First Workout of The Month

by HEAB on January 4, 2010

Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!

My arms feel like Jell-O, and my burpees could use a lot of work. :)

This morning, I started my month of online personal training with Lindsey from Lean Bodies Health and Fitness. Yesterday, I wrote the workouts would last 45 minutes to an hour, but they are actually only 30 to 45 minutes. After warming up on our stationary bike for 5 minutes, I did some Hyperbolic Resistance Training with a Pulse Pyramid. It basically involved 5 different exercises (reverse lunges, burpees, jumping jacks, etc), each done for 30 seconds. For the first round, I did one exercise for 30 seconds and then rested for 30 seconds. Then, I added an exercise each round until all I was doing all 5 in a row with a rest period at the end of each round, and then I built back down. The entire pyramid took about 16 minutes, but it was intense! I then cooled down on the bike for 10 minutes and did some plank and side plank ab work. Total workout time was 38 minutes. Short and efficient, just like I prefer my workouts to be.

It was then time for breakfast. You know what’s better than oats in a waning nut butter jar?????

Oats in a waning ice-cream container! There was about one serving left, and I poured my cooked oat bran mixed with Jay Robb vanilla rice protein powder, cinnamon, and maca on top of the remaining ice-cream. So Delicious!

I’m leaving the comments open until midnight tonight on my Goddess Guidebook giveaway post. Click here for a chance to win one of Leonie’s beautiful 2010 workbook/planners.

For any Facebookers out there, I finally created a HEAB page. To become a fan, click here. Many thanks for all of your support!

Also, thank you for all your well wishes and healing prayers. I’m still congested, but no fever or aches. Definitely nothing but a cold. Yay – no flu.

For many of you, myself included, it’s our first week back at work. Seek out the positives and smile. Spring will be here before we know it! :)

Oats in an ice cream container! Sounds so sinful! I love it!

I love starting my morning out with a good workout!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is January 4, 2010 at 10:51 am

Heather I LOVE burpees. They are the one exercise I ALWAYS do and make my clients do – total love/hate rela, but I think they are kick-butt! You go girl. :)

Evan Thomas January 4, 2010 at 10:52 am

That looks delicious! I haven’t tried their vanilla bean but had their chocolate amaretto for the first time last night and it was unreal good

ilanalala January 4, 2010 at 10:53 am

I totally used So Delicious Coconut ice cream in my smoothie this morning…ice cream is totally for breakfast.

Sounds like an awesome work out!

Mama Pea January 4, 2010 at 10:55 am

I guarantee, you are the only healthy living blogger eating ice cream for breakfast on January 4th. This is part of why I love you so.

Lauren January 4, 2010 at 10:56 am

Too funny-my hubby has been eating oatmeal with ice cream since he was a kid and will eat my big pots of oats with some Breyer’s vanilla. :) Glad to hear you’re not too sick. I want to be a fan, but the link wasn’t working? Thanks for the positive Monday message :)

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 4, 2010 at 11:00 am

Lauren, I updated the link. It should work now. If not, click on the icon on my sidebar. Thanks! Oh, and sounds like you picked a good man. ;)

Chrysta January 4, 2010 at 11:07 am

This sounds awesome!! Oats in a coconut ice cream container. I love it! I finally tried the Jay Robb protein powder and it is good stuff!! Only chocolate so far but I cant wait to try the vanilla. Good luck with your personal training and I hope you feel better!

Erica January 4, 2010 at 11:20 am

What a great way to start the week- love boot camp style workouts like that! And of course, your breakfast creation is droooool worthy! Happy New Year! Sorry I’ve been a little MIA

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 4, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Erica, No worries. I’m happy you enjoyed your holidays with your family!

Rachel January 4, 2010 at 11:22 am

Mmm ice cream as part of breakfast sounds divine!

Heather @ The Joyful Kitchen January 4, 2010 at 11:30 am

What a great idea! I might go buy a thing of ice cream solely to make oats in the leftovers :)

Danielle January 4, 2010 at 11:31 am

I love that ice cream! I walked by the frozen food section the other day and noticed they came out with a new slew of flavors
Burpees are tough but they really make you sweat!

eaternotarunner January 4, 2010 at 11:32 am

Love the ice cream container idea….sounds delicious! Feel better!

Gelareh @ Orange Truffle January 4, 2010 at 11:37 am

Ice cream as part of breakfast.. Brilliant :)

Did you have to battle the gym crowed today or did you do your workouts at home?

