iHerbed & Now It's Your Turn

by HEAB on April 19, 2010

Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!

Ever heard of the website iHerb, an online company that is a reseller, carrying close to 18,000 natural products? iHerb was kind enough to give me a $50 shopping spree, and they’d like to offer the same to one of you. Pretty cool, no?

I must say I was overwhelmed by iHerb’s huge selection, but here is what I ended up ordering…

IMG_4800.JPG

Kind of a random assortment of goodies, but definitely some good buys. For some reason, I keep trying hemp protein products as I know hemp is a wonderful source of so many nutrients. I haven’t had much luck with hemp protein powder, but I do like hemp seeds and was excited to try these Nutiva Hemp Chocolate Organic bars. I busted into one earlier this morning.

IMG_4811.JPG

Not to sweet and very crunchy with a “seedy” taste. I thought it was delicious. CD thought it was nasty. Yay, more for me. :)

I also ordered some soy lecithin to use in my homemade nut milks and coconut milk kefir. The lecithin acts as an emulsifier and makes for a very smooth and creamy beverage. Although I am soy intolerant, soy lecithin doesn’t seem to bother me as it doesn’t contain any soy protein.

The other items rounding out my order were all beauty products. I am not a product girl, and buy most of what I need either at Target or Whole Foods. I tend to spend a lot of money on food, but I rarely buy make-up, shoes, clothes, purses, etc. In fact, I have a rule when it comes to purses – if I can’t throw it in the washer, then I don’t need to be carrying it. :)

Anyway, I’ve been wanting to try cocoa butter as a skin moisturizer for a while. A few years ago, I used coconut oil everyday after my shower, but it started staining my clothes. I’m hoping the same won’t be true with cocoa butter. It smells wonderful, like a big tub of chocolate. However, like coconut oil, it’s solid at room temp and kind of hard to dig into. So, when I shower, I let it sit in a sink full of hot water, and by the time I’m ready to use it, it’s liquified. My skin feels so soft. I love it.

As far as the hair products go, I have naturally wavy hair, and honestly have no idea how to tame it. My basic routine is to rub in some leave-in conditioner, comb it through, and then use some type of styling product to scrunch. I’ve been using Giovanni’s Leave-In conditioner ever since Averie recommended it to me (Thanks A!). It leaves my hair soft and never weighs it down. Plus, it doesn’t have a strong smell as I’m not big on smelling like a walking hair salon. The conditioner costs $7.99 at Whole Foods and only $5.17 at iHerb. Score! And last, but not least, I chose some Kiss My Face styling gel and tried it for the first time this morning. The grapefruit scent is lovely, not too overpowering, and I love that my hair looks wavy but not crunchy – definitely a product I will be purchasing again. This is me about 5 minutes ago…

IMG_4818.JPG

Thanks again iHerb. Your products and service receive two big thumbs up from me. My order was shipped only a few hours after I placed it and arrived a few days later (shipping is free on orders over $40.00). So, would you like to win a $50 shopping spree of your very own? Well, it’s easy. All you have to do is leave a comment below telling me what you would purchase from iHerb. The giveaway is open to US and international residents. The winner will need to register to the iHerb website, and the company will take care of sending your products for free. However, international winners are are responsible for any customs fees, duties and taxes. Have fun shopping! :)

Oh, and to those of you following Recovering Ramona , Kristin released chapter 5 over the weekend. Enjoy!

Ashley L April 19, 2010 at 12:01 pm

I love Giovanni products. It’s the only line to touch my scalp!

I’d by the guar (sp?) gum to compliment the xanthum (sp?) gum Deb sent me. I need more fluffy in my life.

Jen April 19, 2010 at 12:02 pm

I am a huge fan of iHerb! I just stocked up on Carlson’s Fish Oil and saved $20+/bottle (compared to WF and pretty much every other location I’ve searched). I, also, received my shipment super fast and will definitely order from them again!

