Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!
What do you crave when you are sick? All I want is bread and nut butter. In fact, the last time I was sick, I think the only thing I ate for 2 days straight was warm pita bread smeared with almond butter. Yesterday, I had bread on the brain, but there was no pita bread to be found. So instead, I munched on the following…
Lunch consisted of a bowl of Hot Chocolate Soup (8 ounces almond milk, 1 TBSP cocoa powder, 1/2 avocado, sweetener of choice blended in the Vita until warm) plus 2 warm tortillas for dippin.
Afternoon snack…
Gina’s raw Bloomin Onion Bread smeared with tahini. Gina, it’s so good. Thanks again!
Next up was dinner. My taste buds were screaming for bread, but I wanted to give my body some protein and vegetables. Hmm, what could I possibly make that was high in protein and contained vegetables, yet tasted like a big plate of carbs?
Green protein pancakes to the rescue! I made my usual recipe but whipped 4 of the egg whites with 1/4 tsp cream of tartar and folded them into the batter after blending in 1/4 cup wheat bran and 2 handfuls of spinach. The recipe made 12 pancakes, and I topped them with some raw almond butter. Very satisfying. Thanks to everyone who recommended adding cream of tartar to my egg whites. They turned out so fluffy. Love the fluff factor!
This is day 3 of no exercise. I’m pretty bummed as I was so excited about all my workouts from Lindsey for the week. However, I know my body needed the rest so that it could get better. I’m starting to feel like my old self again, and I hope to get back to exercising over the weekend. We shall see.
I often get requests to promote various giveaways happening in the blogosphere, and I’m having a hard time keeping up with all of them. So, I created a giveaway page. I hope to update it weekly, and you can click here for instructions on how to submit your giveaway. This way, readers can just click on the giveaway tab on the front page of my blog to see what giveaways are going on for the week. You like?
Also, don’t forget to submit your slogan for Emily’s T-shirt project. She’s looking for a healthy eating slogan, and should she choose to use your slogan, you’ll receive a free shirt. Simply leave any ideas in the comment section below. Thanks!
Oh, and my apologies to our local weatherman. Sorry I called you a liar yesterday…

Doesn’t look like 1 to 3 inches, but I’ll take it!

Hot chocolate soup looks and sounds amazing. You are so creative, Heather! When I am sick I usually crave carbs, too. Something with bread (even though I normally don’t like bread) and soups.
That is definitely not 103 inches- but some snow is better than no snow! I hope you feel better!
I think the giveaway tab sounds like a great idea…very accessible! the pancakes look yummy!
just keep resting, and i hope you better soon! i’ll be thinking of the healthy eating slogan today
Thankfully, i haven’t been sick in a while, so I forget what I crave.
That soup sounds so good! This morning I was craving chocolate avocado pudding after my workout instead of greek yogurt, so I went for it. Not sure how the trading of protein for fat will feel tomorrow but I figure if it’s a craving it can’t be a bad thing
Love the protein pancake idea, i might have to try that next time i am craving too many carbs
Carbs are the only thing I crave when I’m sick but hot chocolate soup sounds pretty delicious too!
I always crave tea and soup… and cheesecake. I hate being sick!! Don’t worry about the exercise situation- you’ll be right back on top of it in a day or two. I hope you feel better HEABs!!
Your hot chocolate soup sounds awesome!!
Your hot chocolate soup looks delcious! And I reeeeeeally need to make those pancakes of yours. Every time I see them I start to drool a little
i never lose my appetite when i get sick. i just crave carbs, carbs, carbs… and i usually give in to the cravings.
When I’m sick, I want nothing but cold, cold water and steam. I have to force myself to eat!
When I’m sick I totally crave the carbs–bread, oatmeal, cereal (especially cereal), pasta–anything. When I’m sick I get really hungry for some reason.
Chocolate soup looks amazing! I’ll have to try that!
When I’m sick I definitely crave comfort foods, and often give myself (too much) leeway to overeat them.
