So, this is my final HEAB Birthday giveaway post. I want to thank all of you for your wonderful comments over the past week. It was so nice to finally meet many delurkers, and I loved reading all your smoothie recipes and pancake topping ideas. You guys are so creative!
When people tell me they looked back through all my archived posts, I usually cringe. I had no idea what I was doing when I first started blogging, or what I even wanted to write about. However, as the weeks turned into months, I guess I found my blogging niche. So, before I announce today’s giveaway, I wanted to share some of my favorite HEAB posts with you…

Regarding your blogging evolution…I kind of like going back through and reading how you came to your current eating/exercise combo. It was really interesting to watch you get started with regular yoga and then get into your groove with that. I think it helps to show people that no one really has the right answers when starting out.
And I still have no idea what I’m doing with my blog, to be honest…it’s like this cacophony of simple living/knitting/food/cat obsession/religion/soapbox. Hopefully I’ll settle into one soon;).

No vita mix combo for me today, but oat bran with pumpkin and a touch of molasses. A new combo for me, but it’s perfect for the 4 degree morning that it is! Love reading your blog. So impressed with your creativity in the kitchen. Bring those dogs back to CO and come see us again!

I think that is the point of the blog. It is meant to evolve and the person evolves with it. Chances are your posts may be entirely different after another year from this.
A blender would be a georgeous gift to someone. At least a good Christmas or wedding gift.

OHH MY GOD!!! I need one SO badly, my blender is on its last leg and gives off this awful smell whenever I try to blend ice, which is just not conducive to making protein ice cream! I’ve been dying to try blended oat bran…I would simply cry tears of happiness if I ever won this.

Stephanie, Good question – I think it’s the comments and email I get everyday. So kind and encouraging. I started my blog to get my story out there and help others, and when I hear back from people that I’m actually helping totally keeps me going. I love it.

I could really use a new blender. The one I have is one that my dad gave me several years ago. It has to be at least 10 years old. I rarely use it cause it doesn’t work well. But i would use a new one to make hummus, smoothies, soup and so much more

I thought I’d come out of the woodwork though and tell you that I despised oatmeal (not in cookies, of course, but as a meal) before I started reading your blog. Once I saw you had piled some nut butter on one of your creations, I thought I’d give oatmeal another try. Now, I’m eating it several times a week and adding anything and everything to it. Hi Heather, this has nothing to do with your give away as i don’t think i qualify since i live on the otherside of the world..
but i was wondering if you could enlighten me on this… does doing pilates or yoga give the same toning results as if you use weights? or how would it differ?
If i did yoga or pilates, do i still need to do weights (i.e. strength training)?
I would like to try yoga or pilates but am hoping to find out more before i fully embark on it. As i have been doing strength training with weights all this while, i thought i could switch things up a little and you have done yoga, hence my asking.

Yoga has toned my body like nothing else. I ran and lifted weights for years, and never saw results like I have with yoga. I’ve heard many people say the same thing of Pilates although I haven’t done much of it myself. Yoga will lengthen as well as strengthen your muscles, and it is a wonderful toning workout for the entire body in my opinion. It depends on what kind of classes you take as power and vinyasa yoga will strengthen your body in different ways than say hatha yoga or yin yoga, but all are great.

– Polly has some great online videos perfect for beginners. They are all about 10 minutes in length, completely free, and a great place to start b/c she does the yoga along with you. – Dave Farmar: http://www.davefarmar.com/. His podcasts are pretty advanced and free. However, I’ll be honest, his constant talking drives me nuts! – I also really like Sadie Nardini half hour power series. Maggie posted a link here: http://www.thesaladgirl.com/2009/01/07/refreshing-power-yoga -sequence/. – Yoga to the People has 9 different 60 minute power yoga classes you can download as well: http://www.yogatothepeople.com/tryOnlineClass.shtml – You can try tons of free 20 minute classes over at http://www.yogadownload.com, one of my favorite yoga websites. What a great prize! I want one–but not for ME. I have a VitaMix already and use it almost daily! I LOVE making great shakes and “ice creams” in it–a regular “dessert” is frozen berries, canned coconut milk, erythritol to sweeten and maybe a bit of protein powder. Yum! If I were to win this, I’d give it to my boyfriend, a 46-year-old who’s lost nearly 50 lbs. over the last 3 years I’ve been “training” him! He’s full-time “daddy” to 2 kids and time is limited. This would greatly help his dietary efforts!

Yes yes yes! Vita-mix! A week ago I completely blew out my tiny blender making Chocolate Covered Katie’s Fudge Babies. As in, the electrical outlet sparked, the breaker tripped and smoke literally came out of the motor as it ground to a halt.