So, if I won a $50 shopping spree…I would buy two more bottles of Carlson’s Fish Oil! :)

andrea kotarski April 19, 2010 at 12:04 pm

very cool!
except the soy lecithin.
been reading on its estrogen effects from my naturopath.

Melissa April 19, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Beautiful!

Jules April 19, 2010 at 12:09 pm

I would most definitely order Amazing Grass “green” products – I’ve been dying to try them!!

Gaby April 19, 2010 at 12:12 pm

You look beautiful! My hair has a mind of its own, some days I get shirley temple style curls, other days its wavy so I never know how I should be styling it until it’s dry and too late to mess with it.
So many things to try from iherb! I think I’d get chia seeds just because they cost so much at the store. Some sort of bars but I don’t know what kind, maybe greens plus wild berry? or I like the seediness in your picture, but I’d get flax and raisin. And I’ve been wanting to try some of their natural hormone balancing remedies but I’d need to do my research before of course.

Claire April 19, 2010 at 12:14 pm

iherb is fantastic!I would definitely load up on my liquid stevia and chia seed:-)cc

rachel April 19, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Erin April 19, 2010 at 12:17 pm

I’d purchase some new multi-vitamins if I won the give away. I’m in need of finding some new good vitamins. I’m all out.

Kim April 19, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I’d buy some of those hemp protein bars — they look and sound great! I’d also probably buy some fish oil and, if there was any money left over, I’d probably pick a lip gloss and hand moisturizer.

Thanks, HEAB, for introducing me to a new store!

Maria April 19, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Oh I love iherb.com! I order all my protein/green powders, vitamins, and beauty products. I need to restock my protein powder supply (life basics), nunatural stevia, ginger supps (for motion sickness), and aubrey organics conditioner. Fast shipping, cheap prices, and lots of stuff to buy. I swear I don’t work for them ;)

Lorie April 19, 2010 at 12:26 pm

I would definitely get some nutritional yeast–I’ve been wanting to try it for months! And probably also some hemp protein powder. It would be really hard to choose though–so many fun and healthy products!!

Hi Heather! Thanks for all your cheery posts–you’re a joy to read!
iHerb looks like such an incredible site. If I won, I’d definitely buy some Amazing Grass Green Superfood powder. I’m a lover of green shakes, but can’t find this anywhere in my area! I’d also order a big package of Peanut Butter Cookie Luna bars – my favorite – and some coconut oil for all of my assorted roasting/spreading/sauteing needs.

WendyF April 19, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Oh boy ! I’d pick up some cacoa nibs…hear so much of them. Some Amazing Grass would also be up high on my list order !

Kimberly April 19, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Hey Heather :)
I have never heard of iHerb! I would love to try the soy lecithin for homemade coconut milk kefir! The hemp bars look good too. I have had that brand of bar before, but never the chocolate.
XOXO
Kimberly

Sandra April 19, 2010 at 12:40 pm

We have the same hair. I have yet to tame mine so I just stick it in ponytails.
I thinkni would try some of that leave in conditioner and get protien powder that my daughter and I both like. Also yummy good for you snack bars for my kiddo when we are out and about.

Anna (twelve22) April 19, 2010 at 12:40 pm

I always need more protein powder, and I think a ‘shopping spree’ would be a great opportunity to try some items I’ve seen around but haven’t sampled myself — chia seeds, coconut butter, etc.

Brandi April 19, 2010 at 12:41 pm

a chance to go shopping? Fun! :)

I’d love to get some cocoa nibs, cacao powder, and some fun flours to try baking with! maybe some fun face/hair stuff ;)

PS – if you want some non-soy lecithin, Blue Mountain Organics makes a Sunflower Lecithin! I have some and am planning on trying out some recipes with it.

Mia April 19, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I’d definitely go for some raw cashews and pumpkin seeds. And cacao nibs, they are so addictive!