I’m with you in the Cold Club. My nose is currently running a marathon.
This is day 2 of staying home and not exercising (yeah I’m restless, too), and as far as eats go, I’ve been wanting warm, mushy stuff. I made Sniffle Soup from ED&BV yesterday and it hit the spot! Oh and yeah bread/grains are consumed frequently too. Speaking of which, lunch time!
Feel better soon…
I’m not sure I have cravings per say,but I think I would have to be on my deathbed to NOT have an appetite or make myself eat.hehe….I’ve been under the weather, too.I had protein pancakes and Better Than Peanut Butter last night. It didn’t make me feel better, but they weredelicious!!

Hope you feel better soon my sweet friend!! Praying for those little cold buggies to go away! I am always fighting off carb cravings as I don’t feel well most of the time LOL! Seriously though- whenever I am having a bad day, and they are pretty often at the mo- all I want is carbs and almond butter! It’s good to listen to what your body wants and needs though. Dinner consists of kabocha smothered in AB most of the time
Get better!!!!! love ya
I (and Christina, too) crave salt…big time. Soups, stews, whatever. The saltier the better!
Are you a closet “snow bird”, Miss Auburn-alum?
Scott, I love the snow. We used to get a lot more when I was little, and I miss it!
Wheat Thins and 7-Up
April, Whenever CD is sick, all he wants are graham crackers for breakfast and Wheat Thins for lunch and dinner.
We got that same snow dusting here in GA last night too. And it closed my office for the day!
Hot chocolate soup?! Good idea, there will be hotchocolate in oatmeal soon!
Someone from CA sent me kabocha chips, those thing are like crack!! Ingriedents were kabocha, palm oil, and salt.. to die for.
Yeah, looks like 3 inches of hot air, and 1/4th inch of ice!
It is quite slick out. When I parked my truck and shut the door I had to jump back!! The truck just decided to slide about 10 feet until the tires hit the asphault!
“OK bad boy, sorry I didn’t park you where you were happy, so just adjust your bad self to how you see fit” Yeah I was talking to my truck ;-p
Jacobc, Kabocha chips?!? What was the brand name?
Hot chocolate soup sounds LOVELY! I’m sorry you are still under the weather! But I’m glad you are feeling better.
I crave green apples! And juice
Oh and jam with waffles!
<3 jess
xoxo
I totally crave carbs when I am sick! Always oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins! Great idea for adding protein to the pancakes. I need to get on trying those out!
I have got to try that choco soup, sounds amazing, ahhhhhh tahini so good on anything! When I’m sick I always grave tuna and salad cream sandwiches x x
Ha! I told HOmecookedem that she should break out her scanning electron microscope to see the snow on the ground that she posted. You can just use a regular microscope.
Glad you’re on the mend.
Q: I know I have used cream of tartar but wasn’t convinced it made my eggs any fluffier. And they certainly did nothing to add fluffiness to my pancakes the day I used it. And not to judge, but your pancakes look um, well, flat as a pancake
So I’m wondering- do you feel that they fluffed the cakes in the end?
Deb, The pancakes were so fluffy that I ended mushing them down with my spatula. They resembled green meringues when I first poured the batter onto the griddle. Cream of tartar definitely made egg whites more fluffy.
I always thought it was weird that I crave carbs when I’m sick — but clearly I am not the only one!!
For some reason, carbs (usually bagels) with butter and jelly are all I want when I’m sick. Which is weird because that’s a combination I rarely ever crave otherwise!
So sorry to hear that you are still ‘under the weather’. Hope you are feeling better soon! The hot cocoa soup looks SO yummy – I think I’ll have to give it a whirl (no pun intended…)
That soup is incredibly innovative and looks delicious! Kudos, Heather.
When I’m sick, I go for the classic healing foods and fluids. Oranges, soup, green tea, water, and toast.
Feel better lady!
well we got no snow, so our weatherman is truly a liar. he had me all hyped up and all roads covered in salt. [bad for cars...booo!]
