Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!
Several months ago, Smoothie Girl sent me some raw cacao beans. Thanks Deb! I ♥ you.

Occasionally, I use the beans as a crunchy topping for smoothies or oats, but this weekend I wanted to experiment with some cacao recipes. So, after grinding the beans in my Vita-Mix, I had my very own raw cacao powder.

First up, I made some mint chocolate tea by steeping Trader Joe’s peppermint tea in a mug of heated almond milk and then stirred in a heaping tsp of cacao powder and a drizzle of maple syrup to sweeten. This was so warm and comforting, even before I added the cacao. Try making peppermint tea with almond or coconut milk instead of water! I think I’ve discovered a new favorite hot beverage.

Then, out of the blue, Clare sent me this recipe for coconut cacao bark. Thanks Clare – perfect timing, and I made it right away. My version wasn’t 100% raw since I used maple syrup, but still delicious. Next time I make it, I think I’ll use coconut butter rather than coconut oil and skip the sweetener altogether.

This morning, in honor of Green Smoothie Monday, I made myself a raw cacao smoothie for breakfast with 2 cups coconut water, 1 frozen banana, 2 TBSP raw cacao powder, topping it with a spoonful of unsweetened shredded coconut. Definitely not green, but still full of so much goodness. I haven’t had something this sweet for breakfast in a while, and I’m so hyper right now. I hope I don’t crash, but if I do, it was totally worth it. I LOVED this smoothie!

How about you? Would you like some raw cacao nibs or perhaps a few raw chocolate truffles? Well then, today is your lucky day. Snubbr, a new groovy website that finds the best shopping deals out there, is offering one lucky HEABer the chance to win one of their top rated raw chocolate goodies. All you have to do is click here to visit their site and leave a comment below telling me which chocolate item you would choose. I’ll leave the comments open through next Sunday, March 21, midnight CST.
Anyone else start their day with chocolate?