The man at the local post office probably knows me by now as I have to go pick up my package at least once every month. He’s probs wondering what I keep getting so frequently from the States :D iHerb is like air to me (no exaggeration here ;) ), I couldn’t live without it anymore. Raw nuts and seeds (if you can even find them) are so expensive here in Finland that it really pays off to be ordering them from iHerb.

mama April 19, 2010 at 1:01 pm

i would love to try some new things; chia seeds, maca powder, maybe a new protein powder!

Rebecca April 19, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Heather April 19, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Heather, these are the best hemp bars ever! They are all natural, delicious and don’t taste to “hemp-y”. Unfortunately, they might only be available in Canada but it’s worth a look: http://www.ruthshempfoods.com/hempbars.html

My favourites are peanut butter banana and mocha!

I’ve really enjoyed looking through your blog, finding new recipes to try (hello frozen cherries, chocolate slivers, and whatever kind of milk that was!). On a less exciting note, I have a question on the topic of soy intolerance: , What made you know that you had a soy intolerance? I sense that I might have a soy intolerance as well so I am curious.

And oh the things I would do to have naturally wavy hair…

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 19, 2010 at 2:35 pm

Jennifer, Back in my vegetarian days, I used to eat soy all the time and would have horrible gas all day long. I just blamed it on my large veggie consumption and took Beano everyday. Then, one night, I ate an entire block of baked tofu, and spent the next 3 days bent over in pain – literally, and my stomach would not stop gurgling. It was misery, and I did not touch anything soy related for about 3 years. I tried eating tofu again last year, and I had the same problem. So, I try and stay away from tofu, soy milk, and anything containing soy protein isolate. Occasionally, I’ll have some cereal or a bar containing it, and again, it’s not pretty. However, I seem to do fine with fermented soy products like miso and tempeh. Apparently, the fermentation process causes the proteins to be more easily digestible.

plamarie April 19, 2010 at 2:00 pm

What an overwhelming site. I would get the Now Foods jojoba oil, probiotics, chia seeds (still haven’t tried those things, gal!)lavender and peppermint essential oil. Wait and some leave in conditioner. Too much fun stuff ;)

Jillian April 19, 2010 at 2:25 pm

I would die to be “iherbed”!!! :) Just last night at my friend Jill’s house I sampled her ‘Kiss my face’ laverder lotion and about fell in love! I’d definitely order that, and…also been wanting to try the Amazing Grass bars! Hugs to my HEAB…hope you are well my dear.

bliss April 19, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Kristina April 19, 2010 at 2:42 pm

I’d love to get my hands on some more coconut oil! :)

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heathee April 19, 2010 at 2:44 pm

They have so many face products I’d love to try. I’m like you, always spending more money on food. It would be nice to pamper myself sometime too.

Erika (Dr. TriRunner) April 19, 2010 at 2:49 pm

protein powders!! iherb has a good selection, and when fending for myself I often go with cheep, but not necessarily tasty!

Tara Rison April 19, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Feeding three hungry kiddos leaves little money leftover for beauty products. Therefore, I would totally splurge on some things I can’t usually afford.

Keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed!

By the way ~ I would kill for natural waves like yours!

Lara (Thinspired) April 19, 2010 at 2:50 pm

You look radiant, Heabie!

I want to iHerb! My first purchase would be the Bob’s Red Mill Coconut Flour! After seeing you make your chocolate chip pancakes, I want to make them too :)

Jenny April 19, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Tyrah April 19, 2010 at 2:53 pm

I’d get Vitamin Code vitamins and hemp seeds.
I’m with you on the purse and products view, I’d much rather buy great food than clothes etc. people just have to see me wearing the same things over and over…with the same purse ;) oh, and goji berries if they have them, I didn’t look for those.

sals April 19, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Kim April 19, 2010 at 3:01 pm

Ooooh, I’d order plenty o’ cherry pie Larabars, some probiotics for me and my dogs, plus some flaxseed oil, too. I’m a total Kiss My Face fan, so I’d stock up on their olive oil soaps, and any of their Peaceful Patchouli scented stuff, as I stalk it relentlessly in my local co-op and Whole Foods Market. Protein powder to experiment with smoothies – I make smoothies, but don’t usually add protein beyond soy milk/yogurt/almond butter.

