Condiment Whore

by HEAB on March 20, 2010

I was thinking of titling this post Condiment Queen, but sometimes “whore” is just fun to say…and I like to shock my parents. Hey mom. :)

Houston…we have a problem. In less than 2 weeks, my one jar collection of mustard has morphed into this…

IMG_4651.JPG

Hehe…obsessed much? Even CD is enjoying the mustard love. Our favorite thus far is the Golding Farms Honey Dijon. It’s just sweet enough. Many of you shared your favorite mustards with me, but I can’t find them here in Nashville. As much as I’d love to, I refuse to order mustard online. However, I did discover the Mustard of the Month Club…and just so ya know my birthday is on January 2nd, although I’d gladly accept gifts on Easter as well. Thanks. ;)

This is my go-to breakfast lately: Eggs In A Nest made with spinach and crumbled bacon and mustard as toppings. Lurve.

IMG_4654.JPG

Also thoroughly enjoying Maggie’s miso-tahini dressing. I think Maggie and I could eat every meal together for the rest of our lives and be two very happy girls as she is a fellow condiment AND a kabocha whore. :)

IMG_4655.JPG

How about you? Are you a sauce/dipper kind of eater, or do you prefer everything dry? One of my best friends from high-school (yes Cristy, I’m talking about you) always brought plain turkey sandwiches for lunch…just turkey and bread. I always thought that was so weird, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

OK, one client down today and one more to go. It’s so nice to be working again! Thanks for all your comments yesterday. It was interesting to read about everyone’s rules or lack there of and so good to know I’m not alone.

Remember to smile today. :)

LOL, whore sure is fun to say. Anywho…I like mustard but I rarely think to put it on anything besides sandwiches. I do get weird looks because I really like dry pancakes…mustard probably wouldn’t be too tasty on those, though.

Maggie March 20, 2010 at 8:12 am

I LOVE your mustard collection. I should really start building mine up too. I usually just stick with whatever whole foods has that is cheap.

Liesl March 20, 2010 at 8:32 am

Hey Heather!
I also LOVE mustard, it’s just so yummy on almost everything. One of my favorites, which I’m hoping you’ll be able to try, is the Garlic Aoli Mustard from Trader Joes. Since you have a store I’m hoping you have it. It is AMAZING!!
Have a great weekend!

Kim March 20, 2010 at 8:43 am

Love the WF Honey Mustard. I tend to be a condiments whore as well! You should see our fridge, scary! May is good, we can celebrate the anniversary of my 30th birthday!

hair in my coffee March 20, 2010 at 8:50 am

I am sauceyyyyyyy. But I also like to taste all the ingredients. I’m a dipper rather than a pourer, I would say.

Rachel @ Suburban Yogini March 20, 2010 at 9:00 am

I love sauces and dips myself. I can’t stand food that is too dry.

VeggieGirl March 20, 2010 at 9:03 am

Three cheers for the Whole Foods dijon mustard!! I use it too, of course. DAILY :)

Nicole @ Making Good Choices March 20, 2010 at 9:05 am

I LOVE sauces and dips, but I tend to make one at a time and then use it up and then make another. Sometimes I get stuck in a rut and keep making the same thing over and over again, which I am in now, so I need to get out of it! :)

eatmovelove March 20, 2010 at 9:06 am

Whore here…yeah I have a problem with Condiments. I can never decide which one, so it ends up being a big smorgsaborg of flavors…do you have inclinations for certain kinds/tastes with dishes?

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 20, 2010 at 9:46 am

Eatmovelove, I love most sauces from mustard to mayo. Favorite is probably pesto, but I also love a good/savory sweet combo.

Evan Thomas March 20, 2010 at 9:08 am

I guess I, with my 30+ different nut butters, can’t pass judgement on a few condiments :-)

Amy @ Second City Randomness March 20, 2010 at 9:09 am

I used to be a ranch whore. Then I realized my destructive behavior. Now we’re friends with benefits on occasion.

Instead, I focus my energy on being a nut butter and shoe whore. It works out well for everyone. We’re very happy together.

Gena March 20, 2010 at 9:13 am

Yeah, I’ve been known to enjoy salad dressing. Like, once in a blue moon ;-)

balancejoyanddelicias March 20, 2010 at 9:14 am

add me to the group! I love that tahini miso dressing and KAbocha fan forever!! :D

From Party To Hearty March 20, 2010 at 9:15 am

Is a nut butter a condiment? Then count me in! I also love salsas and hot sauces! I love the title :)

shegoesbananas March 20, 2010 at 9:26 am

The Stone Ground No Salt Added is my absolute favorite! It’s so pure and tasty! I’m totally a mustard girl. I put it on everything!

