Let The Solids Begin

by HEAB on May 3, 2011

Hello my almond butter loving friends. If you're new to HEAB, you may like to subscribe to my RSS feed or receive my posts via email. Thanks for reading!

Summer had her first meal yesterday.

Again, we’re doing Baby Led Weaning, and you can read more about it in this post. We’re not mushing, pureeing, and spoon feeding, and for the most part, Summer will simply feed herself whatever we’re eating. Yesterday, I baked up a batch of sweet potato fries in the oven.

IMG_5514.JPG

She gnawed on 3 for about 30 minutes.

IMG_5510.JPG

This is Summer smiling at the dogs. Radley ended up with at least one fry.

In hindsight, a bib would have been a good idea. Life is about to get a little messy. :)

Awww, YAY Summer!! :) I think that’s a wonderful food-introduction method, Heather. I’m sure Summer will have so much fun tasting foods for the very first time. And how cool is it to live an an age to be able to so easily photograph every new experience?! Would have loved to see pics of my first meal… Love it!

Victoria (District Chocoholic) May 3, 2011 at 10:27 am

It seems so fitting that her first meal was sweet potato-based. Like mother, like daughter.

Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing May 3, 2011 at 10:30 am

This is so adorable! Her little smile just warms my heart. I even showed these pics to my husband, because they were just too cute :) Love your method!

glidingcalm May 3, 2011 at 10:37 am

she is insanely adorable!!! yay for solid foods!!!

Ana May 3, 2011 at 10:38 am

Introducing foods is a fun phase Heather, enjoy this! Matheus’ favorite food when we started solids was by far sweet potatoes! He also liked bananas, but he liked sweet potatoes more. And he does so until today, every time he eats sweet potatoes he raves and says that he has always liked them, since he was a baby! :-)

Jen @ keepitsimplefoods May 3, 2011 at 10:43 am

Love that shot of Summer smiling at the pups! She’s such a cutie- those cheeks are too much! :) Love that she’s eating sweet taters just like her mom.

Marina May 3, 2011 at 10:55 am

What a great first solid food for Summer!
She looks like she likes it :)

RunEatRepeat May 3, 2011 at 11:00 am

So cute! My mom says sweet potato was my favorite food as a baby :)

alli May 3, 2011 at 11:03 am

oh, so fun! what a cutie! i’ve been planning on giving sweet potato to eli for his first food, too :)
when i make my sweet potato fries, i coat in them evoo or coconut oil and add salt. did you do do anything different with yours vs the ones you gave summer?

HEAB May 3, 2011 at 11:07 am

Alli,
I simply cut the sweet potato in long spears and roasted them on a baking rack for 45 minutes in a 425 degree oven. I didn’t coat them with anything, but I’m not against using coconut oil or salt on Summer’s food. Personally, I don’t like to heat olive oil b/c it oxidizes. For high heat cooking, I stick to coconut oil, butter, or ghee.

Hope Eli enjoys his sweet taters. They were a hit with Summer!

alli May 3, 2011 at 7:52 pm

thanks heather! :)

Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) May 3, 2011 at 11:15 am

The messes were the worst part! Tony and I had a really hard time with that part. You have to hose them down afterwards….good thing summer time is coming up. Makes for more fun in the hosing down department!

Natalie @ cinnamon bums May 3, 2011 at 11:20 am

haha so cute! getting her hooked on sweet potatoes at such a young age… that’s the way to go!

S @ extremebalance.net/blog May 3, 2011 at 11:27 am

At first, I was imagining them like I make them—cayenne, S&P, more pepper, and turmeric… which is SO fun, but I suppose she needs to grow into it. :D

Lookin’ good!

VeggieGirl May 3, 2011 at 11:33 am

She’s growing up so quickly!!! Beautiful :)

Gavi @ Gavi Gets Going! May 3, 2011 at 11:36 am

Heather, Summer is so unbelievably gorgeous and she just looks so HAPPY! Congratulations on her first solid meal (and I’m sure it was delicious!)! Thanks so much for sharing this part of your journey with us. I can’t wait to see how your blog changes and grows.

HEAB May 3, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Thanks Gavi, and yes, Summer was a big fan of sweet potatoes. Like mother like daughter. :)

Kelsey May 3, 2011 at 11:41 am

Summer is SO CUTE! I’m so proud of her, and impressed that sweet potatoes were her first solid food :)

Alyssa May 3, 2011 at 11:42 am

So sweet! And what an exciting time!

Holly @ The Runny Egg May 3, 2011 at 11:53 am

Summer is so cute — love the picture of her smiling at the dogs.

Jennifer@ knackfornutrition May 3, 2011 at 11:56 am

That is a first meal of champions! So cute!

lindsay May 3, 2011 at 12:00 pm

when do we get to see the nut butters? hehe.