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 19, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Kristen April 19, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Well, there are quite a few products I would want from iHerb.
I am currently revamping my diet, with you Heather, as my inspiration!
I am trying to not be so afraid of healthy natural fats. I spent all of Lent as a vegan, and only GAINED weight. So, maybe that was the wrong path for me.

Anyway- I would attempt to get some of the following items:
Now Foods Cocoa Butter (like you, I LOVE the smell, and coconut oil leaves me so… oily. LoL)
Derma E Itch Relief Lotion (darn you oily, yet dry, skin!)
Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar (makes a fantastic dressing!)
Nutiva Coconut Oil (I love to cook with it, and it’s darn near impossible to find it where I am)
Barlean’s Essential Women (because who wants high cholesterol?)

There are a few more items I might consider if I had money left over, but I think what I have is a fantastic start!

lola April 19, 2010 at 3:38 pm

i would get some bob’s redmill cereals. love them!

Jennifer April 19, 2010 at 3:47 pm

If I won I would order a bulk bag of Chia seeds and some hemp protein powder!

Meg April 19, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Umm…everything please?!? Ok, ok fine, I wanna try some coconutty stuff – maybe oil? Butter?!

melissa April 19, 2010 at 3:49 pm

I love ordering things that you can’t get easily at whole foods, etc…like unique nutritional bars so I could try to recreate them at home and I like to splurge on items for my skin like…anything from the Mychelle line…everything is AMAZING!

Katie April 19, 2010 at 3:54 pm

I’d get some body products too. I hate spending money on that stuff, so this would be perfect! I love Avalon products, and you’ve convinced me to try that styling gel…beautiful hair.

dani April 19, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I would love to try some nutritional yeast, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and coconut butter. All things good for me, yet out of my budget.

sarah April 19, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Jessica Zara April 19, 2010 at 4:23 pm

I think the question is what WOULDN’T I buy! Being from the UK, there are just too many goodies that we can’t get over here. If I absolutely had to choose then I’d go for bars all the way, I think…or some exotic protein powders ;) Those Nutiva bars look divine (I adore their chocolate hemp shake) and I can’t say ‘no’ to enticing things like ProBar Fruition Bars and Clif Mojos…I’m so excited that this is open to international readers :D

Thanks so much for hosting this giveaway.

~Jess~

Veggiesmack April 19, 2010 at 4:33 pm

I think I’m like you, Heather. I’d rather go grocery shopping than clothes or purse shopping. I buy maybe 1 purse per year.

There’s so much to choose from on iHerb–I think I would stock up on Larabars and pick up some green tea supplements. All the green tea supplements I find locally here have hoodia, which kind of freaks me out.

Kellie@obsessivelyhealthy April 19, 2010 at 4:40 pm

Protein Poweder for sure. I really want to try some, but it always seems so expensive. That is definately one of the things I would use the gift certficate for.

fartygirl April 19, 2010 at 4:58 pm

Giovanni’s products are the best! I love their tea tree shampoo and conditioner. I use their frizzy hair stuff too.

Exciting giveaway. Fingers are crossed.

eatmovelove April 19, 2010 at 7:54 pm

I just wanted to say to Lindsay that I tried one of those Vega bars before….interesting…very “Grainy”??….uh, yeah…not sure if that was the Hemp people were talking about , but I can see why it’s been compared to a “dirt-like consistency”!! :0 – don’t know what other’s experiences were….
and wait, what – they have Kashi products too??!!

Heather Eats Almond Butter April 20, 2010 at 7:47 am

Eatmovelove, I’ve tried the Vega bars too. Blech – dirt!

Erica H. April 19, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Love the hair! And I haven’t had those chocolate Nutiva bars in years and they are awesome – darn, craving!

