Pie For Breakfast

I love the 60 minute Hot-Power Fusion class from YogaDownload, except I could not do Balancing Stick to save my life this morning.  Wobbling all over the place! Honestly, I have a hard time  doing more than 20 or 30 minutes of yoga at home. At the studio, the time seems to fly by, but I get so distracted in our house.  I swear, one little fuzzball on the carpet will drive me crazy until I finally have to hit pause and pick it up in the middle of a flow.  However, with the Hot-Power Fusion class, I’m totally focused and always surprised when it’s time for Savasana.  Love that!

Yesterday, I was reunited with Justine.  J, it had been way too long!

Me, Justine, and her Little One

Me, Justine, and her Little One...I need a haircut.

Once again, we met up the Whole Foods salad/hot bar, and Little One, and Justine’s best friend joined us. Um, my bowl got a little out of control. What do you think? Gliding Calm worthy? :)

Veggies galore with hummus dressing.

Guess what’s back in my life?!?

My beloved oatgurt.

My beloved oatgurt.

Oh my gosh, I love this stuff!  Oatgurt tip: Before fermenting, make sure you BLEND and BLEND your oat groats until they are thick and creamy – not too watery.  This past weekend, I had to throw out an entire batch as I basically ended up with a bowl of watery sour oat groats.  Usually CD and I are fighting over every last bite, but neither of us had a problem with pitching it.  Thankfully, my latest oatgurt came out perfectly – like a big creamy round loaf of sourdough. Couldn’t wait to serve myself up a slice for breakfast:

Oatgurt a la almond butter mode.

Oatgurt a la almond butter mode.

Oatgurt with homemade raw almond butter and bananas.  Now, I know I  mentioned in my weight loss post that I try and avoid fruit, try being the key word.  I mean, life without bananas?  What’s the point, right Pol? :)

I cannot believe it’s July 1 already!  Any big plans for the 4th?  What was your favorite firecracker as a kid?  I loved Jumping Jacks and those little Pagoda houses. Anyone remember those?

Explosive Morning

Wow – so many amazing comments on my weight loss post.  Reading them brought me so much joy – you guys amaze me!  Thank you so much for reminding me why I started blogging in the first place as lately I feel all I’ve done is share my bizarre meals with you…you do love my bizarre eats, right? :)

This morning was nothing short of a disaster in the kitchen.  First, there was a chia seed explosion involving my Vita-Mix…don’t ask.  2 hours later, and I’m still discovering little blobs of chia glue everywhere…

like on my sleeve.

like on my sleeve.

I then proceeded to make another batch of chia gel for my morning smoothie.  Look how creamy and yummy my smoothie looked…

Looks can be deceiving.

Yeah, well looks can be deceiving.

This was beyond Heat the Salmon Butt bad…we’re talking projectile vomit gross. Usually, I eat my disasters, but this one went straight down the kitchen sink. Blech. I can’t tell you what it contained quite yet as it was part of a product review I’m doing.  I’ll say this much…it was not Amazing.

So, instead I ate something I knew would make me happy:

My favorite bowl of oat bran.

My favorite bowl of oat bran.

I had about 1/4 a jar of ABU left and dumped some plain oat brain in on top.  This definitely made up for the smoothie!

After finishing off my jar, I realized I was completely out of any sort of almond butter.  Huh..wha?!?  Must make more ASAP.  So, I did:

Homemade raw almond butter.

Homemade raw almond butter.

Many of you have asked how I make my homemade nut butters, and now you can click here for the process. By the way, did y’all know it was National Almond Butter Day yesterday?  I hope you celebrated as much as I did.

I must leave you now for some yoga, but before I go, don’t forget the following:

In honor of Justine’s 100th post, I’m going to leave my own Confession of the Day:

I despise both sushi & wine.  Every year, I try them, hoping my taste buds will have changed, but nope.  Can’t do it my friends…can’t do it.  Give me Mexican food over Japanese any day, and I’d like a glass of water with lemon…no ice. Thanks. :)

HEAB’s Weight Loss Advice

After several emails regarding my weight loss, I’ve just decided to do an entire post about it.

Yes, I used to be overweight:

HIgh-school graduation.

High-school graduation June 1994.

Now, I’m not. Post weight loss & dressed all in white once again:

My wedding day - September 22, 2007.

My wedding day - September 22, 2007.

Did y’all know I’m 33 years old?  Well, I am, and I lost over 100 pounds after my senior year of college.  I did it all on my own, and I’ve kept it off for 10 years now, never re-gaining more than 10 pounds.  People that see me now are shocked when they learn I used to be heavy.  They tell me I look like I’ve never struggled with weight in my life.  Well, I have, and I have the loose skin and stretch marks to prove it.  Let’s just say I’m very thankful for sports bras and Spanx. :)

How did I do it?  Well, I completely changed everything about my lifestyle:

1. No sugar.  If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, then you know I CANNOT eat sugar, including fruit.  I do my best to stay completely away from it. So, if I don’t accept a piece of your birthday or wedding cake, please don’t be offended.  Just hand me a jar of nut butter instead! Giving up sugar and white flour worked wonders for me.

