Heather Pie

by HEAB on October 28, 2009

Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!

First off, a big huge hug and thank you to Zesty Cook for not only his creativity and hard work but also for his patience with me AND WordPress yesterday. Zesty and I started working together early yesterday morning, and did not get my new blog up and running until late last night. Thanks again Zesty – lovin HEAB’s new look, and I was so excited that Abby’s winning photo made the banner. If you haven’t done so already, please stop by Zesty’s blog as he has so many amazing recipes as well as a ton of helpful tips for bloggers. His How to Take Amazing Food Pictures post is one of my favorites.

Now, onto pie. So, back in my stalking days, I used to woo CD with my raw desserts, or Heather Pies as he liked to call them. I used whatever I had on hand. Sometimes we’d end up with a fruit tart covered in cashew cream, and other times we’d dine on raw fudge with avocado ice-cream. Anyway, after we got married, the wooing with raw desserts stopped. (sorry CD, you know I still love ya!). However, the name stuck, and I became CD’s Heather Pie. :)

Yesterday, in-between working on the blog, walking the dogs, beating my beeping smoke detector with a hammer, and doing a little massage therapy, I decided I needed to make my husband a pie. I had all the ingredients on hand including one last fresh POM Wonderful pomegranate from my trip to California. I couldn’t wait to get started.

First I made the crusts.

IMG_3473.JPG
This is my favorite raw crust recipe of all time, and I have no idea where I got it, the Internet maybe? So, if the following is your recipe….thanks! It’s great.
Ingredients:
2 cups raw pecans
2 cups pitted Medjool dates soaked for 1 hour
Zest of one lemon
2 tsp Nama Shoyu (raw unpasteurized soy sauce)
Freshly grated nutmeg
Combine all ingredients in food processor and press into parchment-lined cake pans.
Next up, I made my pie filling.

IMG_3474.JPG
Into the Vita-Mix went 2 cups soaked raw cashews, 1 1/2 cups water, 3/4 cup POM Wonderful arils, 1 packet stevia (not raw), and vanilla. I envisioned a lovely pink, but what I got was more purple. Oh well, still fun.
I then flipped my crust out of their pans and began to assemble my pie.
IMG_3475.JPG  IMG_3476.JPG
In-between the 2 crust, I spread a layer of pie filling and topped it with cherries and POM arils. I then placed the other crust on top and covered it with another layer of filling plus more POM arils and one crushed square of Baker’s unsweetened baking chocolate (not raw).

   IMG_3482.JPG
CD’s Pomegranate Chocolate Cherry Heather Pie
How did CD like his pie? It was a hit, but thankfully he saved me some for Raw Wednesday.

My Breakfast: Raw Heather Pie on top of cooked vanilla protein oat bran. Perfect. :)

You’re my hero. I am so making this for Thanksgiving. It’s been a long time since I’ve made a raw pie — I’m overdue! Might have to make two or three just to make up for the absence ;)

Great new look for the blog! And the raw pie looks great. I would never think to put soy sauce…does it give a strong flavor?

Erika, Nope, not much flavor. Just adds a little salty kick.

Gorgeous! Yeah, the nama shoyu threw me too. Would have never thought of it.

You know I love you, but I’m on the fence regarding your new header. I think I like it with the jar OR the almonds but not both. You know I’m nothing but honest – the rest of the site looks AWESOME!

Don’t hate me – I’ll send you dates to make up for it! :)

Reply

Heather Eats Almond Butter October 28, 2009 at 12:44 pm

Tiffany, No hating from me ever. Thanks for the honesty. No dates required – I’m stocked already, and now I remember why I don’t buy them. :)

That is so sweet :) I love the new look. We call each other “sweetie pie” and “honey bear”. Silly, I know – but it’s funny how nicknames like that always have to do with sweet things or desserts.

Hey HEAB, How long did it take for the crusts to set up? It sounds like the mixture would be soft, but the crust looks quite firm. thx!

Reply

Heather Eats Almond Butter October 28, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Greenbrean, I put them in the freezer for about 10 to 15 minutes – I forgot to mention that. I’ll add it to the post right now.

Your pie looks amazing…love the layers and I love how the crust is raw. I am 90% done of the semi massive undertaking of transferring every single blog recipe I have created into a cleaner but still with pics separate PDF version. A cookbook may be in my future and am getting my ducks in a pdf row :)

I just stumbled on an old raw vegan choc pie recipe RIGHT before I read this post. Your pie is gorgeous my dear!

And so is your new site! Love it. Seems all the cute girls are re-doing their cute sites with fabulous even cuter final results :)

I blog directly from blogger. I never could figure out wordpress properly, thus I am a blogger blog but do own my domain. And do it from a mac. So no wordprss or windows cool blogging tricks for me and that’s fine. The 2 software programs I used were costing me tons of time so I scrapped em. Tell me when you get up to speed w/ Ecto what you end up thinking of it!

Love the design. Thanks for answering my questions about soy too. One more question -what about edamame – that’s soybeans right? Is that a ‘worst’ type of soy as well? Thanks! Oh and love the raw pies – they look so cute…I’d stick some ice cream in between them and make a sandwich :) oops…

Reply

Heather Eats Almond Butter October 28, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Eatmovelove, Edamame is not a processed form of soy. It’s nothing buy soybeans. Compare that to the ingredients listed on the back of a box of Morningstar burgers. If you choose to eat soy, edamame is a good choice as it’s soy in it’s natural state. Plus, it’s really good dipped in garlic salt. Wish it didn’t bother my stomach!

Love both–and the name too.

Nice work!! I also approve of the pic of the almond butter
on the right vs. the left.

I had a jar of almond butter in my car for emergencies

Heather, my dear! I love the new blog look…something I would totally pick out for you..and for me!

Also, that pie looks absolutely wonderful! Geez woman…you are talented!

Got through the tough part of the cleanse and am now in the food testing phase, where we get to see the true effects food has on our bodies! I tested soy today and the soy milk, tofu and edemame did great…the homemade miso soup however did not treat the tummy so well…and made me yawn lots! Weird! Anywhoo…more revelation to come. Miss you and hope you are just great.
Hugs!