Feel better soon!
i always crave carbs when sick, specifically graham crackers with almond milk and toast with nut butter.. weird. sprite too. those protein pancakes look so fantastic! i think i should make it a pancake weekend in the m&m household. have a great weekend, heather!
ahh those are BEAUTIFUL!! I need some green pancakes in my life asap!! thanks for the idea!! when I am sick that is all I crave too, well when I am sick and also if I am feeling nervous or stressed, I only think about peanut butter and bread! sooo I eat it
and feel much better!
I am glad you are feeling back to your normal self!!
i hope you are feeling better! Everyone seems to be sick lately!
what brand are your tortillas? they looks soft and amazing!
get well girl
Jenna, Those in the picture are the Tumaro brand, but my favorite tortillas are the La Tortilla Factor low carb high fiber.
The giveaway page is a good idea! I’ve been craving carbs a lot too…except I’m not sick. I think it’s a winter thing
Carbs are my comfort food. And since I started running again, I let myself have them. (not that I wasn’t before, but I certainly wasn’t going to cut them out now). I need to try your protein pancakes. They look fantastic and are a great idea! Maybe tomorrow, it IS Saturday, after all, and a GREAT day for pancake making
The Hot Chocolate Soup looks so easy and awesome….and for a sick girl, you have been EXTREMELY creative with your eats this week! As a random parenthood note, they say that when a child has a fever and gets ill that when they come out the other side of it, there will have been a mental growth spurt of some sort. Maybe all this sickness is making your brain just extra creative this week
When I’m sick, if I could lay down for 12 mins without my child needing me, that would be great. But it the show marches on. Food, whatever’s handy. When a parent’s sick, you suck it up and march on. It really sucks, but it’s the truth.
FEEL BETTER!!!!
xoxo
Oh I am the exact same way! Carbs all day long when I’m sick!
At least you have an excuse! I’m not sick anymore and all I want to eat is oat pancakes with almond or peanut butter, Kashi Honey Sunshine with granola and almond milk, oatmeal with pumpkin butter and walnuts, etc. etc. Agh!
When I was sick, I think I took three days off of exercise – or maybe it was two week days and a weekend. I’m not sure, but it was torture! I feel for you! But you will definitely thank yourself for laying low!
Hang in there! Eat some almond butter for me!!
Love the hot chocolate soup! Can never really trust the weatherman ?!?! HAHA
When I’m sick, I also crave carbs and nut buttah, or veggies steamed until soft. Hot chocolate soup = brilliant. Maybe the name moreso than the actual invention?!
I love how you convert practically anything into pancakes. Cream of tartar for fluffiness—I’ll try to remember that!
Oh, those pancakes. I bet they would be awesome topped with some of that hot chocolate soup, too. Will you be my chef?
I crave whatever at all times so there’s no limit
unfortunately…oh do I leave a slogan here??
How about : ” Make Cookies, Not War” or ” Get Your Squash On…!”… ” Bite My Apples!” or “Bite These Apples” ….- (is that even appropriate
)…
Sick or not it ALL looks great!
when I am sick all I want is tea. hot tea. tea tea tea
salty crackers might be good too. maybe it’s a comfort thing.
glad you are on the mend!
be well!!!!
…yeah i’m getting the cold too all in my head…but instead of being “smart” like you? …i’m ordering pizza
…”i won’t let it get to me, i won’t let it get to me” right?? it does have veggies on it…://
hope you feel better soon…
toast with butter and english muffins with butter. After 150 days straight (estimating) of almond butter in the morning, now I can’t do it all the time!
i crave carbs when i’m sick as well, so maybe it’s not abnormal
i’m glad to hear you are taking a break! everyone needs to once in awhile, it’s good for the mind and body!
♥ lindsey
I crave nut butters all the time
I especially seem to crave sweets when I’m sick though. Frozen yogurt, nut butters, chocolate mmmm.
Glad you’re starting to feel better. I always crave oatmeal when I’m sick.