Well, aside from the truffles, I think I would have to go with the Navitas natural organic raw cocoa nibs. I briefly tried cocoa nibs about 4 or 5 years ago and not since! Yikes it has really been that long.
I think I’d have to go for the Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs — they look awesome!
Thanks, HEAB!
I would for sure choose the nibs.. They sound so fun and i have always loved the word nib..
I didn’t start my day with chocolate but i did just have lunch dessert and it was… “OMG That Tastes Better Than A Nobake Cookie and It Has No Sugar” oatbran with dark cocoa powder, topped with TJ almond butter and coconut butter… and.. it was dang good…
I’ve been wanting to try cacao nibs for a while now!
Lauren @ http://lifelite10.blogspot.com/
Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs without question I would choose those….the possibilities are endless with a stash of raw chocolate nibs!!!
Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs!! I’m addicted to chocolate these days.
ulimana raw truffles look divine!
Nibs are the best! Can’t have enough of them. This morning, I sprinkled them on your raw bread with coconut and stevia. It’s the perfect breakfast for an IBSser. Very light on the tum, but very energizing.
Definitely the nibs. I’ve always wanted to try them!!
I’ve always wanted to try the raw cacao nibs..I almost bought them once at Whole foodss, but they weren’t in the budget:-) cc
I would like the Askinosie Single Origin Box!!
Love nibs too but I just bought new bag of it so I am up for more of a chocolate bar today!
Yummy smoothie you made Heather! And I really like your idea of making raw cacao powder. You can mix it with coconut butter and make your own chocolate bliss now!!
And since you also like nibs, take a look at this recipe over David Lebovitz website for Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread, he uses cocoa nibs and hazelnut oil to make an spreadable concoction. I want to try it soon, that’s why I bought a bag of nibs! (and to try making my own chocolate bliss with coconut butter!
http://www.davidlebovitz.com/archives/2010/02/chocolate-hazelnut_spread.html
Ana
Thanks for the link Ana. Sounds delicious – like raw spreadable Nutella.
I think the Ulimana Raw Truffles look divine!
I would definitely go for the Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs – I’ve always wanted to try them!
i’ve never tried cacao nibs, and i would LOVE to make your sugar rush smoothie with those… although the maple chocolate bar sounds interesting – gimme anything with weirdish ingredient combos and i’ll def. try it…. so that would be my second pick
btw do you ever cook with collard greens? i just bought a huuuge bag of them and thought that if anyone would have a yummy recipe for veg it would be you. i made some up with coconut milk and red curry powder and it was SO yum, but i’d love to hear any of your crazy concoctions too!
Mallory, I love love love collard greens, but haven’t cooked with them much myself. Truth be told, I’m a Southern girl at heart and therefore, love my greens simmered with a ham hock.
I would go for the nibs. Everyone in my house would love them-especially my kids!!
They would be perfect for smoothies, oats, recipes and just to snack on. Yum!
I started with chocolate!
I tried those raw cacao nibs before…I don’t get them? what should you do with them…I thought they’d melt in hot cocoa…but they don’t -just crunchy…so I’m just doing my usual
Eatmovelove, Stuff the cacao nibs in a raw Medjool date with almond butter or add to any hot or cold cereal for a little crunch!
Oh my gosh! I almost got some of the cacao pods last week but passed up…how do they taste raw? And then grinding and making a smoothie just sounds amazing. Do you think you could grind the beans with a coffee grinder..I don’t have a Vitamix. I would definitely want to try out the Original Maple Syrup Chocolate Bars!
Christine, The cacao nibs are very bitter – like unsweetened chocolate, and yes, you could probably grind them in your coffee grinder.
Wow, I would love to cook with those raw cacao nibs! Just made your coconut butter last week, and I’d love to make up a chocolate flavored batch! Mmmm.
Ooohhh…..so hard to choose! I would definitely go with the nibs, though. I like the idea of your chocolate mint tea, but my hubby makes a mean protein smoothy with heaps of cocoa in it that would no doubt benefit from their addition
I imagine they’d made tastey mosels in homemade protein bars of even in the bark or….omg! In fudge babies!!!!
Love your blog, by the way! Since discovering it, I check it everday and even my husband wants to know what your pancake sunday is for the week – we’re partial to the almond banana pancakes from Marks Daily Apple…and now we’re going to do the McGriddle variation next
Jennifer, Thanks to both you and your hubby for reading. Perhaps I’ll try Mark’s pancakes next weekend.
mmm…. I would definitely opt for the Navitas chocolate nibs.
I would love to try the Love Street Raw Maple Crystal Chocolate Bars. They look so yummy! I bet my kiddos would love them too!
Thanks,
Jonna
definitely raw cocoa nibs. What a great giveaway! thanks. I too love chocolate for breakfast…the breakfast of champions:)
For me it would be all about the nibs..
oh my word…’scuse me while i clean up my desk from drooling over chocolate! i’ll take the Ulimana Dark Chocolate Truffles, please and thank you
As much as I love raw cacao nibs I’d have to go for the Love Street Maple Crystal chocolate bars, they sound so so YUM!
I would absolutely love to try the Raw Cacao Nibs! I’ve heard so much about them and their health benefits. Not to mention, my mother is quite the chocoholic and it would be great to replace these instead of her usual sweetened dark chocolate.
I’d love to try the ulimana raw truffles….yum!
I start my day with chocolate everyday!
Usually in the form of some chocolate chips or protein smoothies!
I’m all stocked up on nibs, so I’m going to have to say the Love Street Raw Maple Crystal Chocolate Bars. How delicious does that sound?
oooh raw truffles please!!!!
Navitas Nibs! I’m already dreaming of what I could do with those!!
So fun! Definitely Uli Mana’s truffs are my fave!
I have to go with the Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs! I put these in smoothies and savory dishes, soups and chili! They are amazing!
The maple chocolate bars sound interesting.
I would totally get the raw truffles! I always see them in the store but since I’m a broke college student i don’t want to shell out 15 bucks for them. I would love to try them!
I’d love to try the raw truffles!
Wow, homemade cocoa powder?! You and I are definitely on the same wavelength because I adore dark chocolate cocoa powder and use lots every weekend. Naturally I would love the navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs because of my chocolatey obsession. Perhaps I would then be able to try your love hot cocoa?
I love the color of your smoothie… pinkish, almost? Ah well, it’s pretty and I bet it was delicious, too.
Have a lovely day!
xox
I’d love to try the nibs! I’ll take anything dark chocolate though…
I would love to try the Ulimana raw truffles, especially when I saw that the peppermint may raise my energy, which I’ve been really needing lately!

I’m always afraid to start my day with chocolate – if I do, I don’t know if I’ll be able to control the cravings!!
The UliMana truffles look insanely delish.
Yum…chocolate for breakfast…yes please!
Raw truffles for sure– I just bought cacao nibs for the first time and I’m hooked.
Not this morning, but the last two mornings I had a chocolate (green) breakfast shake. Today’s was berry. Always with a banana of course!
I would have to go for those Love Street Chocolate Bars!
Raw truffles sound amazing!