Babycakes March 20, 2010 at 9:28 am

Thanks to Liz (VG) I am now IN LOVE with the WF organic dijon, as well as the Westbrae no-salt added. My brussels sprouts have never tasted so good!

Nicole March 20, 2010 at 9:28 am

I am also a condiment whore. My mom still cringes at the things I put ketchup on. I even mix bbq sauce into my mashed potatoes and/or macaroni salad (well, mostly when I’m eating something bbq’ed like bbcq chicken or pulled pork)

I’m glad you’re back to work! YAY for not being sick anymore!!
Enjoy this beautiful day!

I LOVE condiments!

Interestingly, when I was in treatment for anorexia, my therapist told me that a passion for condiments is pretty common in disordered eaters. I don’t know — I’m healthy now, and STILL love my dressings! Especially if they contain garlic. Lots and lots of garlic… :)

missyrayn March 20, 2010 at 9:35 am

I’m a total condiment whore. I use all sorts of condiments and create my own by mixing them together.

MarathonVal March 20, 2010 at 9:42 am

I am an enormous condiment whore!! Actually until you mentioned this, I thought I was the only one. I don’t crave veggie burgers, I crave the ketchup and mustard and mayo on them… I don’t crave pasta, I crave the SAUCE on top! The more, the better!!!

Ameena March 20, 2010 at 9:48 am

I am totally a dipper…salsa, mustard, ketchup, olive oil, chutney. I have a condiment problem as well!

healthyexposures March 20, 2010 at 10:14 am

Oh, phew – I’m not the only one?! haha. I have SO many mustards. Love Raspberry-Dijon and Maine Maple Dijon the most, if I want something out of the ordinary :)
Worse than my mustard obsession, though – is definitely my jam obsession & collection. Yikes!!
I’m a total dipper. i’ll usually have some sort of mustard, jam, hummus, or homemade ranch on everything :P

Erica March 20, 2010 at 10:18 am

hahah I’m a little bit of a condiment whore myself- I like salsa, mustard and nut butter (which can sometimes be used as a condiment) oh oh and hummus! Josh eats sandwiches plain like that too- I’m like…aren’t you bored with that? Isn’t it dry? Just the way he likes it I guess!

Katherine March 20, 2010 at 10:27 am

I am so with you on the mustard loving! I find is surprising how good the generic brands can be too, but they’re often not any less expensive. I eat mustard on lettuce with vinegar as dressing or squirt some on hard boiled eggs.

Lauren @ eater not a runner March 20, 2010 at 10:33 am

I used to me the dry sandwich girl! I like condimnts a little better now but as long instill gondry every once in a while ;-)

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) March 20, 2010 at 10:49 am

I LOVE sauces, condiments, you name it! I love spicin’ up my food!

I think your condiment colony will grow even more when you see all the bounty out there.

Whore: let’s see, I’m a gym whore, condiment whore, veggie whore, protein powder whore, Torani Syrup/extract whore, on-again-off-again diet coke whore. And that must have been fun to shock the Mom, Dad and ILs :-D hee hee.

jenny March 20, 2010 at 11:03 am

Whole Foods HOney Mustard is my favorite… I love to mix it with a little Tabasco!

Christopher Ian Hill March 20, 2010 at 11:15 am

I’m not a big fan of Dijon Mustard…it taste to much like wasabi. I don’t mind wasabi on sushi.
But the Dijon doesn’t taste good on a sandwich because it taste like wasabi.

Hey, any chance you’re still considering the idea of ever moving to Manitou Springs area? Or at least visiting in the near future? :) I ate at Adam’s Mountain Cafe yesterday and thought of you. I swear I’m not a creeper!

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 20, 2010 at 11:57 am

Heather, We’re going to stay in Nashville for time being, but we love spending our summers in Colorado. However, not sure about this summer – we always wait until the last minute to plan our trip.

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 20, 2010 at 11:59 am

Heather, P.S. LOVE Adam’s Mountain Cafe! :)

Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) March 20, 2010 at 11:39 am

Mustard is probably my favorite sauce. However, while reading this, I thought of something weird about myself…I don’t like sauces (you know the heavy ones on hot food), but I love salsas, hot sauce, mustard, ketchup. I don’t know, it seems weird to me, but I really just like the lighter condiments on things.

janetha March 20, 2010 at 11:42 am

march is national sauce month. WOOHOO! i love me some saucy sauces. saucy whore for sure.

Jennifer March 20, 2010 at 12:16 pm

I like Annie’s Natural Organic Dijon Mustard. YUM! And I’m a mustard girl all the way.

Katie March 20, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I love mustard – any kind! Honey mustard is my favorite, though. I wish I could find an all natural brand that tastes exactly like McDonald’s honey mustard!