So, I would probably get some of those bars, but I would definitely get some Shikai leave-in spray conditioner. Unlike you I have naturally extremely straight hair (not a kink) that is baby fine and tangles like mad. Shikai is the only natural detangler I have found that works and it smells nice too :)

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) April 19, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Oh I would love a shot at $50! I love iherb.com!!!
And I am sooo glad you picked up the GioVanni hair leave-in conditioner and you’re liking it…and at 30% off of WF’s prices, love that too :)

And the Nutiva and hemp situation. I dont like hemp protein powder at all! either!! But I like hemp seeds.. I should try those bars.

Thanks for the mention and I want to mention how gorgeous you look. I think Pantene (I mean Giovanni) is going to be calling you to hair model for them!

Alicia April 19, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Such a generous giveaway! I would love to get my hands on some chia seeds and coconut butter and coconut flour and something grainy – your blog inspires me to try new things!! Some clean smelling lotion would be great too! My list grows by the second.

Thank you!

thedailyoatmeal April 19, 2010 at 8:28 pm

I would go for some coconut based edibles, stevia drops, and Bobs Red Mill products — these are things I regularly use. Then I’d go nuts and try something new by throwing a dart and seeing where it lands.

Zeus' Mom April 19, 2010 at 8:30 pm

Nicole April 19, 2010 at 8:39 pm

yogiclarebear April 19, 2010 at 9:26 pm

What a great giveaway Heather, thanks. I have no idea how I’ve not heard of iHerb! So glad you blogged on it. I would purchase some vitamin D3 from Source Naturals and Dream Quest Nutraceuticals, Adult’s Warm Milk Chewables that I take. Both are way cheaper on this site than where I buy!

Brynne April 19, 2010 at 9:30 pm

Definitely some Amazing Grass and nutritional yeast!

Michelle April 19, 2010 at 9:36 pm

- Amazing Grass Green Superfood
- Tom’s Toothpaste

Vivian April 19, 2010 at 10:16 pm

I would probably be getting some hemp protein powder — I’ve been using whey, but a friend recommanded hemp, so that’d be something to try since it’d normally be too expensive for me. I’d also get some vitamin d supplements as well as some natural hair care products!

Madeline April 19, 2010 at 10:17 pm

I have just started using some natural skin care products, and have seen a huge difference in my skin. I would use an iHerb gift card for more skin care products, and some yummy treats!

Maija April 19, 2010 at 10:18 pm

Kendall April 20, 2010 at 12:35 am

Wow, this would be a great! I’d probably buy some golden berries as I’ve never tried them, and some maca as I’ve never used it either. Maybe some chia seeds too as I’m almost out!

I’ve had great success with the Giovanni products, I think theirs are some of the most effective natural hair products out there, at least as far as conditioner goes. I’ve tried many brands which often leave my hair as if I never conditioned at all- but theirs works! Especially since I’m the wash and go type. Sometimes I think I need to make better friends with the blow dryer but it just takes too long!

Jessie April 20, 2010 at 12:48 am

Mmmmm… protein powder would be a first priority! I’d also love some coconut oil for cooking.

Danielle April 20, 2010 at 12:49 am

Claudine April 20, 2010 at 1:28 am

i am a very big fan of yours heather, i love all the different and new ingredients/products you try out and i would love to try them. You’ve already got me hooked on Chia seeds! Living in Hong Kong though, it is quite difficult to find all the stuff you mention, and since iherb delivers internationally, i would love to take advantage and order maca, different protein powders (since all i can really get here is whey), coconut oil (been dying to try this one out for ages now!) and some natural hair products. I could go on and on, but those are the items at the top of my list!

Jonelle April 20, 2010 at 1:48 am

Awesome! I would get some chia seeds, and the Nordic Naturals kids chewy vitamins- my kids love them! I go through coconut oil like nobody’s business so that would be on there too. Heather, I am just curious in your picture (radiant-btw) your bulletin board intrigues me! What is on it?

Jonelle April 20, 2010 at 1:49 am