HEAB May 3, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Lindsay,
Unfortunately, we’re going to hold off the nut butters for a while and no whole nuts for a few years as they’re a choking hazard. However, we might try sunflower seed butter soon.

janetha @ meals & moves May 3, 2011 at 12:02 pm

OH MY GOSH i love these photos, especially of the one of Summer smiling at the pups. What a great first meal :)

HEAB May 3, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Thanks JG Bean. I got out the I ♥ HEABified Eats bib you sent Summer today. I love it so much. Our favorite bib by far! :)

Dorry May 3, 2011 at 12:10 pm

I love her expressions! She’s becoming such a little girl. Sweet potatoes – perfect first food experience.

brandi May 3, 2011 at 12:10 pm

seriously – she is too cute! especially that little grin for the pups :)

katie May 3, 2011 at 12:33 pm

She is just full of to much cuteness!!!!!!

Yay for solid foods! And yes for bibs! things are going to get messy!!!!

xoxo

Jen May 3, 2011 at 12:45 pm

We did baby led solids with my youngest, so much easier than the jarred crap!

Allison May 3, 2011 at 12:55 pm

Cute! My babies loved, loved, loved avocados. I’d just scoop bites right out of the skin.

HEAB May 3, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Allison,
Avocados are on the menu – just bought a bag and waiting for them to ripen.

Melissa B. May 4, 2011 at 11:33 am

Oh, my niece and nephews LOVE them too! They practically beg for them.

rachael May 3, 2011 at 12:59 pm

What a cutie! I rarely bothered with bibs because he pulled them off half the time, and even when he didn’t he seemed to get dirty despite the bib, they just seemed to make more laundry. My mother certainly did not like my lack of bib usage though. :)

HEAB May 3, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Rachael,
Yeah, I’m thinking the shirtless look would work much better…and my mom is doing her best to stay quiet. Ha, I know it’s a challenge at times as we’re doing things so differently than what she did with me and my brothers. However, she really respects my decisions…and has only questioned a few. ;)

R @ Learning As I Chop May 3, 2011 at 1:16 pm

She is just so cute

Jessica @ The Mom Creative May 3, 2011 at 1:20 pm

What a sweetie!

Kayla May 3, 2011 at 1:36 pm

She just has the happiest disposition, doesn’t she? So sweet.

Courtney (greeneyedrunner) May 3, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Aw, congratulations! I hadn’t heard of Baby Led Weaning until I read your blog and I really like the idea! How perfectly HEABlet, a sweet potato first meal :) Throw in some AB and some mustard, and she’ll be set!

Halley (Blunder Construction) May 3, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Sweet potato fries… starting her off with the best of the best solid foods have to offer! :) This is a great technique, I hope you have luck with it.

Rachael May 3, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Love your approach to feeding – I’m already reading up on it…
Summer is impossibly cute, and all that dark hair makes me wish that I and my partner weren’t quite so Nordic!

HEAB May 3, 2011 at 8:01 pm

Rachael,
I was wondering how you were doing. Chris and I were both blond when we were kids – like really blond. So, I’m wondering if Summer’s hair will stay dark. I was born with black hair like she was and then it got lighter and lighter. We shall see. Kind of hope it stays dark as I love blue eyes and dark hair. :)

Sarah R May 3, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Oh my goodness–I can’t believe she’s ready to start on solids! It seems like just yesterday you were bringing her home from the hospital. I have to say that it’s very fitting that her first solid was sweet potato :)

Courtney May 3, 2011 at 3:14 pm

Aww! So cute :D Yay for Summer!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) May 3, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Omg she is BEAUTIFUL!!!

And I love that her first food is not rice cereal <—bland and boring much ?

And that it's not some mushed up puree..and that it's what else, a sweet tater fry! Love it!

Gnawing, feeling, holding…that's what it's all about. I love that you are doing BLW, which is what we did. And yes, bibs save lives. And laundry.

She is just a vision to behold with those beautiful eyes. She will just need to bat those at CD and she will get anything she wants I'm thinking :)

Mary @ Bites and Bliss May 3, 2011 at 3:19 pm

What an amazing first meal!! I wish my first meal were sweet potato fries. I do know my first word was “more” though..and I’m pretty sure hers will be too if you keep feeding her stuff like that! ;)

Ann May 3, 2011 at 3:28 pm

She’s SO ADORABLE!!! <3 seriously one of the cutest babies I've ever seen. And how lucky that she gets to eat sweet potatoes first :D

Kristen - Anywhere There's An Airport May 3, 2011 at 3:41 pm

In the last pic I love that she is clutching on to that fry for dear life. I feel the same way! :)

Erin May 3, 2011 at 3:52 pm

Heather, I just had to comment….Summer is so, so, so stinkin’ cute! Love the pics of her today!