Ummm your hot chocolate soup is so genius I can barely stand ittt – can’t wait to make it!
Wow–hot chocolate soup looks amazing!
I was sick last week and just wanted honey and hot water. Just what I needed for my sore throat.
Well…back when I could eat carbs, if I’d get sick I’d have a big bowl of mashed potatoes with butter. Man I miss that. Kinda weird tho, I usually crave chocolate. Anyway, everything looks yummy. Can’t wait for the giveaway tab…how fun.
Keep feeling better Heather!
I never really thought about what I crave when I’m sick, other than feeling better. I generally will have hot tea and saltines with whatever else, though, just because I know it’s “sick” food. The hot chocolate soup sounds incredible! Obviously, I need to think out of the box the next time I get sick!
What about these slogans: “Peas, love, & happiness”, “Broccoli is my fast food”, “Healthy go lucky”, or “Keep your science project out of my dinner”
Love the idea of the healthy slogan shirts; keep us updated when they debut!
Hi Heather!
I made your pancakes this morning and they’re actually pretty good! I threw in some frozen saskatoons and used the leftover spinach and although they look unappetizing, they taste like regular pancakes!
A question … how to do puree the spinach when you add it? I tried throwing it in my magic bullet but it wouldn’t do anything. I added 3 tbsp. of water and that turned it into a clump at the bottom of the blender. At this point I decided to just throw in my whipped egg whites into the blender and blend. That turned out the best, but they definitely aren’t the fluffiest pancakes. Any suggestions for the future?
Thanks for the recipe!
Kristilyn
Kristilyn,
First off, I had to Google saskatoon. Do they taste like blueberries?
I blend my batter and spinach in my Vitamix, dump it in a bowl and fold in the whipped egg whites. No problem blending the spinach in the Vita. Do you have another blender you could try – something other than the bullet? Maybe add some nut or rice milk?
Glad you enjoyed even if they weren’t the fluffiest.
so glad you like the onion bread

when i’m sick, all i want is carbs, too. except mine are in the form of brown rice tortilla chips
have a wonderful weekend and get well soon <3
When I’m sick I crave toast with nut butter, lemonade, and graham crackers.
Hey Heather – A saskatoon is similar to a blueberry, but I find them to be tastier.
Thanks for the suggestion!
K
I love the green pancakes. Fluffy yum. Veggies yum, yum!! I love your creativity in the kitchen. I’ve picked up so many great ideas since blogging. Thanks
hot chocolate soup! no way! that makes me almost want to get sick so i can enjoy its superpowers!
How did you get that Hot Chocolate Soup to look so creamy!? The spinach in protein pancakes looks like a great idea
Michelle, Vita-Mix = creamy.
Ok, I just thought of the BEST t-shirt slogan this morning in the shower.
For the ladies: “My tomatoes have a first name, it’s T-A-S-T-Y.”
For the men: “My zucchini has a first name, it’s T-A-S-T-Y.”
(J-U-I-C-Y and F-R-E-S-H also work, but tasty is best for an eating slogan.)
I would proudly clothe myself and Irish in these shirts!
Ha ha…very clever Tail!
I am all carbs and nut butter when I am sick too! I think last time I had oats for breakfast, lunch and dinner, ha ha. Hope you are feeling somewhat better!
Ah, that’s what I crave when I’m sick or not feeling myself as well- carbs all over the place!
http://www.joelygolightly.wordpress.com
I tweeted this, but you probably didn’t see it..
I crave toast and citrus when I’m sick. Usually just toast with honey though.
Love the pancakes that seem like a big plate of carbs. The reason why I love them basically. (And because they’re delicious of course.)
Bekah, I saw your tweet.
I definitely get the carb/nut butter cravings when sick. Also, I crave warm green tea. I hate to drink water when I’m sick, it just makes me feel worse. But I consider nut butters and carbs to be my “comfort foods” so I guess it makes sense that’s what I want when ill.
