Electrolux #splits: A Vegan Breakfast Banana Split

by HEAB on July 15, 2010

Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!

Foodbuzz, a sponsor of HEAB, helped Electrolux and Kelly Ripa raise money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) by sending two Foodbuzz Featured Publishers to New York and giving them an opportunity to make banana splits with their kids, and now they’ve asked all food bloggers to join in the cause.

To help spread the word and raise money for the OCRF, Foodbuzz is sponsoring a posting challenge for all their featured food bloggers to construct a post around a theme. The theme? The Ultimate Banana Split! For every banana split posted, Foodbuzz will donate $50 to the cause. Well Foodbuzz, I accept your challenge, and present you with my HEABified Vegan Breakfast Banana Split.

IMG_5419.JPG

My banana split consisted of 1 banana, 3 small scoops of old fashioned oats prepared with dark cocoa powder, 3 small scoops of vanilla protein ice-cream, a drizzle of Maranatha’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Spread (Oops, just discovered this is not vegan – sorry!) macadamia nut whipped cream (raw macadamia nuts blended with water, vanilla, and maple syrup), and a frozen cherry on top. Nothing like a delicious breakfast for a good cause. :)

To help raise money for the OCRF please click here.

Don’t forget, you have until tomorrow, Friday, July 16, to enter my online personal training giveaway.

Marilou @ Mostly Healthy July 15, 2010 at 7:22 am

Love it!!!!!! I also wanted to do some kind of oatmeal banana split creation, but eehh did not happen :)

Jessica @ How Sweet July 15, 2010 at 7:22 am

I’ve seen a few of the splits, and this one definitely takes the cake so far!

Sarah (See Sarah Eat/River City Fitness) July 15, 2010 at 7:28 am

Wow, that looks good! And it’s vegan, yay :)

Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) July 15, 2010 at 7:28 am

Perfect! YUM! My favorite banana split I have made is the one I made with oatgurt and cashew butter! That was pure heaven!

caronae July 15, 2010 at 7:33 am

I love this breakfast! You’re so good at HEABifying things. Probably because you’re HEAB. :) I never would have thought of oatmeal over a a banana, and the macadamia nut whipped cream sounds wonderful. I would love to make my own, but I’m not a member of foodbuzz. I always thought my blog would not “count” since it is about lots of other things besides food. What do you think?

Heather Eats Almond Butter July 15, 2010 at 7:35 am

Caronae, If you even mention food, I think you’re Foodbuzz worthy. :)

allison July 15, 2010 at 7:40 am

omg heather, you have outdone yourself! seriously. waiting for my guar gum to arrive!!

A Teenage Gourmet July 15, 2010 at 7:43 am

Yum! I tried making a non-dairy whipped cream with cashews, that works too! I’ll have a split up later today. :D

Heather Eats Almond Butter July 15, 2010 at 7:45 am

Teenage Gourmet, I love cashew cream…and it’s much cheaper to make than the macadamia nut version! ;)

rebecca lustig July 15, 2010 at 7:44 am

Well, I’m glad you actually read your e-mails carefully because I def. saw that and glazed over it. I would be more than happy to eat a banana split to raise money for a good cause!

Stef July 15, 2010 at 9:36 am

Hey,
that banana split sound delicious.
Do you have a recipe page for the macadamia nut whipped cream. i think that sounds intriguing but cannot fathom how it will becoem like whipped cream?
I also send an email to lindsey yesterday to enter the giveaway but got the mail back saying the domain didn’t exist? Maybe I tipped something wrong. This time I copied and pasted hopefully it will work this time around!

Heather Eats Almond Butter July 15, 2010 at 1:23 pm

Stef, Nope, but just follow the recipe for the cashew cream in this post, and sub macadamia nuts: http://heathereatsalmondbutter.com/2009/04/20/i-promise-i-do-eat-solid-foodssometimes/, and please let me know if your email to Lindsey did not go through.

Frugal 'n' Fit! July 15, 2010 at 9:36 am

Banana splits + pregnancy + summertime heat = match made in foodie heaven :)

Tina July 15, 2010 at 11:49 am

That is such a great way to raise money for research. And I admit I enjoyed reading your concoction as well. :)

And I just started a Twitter account today, so I was sure to start following you. :) Also, do you happen to know of any good Prenatal yoga DVDs? It’s been hard for me to do the regular class my gym offers.

Heather Eats Almond Butter July 15, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Tina, I love the prenatal yoga classes at http://www.yogadownload.com, and once you download them, they are yours to keep forever. I also just recently tried the Shiva Rea prenatal yoga DVD from Netflix: http://www.gaiam.com/product/id/1012884.do?SID=WG092SPRTAPEMACS&GCID=S18376x028&keyword=%22shiva%20rea%20prenatal%20yoga%22 It was good, but I think the yogadownload ones better. Oh, and welcome to Twitter! :)

Justine July 15, 2010 at 12:53 pm

The macadamia whipped cream is such a fantastic idea! I might have to put some on the HEAB butternut pudding I’m making this weekend! :)

kaztronomic July 15, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I have some macadamia nuts sitting around; I definitely want to try to recreate this whipped cream and make a banana split of my own. I LOVE your version of it! The thought of starting my day with “dessert” makes me absurdly happy. :D

Ana July 15, 2010 at 1:12 pm

What a great idea for a banana split, I have to show this to Matheus, he is going to flip for it, he loves bananas and ice cream!

HEAB that looks delish! just a quick fyi- i think there might milk in the maranatha pb/choc spread for anyone super concerned about veganism. So tasty either way!

Heather Eats Almond Butter July 15, 2010 at 5:46 pm

Thanks Carol – just checked out the ingredients. You’re right!

YUM! This looks fantastic! I can’t wait to create mine! :)

saltytooth July 16, 2010 at 7:51 am

Yum, this looks great.

When I was little and we would go of for ice cream I would always order a banana split, because it was the biggest thing my parents would allow me to get. I didn’t even really like them, but I was such a greedy kid!

http://tanyasdaily.blogspot.com/ July 16, 2010 at 8:47 am

Wow, I like that idea a healthy sweet breakfast!

Michele July 16, 2010 at 10:07 am

Wow! That looks so good.

Penny Knight July 16, 2010 at 10:10 pm

MMMM Heather, I Tried a banana split this morning and fell in love. I mixed stawberry jam into my oatmeal and forgot to put the stevia in my Protein Icecream (mistake I will rectify in the future). It was soooo good and I think my grandma was even a little jealous of my dessert for Breakfast:) Though I was disappointed that it worked so well in my blender, I was looking for another reason why we NEEDED to get a Vita Mix.

Heather Eats Almond Butter July 17, 2010 at 10:33 am

Penny, Love the idea of strawberry jam in your oatmeal, and that’s so funny about the blender. You could always try blending dried mangoes with no liquid…that little stunt managed to burn out the motor of my Vita-Mix, and so I’m sure it would do some damage to yours. Then you’d really have an excuse to order a Vita. Just don’t tell your family members it’s my fault. ;)
