There’s A New Oat In Town

Meet Coach’s Oats

bag-coach-oats-tn.jpg

I’d heard of Coach’s Oats, but the company’s products are not available in Nashville. So, they kindly offered to send me some sample packets of oatmeal. I would describe their product as a cross between steel cut and rolled oats. According to the information I received with my samples, they toast the their groats to bring the natural sugars to the surface of the oat, and then crack them into small pieces. This patented Cracked n’ Toastedâ„¢ process means that Coach’s Oats are never mushy, always naturally delicious and cook in just 3 to 5 minutes on a stovetop or in the microwave.

From left to right: steel cut oats, rolled oats, and Coach’s Cracked n’ Toasted oats.

I actually prefer rolled oats to steel cut oats. Steel cut oats are nice and chewy, but they never satiate me like rolled oats do…of course, oat bran is my absolute fav and the most filling in my opinion, but all that being said, I’m always excited to try a new kind of oatmeal as I’ve never met an oat I didn’t like.

IMG_7115.JPG

I prepared 2 servings of the Coach’s Oats with water and topped my bowl with coconut cream and hot pepper raspberry preserves. The oats cooked up so fast compared to the steel cut variety, but still had a similar texture. They were really good, but I actually prefer my thick and mushy rolled oats. So, if you’re not a fan of mushy hot cereal (& I know you’re out there), I encourage you to give Coach’s Oats a try. Also, for those of you who love steel cut oats, but hate the time it takes to cook them, I think you would love this oatmeal! You can order individual sample packets online, and the shipping is free.

Have you tried Coach’s Oats…but more importantly, have you tried Sarena’s coconut cream yet? ;)

I haven’t tried either yet, the horror!!! I too prefer rolled oats over stell cut. I just like the texture a little better:) And I’ve never tried oat bran???

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 4:09 am

Ashley,
You must try your oats in bran form. Please? Do it for HEAB. :)

Hannah January 27, 2011 at 11:31 pm

As an Australia, I haven’t and probably never will get to try those cracked oats, but I can stick with my beloved oatbran and give the coconut cream a try! And that’s enough to make me happy :)

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 4:08 am

Hannah,
Yep, oat bran and coconut cream is all you need. :)

Coco @ Opera Girl Cooks January 27, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Hmm, these sound good to me! And I haven’t tried the coconut cream, either. Looks like I’ve got some catching up to do on the breakfast front . . .

Valerie @ City|Life|Eats January 27, 2011 at 11:38 pm

I am obsessed with Sarena’s coconut cream. Obsessed. Tonight I made some with raw cacao, agave, coconut flour and almond milk and it was awesome. Like chocolate pudding crossed with thick whipped cream. Awesomeness. I need to look into whether Coach oats are gluten-free. I have been doing well with Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free rolled oats, but like you I like different types of oatmeal.

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 4:07 am

Val,
Me too. Trying to pace myself on that stuff since coconut flour is so pricey. I could eat Sarena’s cream on everything!

Heather January 27, 2011 at 11:41 pm

Wow, I can’t believe they cook that fast! I like a bowl of steel cut oats every now and then, but I definitely prefer mushy creamy oats! I usually do a combo of oats, oat bran, and flax that I got from Ashley’s blog. It’s my favorite mix!

Runeatrepeat January 27, 2011 at 11:42 pm

They have Coach’s Oats at Costco around here so I can get a lifetime supply :)
And I know this is sacrilegious, but I don’t like coconut…

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 4:06 am

Monica,
Really? At Costco? I need to request that my Costco start carrying them.

No worries on the coconut – you’re not alone. It’s not for everyone….just means more coconut cream for me. ;)

Kate (What Kate is Cooking) January 27, 2011 at 11:44 pm

I’ve never had oatmeal I didn’t like, so I would definitely try these!

Christin@purplebirdblog January 27, 2011 at 11:45 pm

I’m with you… I preferred rolled oats to steel cut… and I prefer oat bran the most of all! I also prefer the normal quinoa to the red… for the same mush factor ;)

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 4:04 am

Christin,
I’ve never tried red quinoa – good to know it’s not as mushy. Think I’ll stick with the normal stuff too. :)

Katy (The Singing Runner) January 28, 2011 at 12:06 am

I have never had Coach’s Oats but I have heard of them. I haven’t seen them on the shelves around here either!