Annie (HotFlashBang) March 20, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Love love love mustard… love condiments.. uhmm.. and I know this is weird.. I just don’t love all the various size jars… it drives me nuts.. I open my fridge door and everything on the shelves is so nice.. and orderly.. and then there’s the door.. ehhh jammed with jars of mustard, and pickles, and hot sauces.. oh yes, I am addicted to multiple varieties of HOT SAUCES.. do you have any idea how many ethnic variations there are of chili?? mmmmm??? it’s amazing..

Still loving your blog!
Annie

Heather March 20, 2010 at 12:47 pm

Miso-tahini….that sounds fantastic!!! I’m definitely into the condiments, homemade if I can swing it. :)

Kelly March 20, 2010 at 1:39 pm

Seriously your title almost made me spit out my water I was laughing so hard!! I loved it…I am definitely a condiment whore too. And so is my husband so it is bad in our fridge!!! haha!! :) Happy Saturday Heather!

essica March 20, 2010 at 2:30 pm

I LOVE MUSTARD. I am so not a condiment whore, I have mustard, ketchup, some salad dressings and that’s it. But seriously, I go through a jar of mustard probably every 10-14 days and then a bottle of ketchup like once a year.

Angharad (Eating for England) March 20, 2010 at 2:43 pm

ohhhh I am definitely a condiment whore! I can’t be doing with dry food! Mayo, hummus, hot sauce, mustard, ketchup, brown sauce, basically love all of them…

Lara (Thinspired) March 20, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Let’s see…as I read this post, I am eating fake chik’n nuggets dipped in ketchup and carrots dipped in hummus. So yeah, I get around ;)

All-time favorite condiment is ketchup. It’s been a big deal for me to switch to organic because I love the HFCS-filled Heinz. Second favorite is probably BBQ sauce. Matthew is obsessed with ranch dressing…he had never had it before he met me, can you believe that?!

Katie March 20, 2010 at 2:56 pm

I seriously have a post written with this title! Complete with a photo of my current mustard stash. I cannot recommend Beaver brans Sweet Hot mustard. It is my favorite. I also ate that same thing for dinner, with some nooch added for good measure.

Obviously, I am a big sauce/dipper. FYI – roasted kabocha fries are awesome dipped in honey mustard or dijon.

Heather March 20, 2010 at 3:07 pm

hahaha…i love your shocking titles! they definitely make my day :) i love mustard, and we definitely have a little bit of every kind of condiment here at all times!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) March 20, 2010 at 3:21 pm

OMG what a post b/c after you posted about mustard a week or so ago, I have been totally grooving on some mustard-themed salads and asked my readers about condiments, too!

And I had read Adam’s (Deane’s Blog) comment to you about loving the Westbrae No Salt Added. Well I went in search of it to my WF and they are out and probably will be for quite awhile it sounded like :( and I am really sodium-sensitive so that would be a great one and I am going to keep searching for it! Good to know that you have it on your Condiment Photo stash!

And the Mustard of the Month club…genius!

Mama Pea March 20, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Want to know another fun word? Douchelord. Hi, Heather’s mom!!!

For example, “Gigi wanted to ride the pegasus on the carousel, but this douchelord middleschool kid took it from her.” Hmm…maybe that’s not appropriate, yet sadly true.

McKella March 20, 2010 at 3:44 pm

You’re right, whore is more fun. I am also a condiment whore! Everything tastes better with some dressing, mustard, CHOCOLATE, honey, etc etc etc.

Jenna @ Healthy. Happy. Well. March 20, 2010 at 4:45 pm

love it! Too funny. I love ketchup a little too much.

eatmovelove March 20, 2010 at 4:58 pm

HEAB do you watch/”care” about sodium…- just curious because of your unique styles! – as said, I’m a condiment whore…which are high in it…;) probably why i love them haha!!

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 20, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Eatmovelove, Read this post – http://heathereatsalmondbutter.com/2009/04/26/dont-forget-your-electrolytes/. I no longer fear salt. I have really low blood pressure, and the salt helps. I rarely eat packaged foods, and my diet isn’t that high in sodium. Therefore, I never worry about my condiments. :)

Mae March 20, 2010 at 5:12 pm

I want to make my own mustard!! It sounds like a fun new project. I think peach champagne mustard would be luci0us! Have you ever tried making your own?

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 20, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Mae, Nope, never tried it. That would be a fun experiment. :)

Claire March 20, 2010 at 6:58 pm

SAUCE!!!!I always have a paint palate of condiments on my plate.Mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, etc.I love variety.hehe…cc

Allie (Protein Girl) March 20, 2010 at 7:23 pm

Unbeknownst to most HEAB readers, “Heather Eats Almond Butter” was originally entitled “Heather Whores Out Almond Butter.” I also pimp my eggs with ridiculous amounts of toppings. The same goes for smoothies.