Elena @ GagaForGrapefruit May 3, 2011 at 3:52 pm

Too precious for words :)

Dea May 3, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Love it! The cute!
Adam wants to rig a devise that will go around Hudson’s chair from the celing, like a kayak bib, so everything will roll back down to him.

Maria (Maria Makes Muffins) May 3, 2011 at 5:08 pm

So cute!!! I love her little smile!

Matthew’s favorite food is sweet potatoes, he loves smooshing and smearing them just as much as he enjoys eating them.

HEAB May 3, 2011 at 7:59 pm

Thanks Maria. Summer loved the sweet potatoes…there was lots of smooshing and smearing going on for sure. :)

stephs May 3, 2011 at 5:30 pm

The second photo of her gnawing is just precious! Gah!

Kath (My Funny Little Life) May 3, 2011 at 5:38 pm

My mom used to make all the food herself she fed me when I was little. She would cook vegetables until tender and then puree them, and also cook porridges etc for me. Carrots and beets were one of my favorite combinations, and are still nowadays. :)

Corey @ runners cookie May 3, 2011 at 5:44 pm

Yay, Summer!! Sweet potato was a great choice for a first meal on her part :) Also, the 6 month pictures are beyond words – so precious. You have such a beautiful family, Heather!

samantha May 3, 2011 at 6:01 pm

These photos show just how much she is growing! Such a beautiful and blessed little sweet pea. And yum at the sweet potato fries…lucky kid…and lucky Radley for getting to share ;)

Awwwww, yay for Summer! She is just too cute!! :D

I love how sweet potatoes were her first solid meal – I would have loved it if they had been my first solid meal :)

I hope you and your wonderful family have a fabulous rest of the week!

i believe that last face is her wondering where the nut butter is! it is so exciting watching her grow up! it seems like just yesterday you were welcoming her into the world & now she’s stealing your sweet potaters!

Brandae May 3, 2011 at 8:11 pm

LOVE the pics of her chomping on the fries! They made me smile! Thanks for sharing. :)

Kathleen @ KatsHealthCorner May 3, 2011 at 10:21 pm

AWWEEEE!!!! SO CUTE!

Christine May 3, 2011 at 10:25 pm

WOW! She looks like she’s really enjoying those sweet potatoes :-) When I first tried babyled weaning, my little one could have cared less about eating. It took some patience, but she eats like a champ now! Go Summer!

HEAB May 4, 2011 at 9:27 am

Christine,
She seems to get it, although there is not much food going down. We’ll keep at it. It’s so fascinating watching her make her first food discoveries. I try not to stare and just let her do her thing, but I can’t help myself. I’m sure you understand. :)

Erin May 3, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Summer is truly the cutest baby I have ever, ever seen! Adorable!

HEAB May 4, 2011 at 9:25 am

Thanks Erin. I know I’m biased, but I think so too. :)

lorne May 3, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Mess…… yup ;0) You are about to find food in places that leaves you wondering how on earth it could have got there! lol

hanna May 3, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Summer is such a doll!
so beautiful!

Hannah May 3, 2011 at 11:27 pm

Messy, but fun, exciting, and rewarding!

P.S. I keep expecting to see Summer with a pink streak in her hair ;)

HEAB May 4, 2011 at 9:25 am

Hannah,
Guess I could never say no to a pink streak, huh? ;)

Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope May 4, 2011 at 5:59 am

So exciting about the solid foods! Summer is adorable! :)

Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli May 4, 2011 at 7:01 am

Aww, yay Summer! How perfect that her first meal be a sweet potato! You’re starting her out right m’dear! Love the pic of her smiling at the pups!

Nikki May 4, 2011 at 8:09 am

Ha! So stinkin’ cute! So did she manage to get enough to eat after gnawing on those fries?

I think how you’re getting her onto solids is a great method, by the way!

HEAB May 4, 2011 at 9:23 am

Nikki,
Definitely not enough to fill her little belly. Until she gets the whole food thing, formula will make up most of her diet, and she’s still getting a little breast milk from me. This morning we tried cooked carrots and a scrambled egg yolk. So fun. :)

Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food May 4, 2011 at 9:33 am

what a cutie! I am loving seeing how this baby led weaning goes. So informative and nice to see something more intuitive then what I was taught in my “Nutrition Through the Lifecycle” Class!

VEGirl May 4, 2011 at 9:43 am

You and all your blog readers are witnessing the growth of a new sweet potato connoisseur :)

tracey May 4, 2011 at 11:33 am

I am shoving sweet potato oven fries in my face as we speak- not unlike Summer’s method ;) YUM!

I wonder what her favorite foods will be..