Maryann January 28, 2011 at 12:19 am

I would be so interested to try those! I agree that steel cut oats dont fill me up. Lately I have been mixing 1/4 cup rolled oats and 1/4 cup oat bran and it works great!

Mandiee January 28, 2011 at 12:29 am

Yum! I love steal-cut and rolled respectively. However, Scottish oats did steal my heart for a while. What can I say, I just love them all (especially oat groat bread a la you)! Thanks for the link to Sarena’s coconut cream. My coconut flour expires in March so I’ve got some coconut using to do. I can’t say that I won’t enjoy that…

Have a lovely day!

Namaste Gurl January 28, 2011 at 1:06 am

How fun, it’s always wonderful to find new varieties of oats and grains. I’ve just been grinding steel cut oats recently and making scottish oats, as the cooking time is reduced by doing so and results are creamy texture, just as I like it :)

In fact, I just had me a bowl of scottish oats- best bedtime snack!

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 4:01 am

Namaste,
I’ve been meaning to try Scottish oats. Thanks for the reminder!

The Dainty Pig January 28, 2011 at 3:18 am

I am officially hooked on that coconut cream. Seriously to die for. And so easy to make :) Love it!

I too have never met an oat I didn’t like. When I get back to Canada I can’t wait to try Coach’s oats!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) January 28, 2011 at 5:29 am

I actually HAVE tried Coach’s Oats before (I won a sample of some in a give away ages ago) and yes, they are tasty!

I prefer rolled to steel cut oats, too. I always have rolled oats on hand. They are my go-to oats for when I make recipes w/ oats IN them, i.e. cookies, bars, etc.

Coconut cream. Yes, have seen Sarena’s recipe. She has so many awesome ones. As do you, my friend :)

Amy B @ Second City Randomness January 28, 2011 at 6:26 am

I’ve seen these floating around the blogs, but am yet to try them. I prefer having a little bit more chew, and really do like the steel cut variety, so I’m sure they’d be right up my alley…

Matt @ The Athlete's Plate January 28, 2011 at 6:29 am

Rolled oats are my fav ;)

lindsay January 28, 2011 at 6:56 am

Are these kinda like scottish porride oats? I love those! I just found an oatbran cereal at whole foods. Pretty good stats too! Thought of you.

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 7:07 am

Lindsay,
I’ve never tried Scottish oats, but from what I’ve heard about them, yes, I think that Coach’s Oats might be similar. Hope you enjoy your oat bran cereal – makes me so happy it made you think of me. :)

Carolyn January 28, 2011 at 7:10 am

Oats=yum
oatbran=yum yum…
need to start adding those preserves.. i have four jars in the cupboard!.
black Friday overbuying…

…i see a coconut cream intervention in your future ;-)

…but, secretly i’m so jealous… that darn coconut flour hates my stomach…

Alexandra (Veggin' Out in the Kitchen) January 28, 2011 at 7:18 am

Love steel cut oats, but don’t love the time? That’s me! I’m going to look for those oats next time I’m at the store!
I want to make that cream so badly! Maybe tomorrow…… :)

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey January 28, 2011 at 7:18 am

I had to eat steel cut oats for about a month as I could not find my GF rolled oats AYWHERE when I went shopping. I like them, but tey’re a little too chewy for me and don’t get quite as plumped up! I finally found my rolled oats – and bought a package of steel cut – so I’m thinking about combining the two! :)

Katherine: Unemployed January 28, 2011 at 7:24 am

I love the title. I can only picture a warden-like oat coming in with a cowboy hat and chasing all the old oats away

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 7:44 am

Katherine,
Haha – that’s the scenario I was going for. :)

Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 28, 2011 at 8:30 am

I’ve never had steel-cut oats! I always mean to try them…but I love my rolled oats so!

Erika @ FoodFitnessFun January 28, 2011 at 8:35 am

I hate to admit it but the only oats I’ve ever had were regular quick-cooking oats and rolled. Oh, and Cream of Wheat if it counts…
Where do you buy your oat bran? I’ve looked at Whole Foods and they don’t carry it! :-?