My advice to all of you struggling out there to lose weight is EAT.  Eat the good stuff including vegetables galore, lean proteins, and healthy fats…but stay away from sugar.  Yes, you will probably lose weight on a 1200 – 1300 calorie diet of Zbars and carob chips, but do you realize what you’re feeding your body?  Wouldn’t you rather have a huge amazingly yummy salad like this?

IMG_2423

2. Eat your fats. After I lost weight, my fat intake got down to almost nothing.  I looked and felt awful. My hair was dry, brittle, and would not grow.  My hormones got all out of whack and are still messed up.  Our bodies need fat to function. Please don’t make the same mistakes I did.  Eat that avocado, quit measuring your nut butters, and perhaps add a little coconut oil to your next smoothie.  I probably eat 4 to 6 TBSP of almond butter everyday, tons of chia seeds,  and I usually add an avocado to the mix as well.  Again, you NEED fat – don’t fear it!

3. Move. During my weight loss, I walked and did yoga and strength training videos.  After my weight loss, I started running and didn’t stop for about 8 years. After my first 5K, I was hooked, and I grew to truly love running.  It was a novelty for me at first.  Y’all when I was overweight, I couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs without getting out of breath.  All of a sudden, I was running and running far.  Well, after over 20 half marathons, 1 full marathon, and 1 50K, I realized I wasn’t enjoying running so much anymore, and I was eating a lot of crap to fuel those long runs.  So, I stopped running, and I stopped eating crap.  It’s been 7 months since my last real run, and I’m now thinner and more toned thanks to yoga and walking.  So, my exercise advice to you is run if it makes you happy.  However, it if doesn’t, then do something else, but just do something.  Keep moving and stay active, but don’t feel like you have to get your heart rate up to 80% max for hours on end.  You don’t, okay?

4. Question conventional wisdom. Back when I was eating vegan and restricting my fat intake and just about every other food group (I lost over 100 pounds and was scared to death of gaining it back – yes, I had issues.), my mom was worried and had me go see a nutritionist at a well regarded hospital here in Nashville (starts with a “V”, rhymes with wanderbilt). Anyway, she told me to add weight gaining smoothies to my diet consisting of grape juice, corn syrup, heavy cream, and ice. I kid you not, and I never went back.  Nothing against registered dieticians, but if you do seek the advice of one, make sure you are both on the same page.  Do your research – ask if your RD has any testimonials from former patients.  If he or she even mentions the FDA’s food pyramid, my advice is run away.  I’m sorry, but do you really want the same people who run the DMV and airport security telling you what you should be eating?  Yeah, I didn’t think so.

5. Figure out what works best for you. It took me a while, and I still play around with my diet, but I know what works for me.  Complex carbs? Yes.  Fruit? No.  I can eat huge bowls of oat bran and sweet potatoes, even…gasp…late at night right before going to bed, and it doesn’t seem to affect my weight. However, give me freshly squeezed juice or an apple, and my muffin top will appear almost instantly. I’ve posted on this topic before, but there is no perfect diet for everyone my friends.  Again, experiment with real whole foods, and LISTEN to your body.  You do not need to buy the latest diet book, because guess what?  It doesn’t have all the answers. Only you can figure out what works best for you.

Please don’t hesitate to email me with questions.  That’s why I started blogging in the first place – to help others out there know it is possible to lose a large amount of weight AND maintain the weight loss.

Be sure to check out Emily’s blog Curly Top for a special post on oat bran.  Emily is the brilliant creator of PBU and has put together a really cool design for all my favorite oat bran recipes. My Guilty Pleasure(s)…

Yesterday, I did the 60 minute Forrest Yoga class from YogaDownload. (Remember you have until June 30 to receive 50% of all classes at YogaDownload with the promotional code HEAB).  Forrest yoga = burning quads.  Wow, talk about some long Warrior holds.  My legs were on fire, but I really enjoyed this class.  There was no flow action, but a good deal of core work and focus on breath.  Good stuff!

Later in the day, I met a friend at Baja Burrito, the coolest little burrito shop and probably one of my favorite restaurants in town.  Now, coffee with cream is my #1 guilty pleasure, but chips are a close 2nd.  Y’all, I love tortilla chips.  I love them so much.  However, you will rarely see them in our house because once I start eating them, I can’t stop.  Yesterday’s lunch:

Salad piled high with veggies and guac and a basket of chips on the side.

Salad piled high with veggies and guac with a side of chips.

I hated it:

IMG_2608

So, if you’re ever in Nashville with a craving for Mexican, please call me…just don’t expect me to share the chip basket…or the guac. :)

After Thursday’s Heat the Salmon Butt breakfast, I decided to give xanthan gum and guar gum another chance, and they totally redeemed themselves in last night’s dessert.