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 4, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Gelareh, Nope no crowds. I dropped my gym membership last year since I never used it. I’m just doing these workouts at home.

Rose January 4, 2010 at 11:42 am

Oooh. I’ll become a HEAB fan :)

livingfreeforever January 4, 2010 at 11:43 am

Holy Cow-I mean Coconut :D Seeing your oats in ice cream made me want to scream!! HAVE to STOP looking at it NOW!!

I have never done a burpee and would probably fall flat on my face. Sounds like a great workout. Happy Monday my friend :)

Anna January 4, 2010 at 11:53 am

Wow– sounds like an intense workout! I’ve never done a burpee!

erintakescontrol January 4, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Oh burpees, how brutal they are. Oats and ice cream – your brekkie is brilliant! Totally becoming a fan on FB, like now!

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) January 4, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Happy belated birthday, HEAB! So sorry to have missed wishing you well on your actual b-day, but it was awesome catching up on the past couple days in birthday-land (aside from your cold, that is–bummer :( )

Can’t tell you how jealous I am of your Wii Fit! I got to try it over the holidays and it was teh first time I actually thought I might really enjoy having a Wii. Fun stuff–enjoy! xo

Veggiesmack January 4, 2010 at 1:01 pm

Mmm! Your oat bran looks so tasty! I love the Purely Decadent coconut milk ice cream. It’s the best!

Hope you’re over your cold and feeling better soon!

Whitney @ Lettuce Love January 4, 2010 at 1:09 pm

Mmm ice cream for breakfast — I could get on board with that :)

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) January 4, 2010 at 1:19 pm

sounds like a great workout and I’m glad you felt up to doing it. Great idea with the ice cream. I suppose there are lots of “jar” yummies to be consumed, right? Salsa if you want savory oats, ricotta (savory), hummus, etc. Hadn’t thought about it much. Good thinking old bean.

Lindsey January 4, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Glad you liked the pyramid! It usually takes 24 minutes though… Hm. Did you do 1, rest, 1, 2, rest, up to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, rest and then 1, 2, 3, 4, rest and back down?

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 4, 2010 at 9:17 pm

Lindsey, Yes…wonder where I went wrong. Did I skip a set or something???

Lindsay January 4, 2010 at 2:14 pm

Your breakfast idea is genius!!! Oats in the ice cream jar. I hope this one catches on, HEAB :)

Katie January 4, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Ice cream for breakfast? You are my hero.

Sagan January 4, 2010 at 2:43 pm

That guidebook is adorable. Oatmeal in an ice cream tub? YES PLEASE. I’ve fanned-it-up on FB :)

hayleycepeda January 4, 2010 at 3:03 pm

That sounds like a serious workout! I took a bootcamp class at the Y the other day that had the same format. There were 10 exercises total where we started with one exercises, then jogged around the b-ball court, then did 1 & 2, jogged, then 1, 2 and 3, jogged, 1, 2, 3, 4, jogged, etc…all the way up until 10. It was insane but an awesome workout! Maybe I need to throw that stuff in when I train some of my clients. :) I’ll check out that website!

What an awesome start to the year! I’m really glad you created a facebook fan page.

Tamzin January 4, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Wow that looks like a huge breakfast, your so tiny how do you fit it all in!? x

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 4, 2010 at 9:13 pm

Tamzin, I usually eat a pretty big breakfast, and although I eat a lot throughout the day, the foods are usually pretty low cal – lots of veggies, proteins, etc.

Savannah Brentnall January 4, 2010 at 3:18 pm

I just can’t do those burpees. I used to try them all the time in my karate classes, but my knees won’t let me do them fast. I can do them if I take it very slowly, but that sort of destroys the point of them.

Ameena January 4, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Ice cream at breakfast! I don’t think anyone can top that. Looks delicious!!

Gracie @ GirlMeetsHealth January 4, 2010 at 3:43 pm

That looks YUM. I must admit that I’ve never tried oat bran :/ But I really want to…soon! Heather – what would you say is the best way for me to cook my first batch?