Gina January 28, 2011 at 8:36 am

If you want steel cut oats but (a) don’t have the time to cook them and (b) want them smooth and creamy, cook them like this: Put a deep bowl in your crock pot (make sure the lid still fits on). In the bowl, put one cup of steel cut oats along with 3-1/2 cups of water. Season as you like (I put cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and a pinch of sea salt). Fill the crock pot around the bowl with water, up to the level of the water in the bowl – basically, you are cooking them in a water bath (bain marie). Turn crock pot on – doesn’t matter if it’s low or high, just time it so that they are done before you get up in the morning – and go to bed. Wake up to amazingly delicious, smooth & creamy steel cut oatmeal! This makes a lot but they reheat well in the microwave with a little added water and reheated on medium power.

Carrie S. January 28, 2011 at 8:45 am

I made the coconut cream this morning, but also added a scoop of carob and a scoop of TJ’s peanut flour. Hello, yummy! Eating it with my breakfast quinoa right now. Mmmmm.

Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete January 28, 2011 at 8:46 am

I’ve heard of Coach’s Oats but I’ve never seen them in stores — I’ll have to check online.

I love mushy rolled oats — I cook the hell out of them and they taste so good!

Liz @ Tip Top Shape January 28, 2011 at 8:49 am

I like my oats mushy, too. So..probably skipping over these! Is it bad that I’ve never tried oat bran?? Or the coconut cream? I’ve got some catching up to do!

brandi January 28, 2011 at 8:49 am

the texture sounds great! I love steel cut oats, but I don’t make them very often.

also…I need to look up this coconut cream.

kate@ahealthypassion January 28, 2011 at 9:14 am

I have not tried either but the coconut cream looks fabulous, I think that will be the first thing I try

Kelsey @ Clean Teen Kelsey January 28, 2011 at 9:14 am

Thanks for this post, Heather! I’ve actually been wondering about Coach’s Oats. I’m thinking I need to give them a try… I like the idea of them being chewy like steel cut, but quick-cooking like rolled oats. That’s one of the main reasons I still choose rolled oats over steel cut: the convenience of them. I like being able to cook up a big bowl of oats in 15 minutes, as opposed to waiting 45 mins or so for steel cut.

Stephanie @ Thorns Have Roses January 28, 2011 at 10:10 am

I’m all over that coconut cream. This weekend. It’s happening!

Sylvia @ LifeIsGoodWithFood January 28, 2011 at 10:23 am

Haven’t made that coconut cream yet, but have already bookmarked the link and going to make it as soon as I can!

I just had Stonewall Kitchen’s Red Pepper Jelly the other day… and omigod, that stuff is awesome. I’m thinking of recreating that one as well ;)

Michele January 28, 2011 at 10:46 am

Coach’s Oats are my FAVORITE! I have a bowl EVERY morning with chocolate protein powder! Yummers! :) And moving forward…I’m thinking that coconut cream will be added! Sounds SO good!

Nessy January 28, 2011 at 10:56 am

I am going to buy some coconut flour and make coconut cream tomorrow! So excited :-) I also prefer rolled oats over steel cut because the consistency is so creamy and smooth. I eat them almost every morning!

Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn January 28, 2011 at 11:09 am

That coconut cream looks to DIE for!! Ahhhh now I am craving creamy concoctions:)

Felicia (a taste of health with balance) January 28, 2011 at 11:31 am

I love mushy hot thick oats :) I realized that when I was leaving comments with my other email (atasteofhealthwithbalance@gmail) it wasn’t showing up, so i’m using this email now.. but not my picture doesn’t come up. boo :(

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Felicia,
I would email wordpress to tell them your email wasn’t working. Maybe they can fix it, or you could always make this email your primary wordpress email so that your photo shows up – you just need to change it in your account settings.

Kaleigh January 28, 2011 at 11:51 am

I’m sure people have asked you this a million times, but do companies usually send you their product and ask you to review them, or do you contact them? It seems like you are always finding cool new things to try. How do you find them?! Personally, I’m dying to try your cocoa cream concoction! Hopefully soon :)

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 1:10 pm

Kaleigh,
Sometimes I contact the company and sometimes they contact me. Coach’s Oats actually offered to send me samples via Twitter. :)

If I find a product I really like, I’ll just email the company and usually they send me samples. I figure the worst they can say is no. Always worth a try, and I’ve discovered some great products that way.

Baking 'n' Books January 28, 2011 at 11:53 am

I’ve never tried steel-cut oats. But I like chewy.