Jae March 20, 2010 at 7:32 pm

I smiled today :)

Julie @ Pickley Pear March 20, 2010 at 7:36 pm

I hear ya about the condiments! I have multiple kinds of mustard, ketchup, salad dressing and pb. Too many of each frankly, and yes, they are all open :) One thing I have never tried is miso. Crazy huh?

caronae March 20, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Haha, my family always refers to me as a massage whore, in a loving kind of way. I guess you’re a mustard whore in the same way. I’m not a huge condiment lover. I add them to the traditional things, like burgers, but I hardly ever eat those things anyways. Right now, the only “condiment” I have is salad dressing, I think. I just don’t like liquid flavors I guess; I’d rather douse my meals in spices or rich ingredients, but I don’t like there to be sauces on top. I’m such a weirdo!

Gena March 20, 2010 at 7:55 pm

OMG speaking of condiments? Made carrot tahini dressing tonight. YUM.

theprocessofhealing March 20, 2010 at 8:03 pm

I’m a total condiment whore too but in regards to nut butters. If you can call that a condiment :)
Oh.. and yogurt whore. Majorly.

ProteinGirl March 20, 2010 at 9:31 pm

If there was such a thing as the queen of condiment whores, it would without question be me. I go through about 4 things of mustard a week. My current obsession has been and will be SALSA (I’m talking 2L jugs-2 a week), low sodium soy sauce and mustard. Natural Value and Life Source make killer whole grain mustards. Some have apple cider vinegar, which gives it a slightly robust sweet flavor. I have tried so many, and by far these 2 blow me away everytime!!!

fitandfortysomething March 20, 2010 at 9:32 pm

I am not big on mustard but I love hummus and organic ketchup on just about anything! :)

Kristie March 20, 2010 at 9:36 pm

You win for biggest condiment whore (totally a compliment :) ) but I’m definitely up there. I LOVE my condiments and I LOVE my mustard. At any given time there are at least 2-3 open in my fridge, though if there were space in the door shelves it would be much more. And I just MIGHT have to sign up for that mustard of the month club one of these days… pure genius.

Gabriela (froyolover) March 20, 2010 at 10:45 pm

Holy MUSTARD!
;D
Have a terrific Sunday, girl!

Christina@Health-Foodie March 20, 2010 at 11:27 pm

So funny, I just called myself a spice whore today. What a coincidence! haha

I love sauces, dips and spreads. I think a great sauce can really take a dish to the next level!

Jenn (www.j3nn.net) March 21, 2010 at 12:02 am

I love that no salt added mustard! I buy 2 or 3 bottles at a time lol.

Jenn

CaSaundra March 21, 2010 at 8:36 am

You are too funny Heather–glad you and CD are enjoying the mustards!

Adam March 21, 2010 at 11:30 am

Glad you were able to find the Westbrae Sodium-Free! :) I knew it was available in MI, and any Whole Foods in Colorado but i wasn’t sure about any other state otherwise. Westbrae is actually out of Colorado too which is a plus :)

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 21, 2010 at 11:37 am

Yes Adam, I found it. Thanks for the recommendation – it’s great!

gina (fitnessista) March 21, 2010 at 4:24 pm

i love that you put “whore” in your blog title. awesome :) i was going to put “balls” in one of mine, but my nana reads the blog
hope you had a wonderful weekend!
xoxo

yogiclarebear March 21, 2010 at 9:03 pm

hi heather! what say you about those squat little mustard containers? some of them are the WORST to squeeze and get stuff out of! and you get like halfway through the container and it won’t come out anymore and you have to ooze it into a bowl or something so you dont waste it all. argh!

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 22, 2010 at 9:15 am

Clarebear, I know! I get as much as I can, and then I add a bit of apple cider vinegar to the last little bit and shake shake shake…might add honey as well, and presto, instant salad dressing and a great way to clean out the jar. :)

Marissa March 22, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Oh yes. i am a HUGE hot sauce fan. huge…and I also like to put hummus on anything that will hold still. I also use spices as often as possible. I feel like my food is naked (and not the good kind of naked) without spices or a condiment.

BroccoliHut March 22, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Haha, no shame in a little mustard lovin’. Have you ever tried the whole grain kind?

Heather Eats Almond Butter March 22, 2010 at 4:35 pm

BroccoliHut, Yes, love whole grain mustard!!!

Successfully Slim March 23, 2010 at 4:21 am

I get the mustard thing – mustard is not mustard is not mustard!

Hey you could even go so far as to say you’re a “Hoarding Whore”

I lovveeeee condiments; honestly my fridge is chock full of them! A meal simply just isn’t the same without condiments so I completely agree…I’m a mustard and condiment conniseur!
Great pics of your eats…love the egg nest dish and the kale with tahini dressing…so yummy, Heather!
