good.

I never would have thought to add honey to oat bran – genius! Well, all I have is agave nectar, but I’m thinkin’ that would be along the same lines? :-)

CaSaundra July 30, 2009 at 7:49 am

Ohh that darn lightning! It can be super dangerous–glad your safe, but it sucks about your cord :-(

elise July 30, 2009 at 8:14 am

i just read an article yesterday about how 5 people were struck by lightning yesterday. one died. and all yesterday i was scared to leave the apt. there were massive bolts really close together, and i kept thinking, am i safe inside? i googled can i get struck by lightning in the shower! haha. im such a loser. get me back to CA!!!

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) July 30, 2009 at 9:03 am

Street blogging? Hilarious! The weather has been nast here in NYC too though. I think this summer is whack nation-wide! So sorry to hear about the comp. casualty though, that’s a bummer. Breakfast did look good! I use honey sparingly myself as well because I don’t think of it as a universal type sweetener, but in certain things I just luuuuuuurve it.

Deva July 30, 2009 at 9:16 am

I love honey, especially local honey, it’s sooo good :-) I don’t think I would have ever thought to put avocado in my breakfast – genius!

Holly July 30, 2009 at 9:38 am

Tiffany! Van July 31, 2009 at 11:37 am

I am swimming in Zucchini and was wondering what to do with it all. Thanks for the idea!

brandi July 31, 2009 at 12:27 pm

you know, that sounds like one way I might like carrots :) we got 4 huge avocados from our friends’ orchard on our layover in Miami the other day, so I’m going to be eating a lot of it soon.

i hope you are having a great time out there – it’s beautiful.