I love the blog and I want your hair- it’s thick and gorgeous. I go through phases where mine will be thinning at a worryingly fast rate, but then as soon as I seem to stop thinking about it, the problem disappears. I remember in your weight loss post you mentioned that your hair was in really poor health until you incorporated more fats into your diet. I wasn’t lying when I said that almonds are one of the cornerstones of my diet, so I don’t think I have a problem when it comes to not taking in enough fat. So I ask- in your worldly travels, what diet switches have been the best for your hair?
That sounds totally vain, but I have a dumpling shaped head and would not make an attractive Sinead O’Connor if I did have to shave off the remaining scraggly locks I’ve got! I just don’t want to scare the children, you see

Camille, Thanks so much for the hair compliments. Well, it sounds like you’re getting enough fat. That was my problem when my hair was dry and brittle. Not enough fat, and probably not enough calories in general.
As far as losing hair, stress can play a major factor as well as hormonal changes, genetics, or thyroid disorders. It’s also a major symptom of having PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).
Since your problem tends to go away when you stop thinking about it makes it sounds like it’s stress related. Do you think that might be the case? If so, maybe doing some things to relieve your stress levels will help. Breathe my friend. I know it sounds so simple, but some deep breathing techniques can change lives, and as far as your fat intake goes, almonds are wonderful, but make sure you’re getting enough Omega 3′s. If you’re not vegetarian, think about supplementing with some fish oil. Sounds like you’re getting plenty of Omega 6′s, but it’s the 3′s that we usually need more of in our diets. I WANT ONE!
I need a Vita-Mix so my beautiful and talented wife can prepare Green Monsters on a daily basis. As a school teacher I’m destined to the free school luches which often include deep fried delacacies and wilted ice-burg salads. I need my nutrition via the fabulous and nutritious Green Monster – made quickly and efficiently with the famed VM 5200 machine.
My favorite ingredients are spinach, frozen bananas, almond butter (that one’s for you HEAB), and a squirt of agave. One more day of powdered potatoes and over-cooked green bean as my only sustinence? I don’t…think…I can… go… on… without the Vita-Mix. The Vita-Mix would cure all of my ails!
Need… Vita-Mix.
1. My old blender has accumulated quite the rust collection, and thus the blades are finiky and prone to stop spinning in the midst of a smoothie creation. It needs to be upgraded, but I just cannot swing the VM investment right now.
2. Gluten intolerance. Pricey. I’d love to use the dry blade to make my own flours from quinoa, millet, buckwheat, amaranth, teff, etc. Save a ton, and have some fun with new recipes to boot!
3. Green Monsters. Love em’. And need em’. Great way to boost the nutrition in a yummy snack. The VM would pulvarize any bit of spinach or kale chunk (which can ruin a Green Monster any day).
4. I have a pretend Vita-Mix drawing hanging from my kitchen cabinet. I have already christened a spot on my countertop for the beloved VM5200.
5. Protein ice-cream. Nuff’ said.
6. Almond milk! I’d love to make my own….
Mmmk. Could go on, but won’t. Moral of the story: a Vita-Mix would be a lovely addition to my life!

I made the protein ice cream for the first time today because i have the flu and cant swallow anything. well i have made it before but never used xantham gum. needless to say i burnt out the motor on my blender. Man wish i had a vita-mix

Beth, I usually use about 1/8 to 1/4 tsp xanthan. I need to update my recipe. Also helps to blend all ingredients together before blending in the ice. I need to check out Life Basics Plant Protein. Never heard of it. Thanks for the tip, and best of luck in the giveaway! Love, Heather

i would love a VitaMix! I have a food processor I use every day but it is not great. I hear such good things about the Vitamix. I am glad to discover your blog through Meghan from Makin’ Love in the Kitchen.

long time yogi who is always watching your yummy edible inventions (your blog always makes me hungry though lol) Ive been craving to make some holiday nut butters with almonds and macadamias , along with that hint of dark chocolate,and Peruvian coffee yum ! funny story I actually burned out my friends vita trying this recipe but it survived but getting a vita mixer would make my next Christmases the best !

I would make a simple smoothie to begin with. Why? Because my current blender (a hand-me-down from my parents wedding 30 years ago) now smells like burning plastic when I turn it on, and the result is a large lump of frozen berries.
Also, because, if I don’t get a Vitamix, my boy may just tape my mouth shut because he keeps hearing how much I want one!
I usually just like to lurk around, but I had to comment for this! I’m a mostly raw foodie, but because of my less than stellar blender, my morning smoothies often have big chunks of spinach that I have to chew as I drink… yuck… Love the blog!
Hi Heather, a Vitamix would be a great upgrade to my Black and Decker, bought in 1997, for the purpose of making Slim Fast Shakes!!!!!
I could definitely fit one of these babies in with all the rest of my kitchen gadgets.

I would loveee to have one of these babies for my college dorm. My room is smaller than a shoebox and a vita-mix would help me prepare lots of healthy snacks and drinks without taking up a lot of precious space
I recently started reading your blog and I actually bought some almond butter from Trader Joe’s for the first time, and it is so, so yummy. I’ve been dipping everything from baby carrots to sesame sticks in it. I can probably inhale half a jar of this stuff in one go.

Hope I still made the deadline! I’ve been reading all these healthy living blogs for the past couple months, and I’ve been inspired to eat healthier, which is not easy for a senior in college. Lately I have been making frozen fruit purees (plus whatever I find in my fridge) for a snack, and this blender would be AMAZING. The one I use now is on its last leg.