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 4, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Gracie, I would recommend cooking your oat bran on the stovetop. I usually use 1/2 cup oat bran and 1 1/2 cups water. It will seem watery at first, but just let it simmer and keep stirring – only takes a few minutes. It will get thicker and it’s gets “fluffier” with the extra water. Then add in whatever you usually add to any other hot cereal – any mix-ins or toppings. I usually keep it pretty simple and just stir in some protein powder when it’s done cooking and then let my oat bran cool for a few minutes. It will get thicker. My favorite topping is crunchy nut butter, although it’s pretty tasty with ice-cream too. :)

Shelby January 4, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Wow, what a kick butt workout! I love when it gets intense and you just want to quit, but you keep going and you feel amazing at the end! Love!

missyrayn January 4, 2010 at 5:14 pm

I stink at strength training but I’m going to take a cue from you and get some in tonight.

eatmovelove January 4, 2010 at 5:58 pm

Okay, you rock – WTG on ice cream for breakfast and with oats?! Yummers. There is always room for ice cream :) …although probably not the amount I consume…how do you like your new routine?? are you motivated by it? i can’t get into any type of strength training …or routine for that matter…blah day(S) oh well…enjoy your night.

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 4, 2010 at 9:07 pm

Eatmovelove, Day 1 on the new routine went well, and I was excited about trying out a new workout. I’ll be blogging about it throughout the month. I think it’s fun to change things up – keeps me motivated, and I love that the workouts are short but very effective.

Ashley January 4, 2010 at 6:59 pm

I LOVE the oats in an ice cream container! No matter how cold it gets, I can always eat ice cream, and I bet the hot-cold combo was deeeeelicious!

Lauren January 4, 2010 at 7:21 pm

I feel like my burpies need much work too. For some reason, I never think that I am doing them right, until I feel it the next day! ;)

Oats in a coconut milk tub is just about one of the most amazing ideas I have ever seen!!!!
You’re too much! ;)

Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) January 4, 2010 at 8:12 pm

I thought I was the only girl that ate ice cream for breakfast! I love a great efficient workout! Here is my way to eat ice cream in the morning http://thenondairyqueen.blogspot.com/2009/05/this-ice-cream-is-in-fact-oatmeal.html#comments. Just thought I would share with you so you can enjoy it more often!

theemptynutjar January 4, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Wow – as a walker , I marvel at the stuff you do. Amazing Heather.
Oats/cereal + ice cream = yummy breakfast
Now you just need to add MORE stuff…fruits, nut butters, etc etc etc (i could go on and on).
Anyway, ice cream for breakfast sounds great. What is your favorite flavor anyway? The dairy ice creams always have amazing variety to choose from, not sure if you have a favorite in the coconut ice cream. Have a nice night.

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 4, 2010 at 9:06 pm

Nutjar, Never met a coconut milk ice-cream I didn’t like. My favorite would probably be the chocolate mint flake. I love any kind of chocolate/mint combo. So sweet and refreshing. :)

Becky January 4, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Holy Yum! Just when I though breakfast could not get any better ice cream and oats! Heather you make my mouth water! Can you just be my breakfast chef?

daintyvegan January 4, 2010 at 9:26 pm

That’s good that you’re starting to feel better, being sick blows. I’ve been feeling off for the past few days but I’m marking it down as lack of sleep/wacky eating habits.

Oats and ice creams would be sooo good!

Ashlei January 4, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Heather, you’re a genius! So Delicious coconut milk ice cream + oatmeal….sounds amazing! :)

janetha January 4, 2010 at 10:39 pm

woo i am a fan! even before i read this post :)

i love burpees.. but i hate them.. ugh.

Melissa S. January 4, 2010 at 11:19 pm

sounds intense! i need to do that workout!

elleneatsbeats January 4, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Definitely had to look up what a burpee was! I’ve never heard them called that before. Love the coconut milk/oat combo, I had it the other day for breakfast. Its just like yogurt, right? :)

Heather Eats Almond Butter January 5, 2010 at 4:59 am

Ellen, I have had the coconut milk yogurt, but yesterday’s breakfast was oat bran with the coconut milk ice-cream. Their ice-cream is my favorite! The yogurt is a bit too runny and sweet for my taste.

Bekah January 5, 2010 at 7:11 am

Yay for facebook fan pages! ;) ;)

And hahaha ooh Heather, now I’m really paying attention to your pictures taken by reaching your arm out your door, after Deb made that comment. Soo perfect. Hehe.

Brittany January 5, 2010 at 7:21 am

I actually saw the page on Facebook before reading this post so I’m already a fan!!

I can’t wait to read more about your month of personal training- it sounds fun.

brandi January 5, 2010 at 8:20 am

Happy Late Birthday Heather!!! It looks like you had a great one – movie, jeans!, pancakes, cookies, ice cream, and a Wii. What could be better? :)

jenngirl January 5, 2010 at 1:40 pm

That workout sounds intense! Love it :) And I love that breakfast out of an ice cream container…perfect!