Interesting – I like oat bran but find it to be a creamy consistency versus the oatmeal? Because the flakes are so small? It’s the Bob’s Red Mill kind, not sure if that’s what your talking about…

Mary @ Bites and Bliss January 28, 2011 at 11:54 am

Those oats look interesting. I havent tried them but sure would love to!

Melissa January 28, 2011 at 12:03 pm

I love COACHES! I eat it every morning. They sell it at my Costco in AZ. Its the best!

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Melissa,
Really? My in-laws are in Scottsdale. I’ll have to tell them to stock up for next visit. :)

Jen January 28, 2011 at 12:14 pm

I’ve also never met an oat I didn’t love, so I’m going to check out their site and see if it’s available anywhere near me! I just bought a box of oat bran last weekend, but have yet to try it…looks good on the box though :0

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Jen,
I hope you like the oat bran! :)

Jen January 28, 2011 at 1:32 pm

I’m sure I will!

Melomeals: Vegan for $3.33 a Day January 28, 2011 at 12:21 pm

Those sound really good! I love steel cut oats.. and I love rolled oats.

My favorite are the high quality rolled oats that take a good 20 minutes to make on the stove..

Corey @ the runners cookie January 28, 2011 at 1:47 pm

I have to agree with you that rolled oats and oat bran are the best :) Coach’s Oats sound really interesting – especially the texture and that they toast their oats to bring out natural sweetness. Great find, Heather!

Ana January 28, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I have never heard of Coach’s oat… Rolled oats are also my favorites, but I like oats in all forms really!
The coconut cream is awesome, I had it many times this week with my oats and by its own, my favorite is with carob! (and using carob powder is much better than melting the chips, love that!!)
Ana

Melissa January 28, 2011 at 2:20 pm

I’ve heard of them, but never tried. Will have to get my hands on some.

I LOVE oats, eat them every day

Sara (Miles and Manhattan) January 28, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Oh i’ve heard about these…thanks for the review i’ll poke around nyc and see if i can find them!

I have never heard of those but they look good and good for you!!

Christine (The Raw Project) January 28, 2011 at 5:08 pm

With a texture similar to steel cut, these sound wonderfully fast.

kathleen January 28, 2011 at 5:42 pm

I get my steel cut oats mushy by soaking them overnight. Putting them in a sauce pan adding more water and then bringing it to a boil before leaving it on low for 30 minutes. Surprisingly, they will soak up more water and not be chewy. Although, you have to play with the amount of water and cook time. If you add too much water they will be watery.

Kelly January 28, 2011 at 6:39 pm

I would LOVE this because I hate mushy oats. I always undercook mine so they are still chewy…these would be perfect for me! :)

Emily January 28, 2011 at 7:34 pm

Bought oat bran today after being inspired by you! Do you just prepare it with water?

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 10:33 pm

Emily,
Yes, I usually just prepare the oat bran with water. 1/2 cup oat bran to 1 cup water. It cooks in about a minute or two on the stove-top. It’s so thick and yummy. I love it. Here are some oat bran recipes:
http://heathereatsalmondbutter.com/2011/01/07/oat-bran-101-2/

http://heathereatsalmondbutter.com/2011/01/18/cookies-and-milk/
Enjoy! :)

Alyssa January 28, 2011 at 8:45 pm

I’ve seen them in huge bags at Costco! I’ve wanted to buy them but I’m trying to be better about buying only GF certified oats. Hence, I haven’t bought them :-(

J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) January 28, 2011 at 9:02 pm

I haven’t tried Coach’s Oats or Sarena’s coconut cream, but they both look YUMMY!

I’ve actually never had steel cut oats, either. What planet am I from? haha

The thing is, I love oatmeal, yet hardly ever cook it! I don’t know why, especially because every time I have it I wonder why the heck I never make it.

Annie January 28, 2011 at 9:59 pm

I’m a steel cut girl.. but I do love oat bran too (especially with whipped egg whites).. but a big no no no to rolled oats… yep.. too mushy… eeeewwwwww.. I bet I’d like Coach’s oats…
Annie

HEAB January 28, 2011 at 10:28 pm

Annie,
Yep, I bet you would! :)

Alisa Fleming January 29, 2011 at 12:22 am

Yep, I’m out here :)

Thanks for reminding me that I still need to try steel cut oats! I am so not a mushy cereal girl and actually barely add hot water to rolled oats … just let them soften, but I never cook them. I go for chewy over mushy any day. I’ll give steel cut a try and then maybe give the coach a shot.