raw trufflessss! oh yesssss
I would love to try raw truffles!!
The nibs. I almost bought them yesterday, but had already spent way too much to buy anything else. If I win, it would be those nibs I had to pass up.
I might need some nibs!
Mmmmm Gnosis truffles
Definitely Gnosis truffles!
Definitely the Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs.
I can’t find them locally and haven’t had the nerve to get a whole bag on line…
Raw truffles?! Yes please!
I love chocolate. I have a giveaway on now if u want to submit an entry.
I want the nibs. I’m a control freak, maybe, because I don’t like packages with more than one ingredient. I guess I really like “ingredients!” There’s way more opportunity for experimentation and kitchen-time that way. Though, umm, I would never turn down chocolate in any form…
I didn’t have chocolate this morning but I had coffee with sugar in it instead of my regular stevia. I’m not sure what I was thinking…it was in the house thanks to someone’s birthday cake requests and now, hours after having half a cup I’m still bouncy/funny feeling. *sigh*
I think I would want the Love Street bars!
I’d love the chocolate bars!
And that peppermint chocolate tea made with almond milk looks and sounds DIVINE!!!!
The raw truffles sound really interesting!
Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs look delish
The truffles fo shiz!!!!!

Justine

The nibs or the chocolate bars – love the fact that the bars are raw.
um, i would TOTALLY pick the maple crystal chocolate bar. it sounds incredible
oh the cocoa nibs for sure!
Uli Mana truffles!!
I make peppermint tea the same way (great minds think alike). I started doing it last winter and drank it throughout the hot summer months too!
I’d love to try either the nibs or the single origin chocolate bars. or really anything chocolate. I don’t discriminate!
Since I’ve never tried the nibs, that’s what I’d choose. And yes, yesterday I had some chocolate as a sort of post-breakfast dessert! Nothing like some good old unsweetened baking chocolate.
I would love to try raw truffles…yum!
i’d love to try the raw chocolate nibs – seems like you could add them to so many things
I would love to try the Raw Chocolate Nibs. It all looks so yummy!

Danielle, Yes, and I did. T’was yummy.
Hey, I have been reading your blog for some time, but I decided to finally enter the blogging world and start my own. I hope you don’t mind me adding you to my blog roll because your blog is awesome!
I would go for the raw peppermint truffles although I would eat anything from there! Thanks,
-Clay
I would try the Askinosie Single Origin Box
I would go for the cocoa nibs. They are great on top of whipped banana oatbran with almond butter and goji berries.
I love learning more things we have in common
I start off every day with a piece of chocolate. Recently it has been Macasure (I think that’s the name) – it has maca in it.
I got into the habit when I started taking chocolate calcium things (adora disks). Those are good but real chocolate is better.
I want to win the raw chocolate nibs.
Askinosie isn’t all-raw, but their chocolate is absolutely incredible!! It is considered local to the area where I go to school and I am obsessed with it, and apparently people all over the world (e.g., chocolate connoisseurs!) are taking notice!!
So Askinosie’s single-origin chocolates would be my first choice, but Ulimana is a brand I’ve always wanted to try so that would rank 2nd place!!! Yum I <3 chocolate. It is a food I would never give up.
I would love to try Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs!
i’d just like to keep it simple and go for the raw chocolate nibs! and i like your mug
Definitely the dark chocolate truffles. Btw, what’s your favorite green monster recipe? I paid $5 for a 16oz the other day. It was expensive, but felt real good after drinking it.
Kim, My favorite green smoothie is 1.5 cups coconut water (plain), 1 small avocado, 2 mini-cucumbers, 2 handfuls of spinach, 4 to 5 ice-cubes, cinnamon, maca, and vanilla blended and then topped with more cinnamon and either unsweetened coconut or raw macadamia nuts.
I’d go nibs for sure.
It’s so hard to choose among chocolates! If I absolutely had to, though, I’d probably go for the Askinosie Single Origin Box. The variety of darks sounds so appealing!
Okay, i MUST try your version of hot, chocolate-y mint tea!!! That sounds so simple and amazing
The coconut cacao bars look amazing! I would get the cacao nibs just for the sake of that recipe!
mmm the Uli Mana Truffles look great!!

Oh, I love cacao nibs!
When I was on Meghan Telpner’s retreat in St. Lucia, we went to a cocoa plantation — was VERY cool to see how the pod grows on the tree. And that the raw cacao beans are fermented and they do a “cocoa dance” on the beans. Check out Meghan’s video to fully understand what I’m talking about –http://meghantelpnerblog.com/2010/01/28/the-cocoa-dance/
Thanks Jennifer. You know I love Meghan.

Hi Heather!
I had such a fun time reading your cocoa-y post. Today at Whole Foods I walked by some organic nibs and although I put them in my cart and was very excited about them, ended up having to put them back as they were ~pretty~ expensive considering my student budget. I’ve never tried them and so I think that I would definitely go for the Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Chocolate Nibs!! They look wonderful.
Keep up the great writing!