HEAB January 29, 2011 at 4:45 am

Alisa,
I think you would love both steel cut and Coach’s Oats. Major chew factor going on and much less mushy. :)

Kathleen @ Kat's Health Corner January 29, 2011 at 1:03 am

I haven’t tried either! :( I want to give those coach oats a try though. :)

Katie @ peacebeme January 29, 2011 at 9:27 am

I have a HUGE bag of Coach’s oats in my cupboard right now. They are awesome. I live in Denver and we can get them at Costco here…

Lauren January 29, 2011 at 11:41 am

Hello there from the UK! I love porridge and found it really interesting that you say that even though steel cut oats are really nice and chew, that they don’t satisfy you like rolled oats do. I feel exactly the same. The creamier my porridge is the more it seems to fill me up but I am still yet to find a way to make my porridge creamy like yours looks in the photos; do you have any tips? Mine just ends up being thick but very chewy and it just isn’t the same as being creamy. Perhaps I need to try oatbran? I am gluten free though and I have to be really careful with the oats I use. Thanks for any advice! x

HEAB January 29, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Lauren,
Yes, the creamier the better and so much more filling! Did you see this recipe? http://heathereatsalmondbutter.com/2011/01/18/cookies-and-milk/ The oats turned out really creamy when prepared that way, and I’m sure it would work just as well even without the addition of oat bran. That being said oat bran is my absolute favorite, and I’m not sure if you can get it in the UK, but I know they make gluten free oat bran: http://www.amazon.com/Legacy-Valley-Gluten-48-Ounce-Pouches/dp/B002SZHWNS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1296327260&sr=8-2.

Also, for a creamier bowl of rolled oats, you could always try Katie’s blended grains trick. One of my favs! http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2008/09/22/do-you-want-to-know-a-secret-part-ii/

Lauren January 30, 2011 at 9:33 am

Thank you! I will try both those methods. I love porridge when the consistency is like rice pudding and it just seems to fill me up so much more than when it is chewy. So random! Lx

Lauren @ WWoB January 29, 2011 at 1:12 pm

good morning favorite blogger of mine!
those oats are fascinating….. i might need to give them a try. i stopped eating oatmeal a month or so ago because i just got bored of it. current breakfast addiction is home made muffin crumbled into greek yogurt bowl with nut butter. i really need to mix it up. i hope you, summer, and CD have a lovely weekend :)

HEAB January 29, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Well, good afternoon to my favorite commenter. :)

Your current breakfast addiction sounds good to me – no need to mix it up in my opinion. I mean, why mess with a good thing?

Hope you’re having a lovely weekend as well Lauren!

Moni'sMeals January 29, 2011 at 2:27 pm

so great to know! Yes, a new oats in town for sure. I look forward to trying this. :)

Katie January 29, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Hey that’s awesome – I used to swim with Coach’s wife! Just bought some at Costco yesterday myself. Have you tried their cookies? They make these amazing oatmeal-craisin-walnut cookies, although they are a bit sweet for me. I bet you could heabify them though :)

HEAB January 29, 2011 at 8:38 pm

Katie,
That’s so cool you know Coach’s wife – they sound like a neat family, and yes, I read about the cookies in the info. they sent me. I want to make them soon, with a few HEABifications of course. :)

Ashley @ the fit academic January 29, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Argh! I want some coconut cream now! I need to just get on it, but I’ve been busy with other things. Sounds super-yum!

Erik Marcus January 29, 2011 at 10:28 pm

That’s really a great idea to present a quicker-cooking alternative to steel cut oats, but one that won’t get mushy. I’d love to try this stuff, but it sounds like I’ll have to join Costco to have a chance at buying it in my area.

Tanya January 31, 2011 at 5:39 pm

I love oats!! I eat them every morning. Usually I go with the whole oat groats. But I’ve recently started eating other kinds, like steel cut and I love those too! My husband eats the rolled, but I prefer mine more chewy. Never heard of this brand…will have to check them out!

Sarah February 5, 2011 at 9:25 am

I just whipped up some of that coconut cream and my kids are all over it. I spread mine in a grainless crepe (thanks for that recipe BTW) and some sliced bananas. YUMMO!