Green Monster Ice-Cream

Green Monster Ice-Cream

I can’t believe how creamy this tasted.  So delicious.  Into the Vita-Mix went (yes, we made up):

  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 scoop Jay Robb chocolate rice protein powder
  • 3 handfuls of frozen spinach
  • handful ice
  • 5 drops dark chocolate stevia
  • 1/2 tsp xanthan gum
  • 1/2 tsp guar gum

I love the gums and their thickening abilities, and many thanks to reader Deb for suggesting I try them.

OK, off to a new yoga class called Bliss Yoga, 2 hours of deep core openings based on the principals of Svaroopa yoga. Don’t ask…I have no idea, but I’ll tell you all about it later. :)

Be sure to check out Faith’s informative post on the great milk debate.

A Winner & A Loser

Yesterday, me and the Vita-Mix had a little squabble:

Vita, you know I love ya, but sometimes, you're just too good at your job!

Vita, you know I love ya, but sometimes, you're just too good at your job!

My breakfast was to blame.

Over-blended oats.

Over-blended oats.

After my hour long talk with Dave, I decided try a new oat bran concoction.  Deb, my shake muse, asked me if I had ever tried summer squash in my oats.  Um no, but why not?  So, I made my chia protein oats, and blended in 2 steamed yellow squash.  I also added a little xanthan gum and guar gum (thanks for sending me this Deb!) to thicken up the mix. Long story short, I added too much water, and xanthan hum and guar gum should only be added to smoothies, not oat bran. The Vita-Mix blended everything up a little too well, and any sort of texture was completely lost.  This tasted like a bowl of vanilla oatie glue. Blech!  Definitely Heat the Salmon Butt worthy, and the only redeeming qualities were the ABU topping and the fact that I got to use my new bowl from Polly. :)

Still digusted by my breakfast, I wanted something simple and plain for lunch.  So, I made chicken sandwiches, Polly style:

HEAB's chicken wrappers.

HEAB's chicken wrappers.

After grilling a chicken breast with fresh lime juice, I shredded it, making tiny sandwiches with baby spinach leaves and Artisana’s raw coconut butter (thanks Justine…I don’t want this jar to ever end!)

This morning’s breakfast definitely made up for yesterday’s disaster:

Raw oatgurt love.

Raw oatgurt love.

This tasted so good – exactly what I wanted. My bowl consisted of a big blob of raw oatgurt (1 cup+), 1/2 chopped frozen banana, and 1/2 chopped avocado. High in calories?  Yes.  High in fat?  Yes.  My belly is now happy…

But my heart is sad.  What is your favorite Michael Jackson song?  Mine are Man In the Mirror and We Are The World.

ABU Lovin

This morning I did Dave Farmar’s Baptiste Power Vinyasa 60 minute yoga class.  I’ve done Dave’s podcasts several times now, and am I the only one who wants to tell him to shut-up be quiet?  I mean, he just goes on and on, and all I want to do is sit quietly in Pigeon.  Sorry Dave, you’re funny, but will you please stop talking?

OK, so I tried another version of The Shake yesterday:

Pink Fluffy Delight

Fluffy Pink Delight

Let me see if I can remember everything that went into this bowl…

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 TBSP chia seeds soaked in the water
  • 1 cup frozen raspberries (Scott, why I didn’t use a banana, I don’t know – next time for sure!)
  • 1/2 frozen avocado
  • 3/4 scoop Jay Robb’s vanilla rice protein powder
  • 1/2 tsp Xanthan Gum

Topped with way too much crunchy Sunbutter, and I was still hungry after eating this.  I swear my belly is a bottomless pit sometimes!

Last night, I got home a bit late, and ate exactly what I wanted:

Leftover steamed broccoli in ABU soup. :)

Broccoli in ABU soup. :)

I made the most amazing batch of ABU, consisting of 1 cup raw almond butter, 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 1/2 tsp maple extract, and 1 stevia packet.  I then poured drizzled it on some leftover steamed broccoli.  After my broccoli was gone, I sopped up the rest of the ABU with leftover steamed kabocha (about 3/4 of a whole squash)…then thought about steaming another one, but since it was 9 PM, decided that probably wasn’t a very good idea.

Woke up starving but waited to eat breakfast until after Dave stopped talking to me. I tried 2 new ingredients in my oat bran this morning, but you’ll have to tune in tomorrow to read all about it.

Have a good Thursday…and please tell me you’ve tried Emily’s PBU by now.

CD Goes 1/4 Raw

Yesterday, I did Polly’s Yummy Practice #1, and my hamstrings are sore today, especially after my 90 Vinyasa flow class on Monday.  Polly, I love your DVD!

YOGAISYUMMY-web1

Practice #1 is 35 minutes, and Practice #2 is 15 minutes, leaving you several different options.  Short on time? Surely, you can fit in 15 minutes of yummy yoga, or combine both classes for a 50 minute practice when you want something longer.  Polly’s 1st sequence was unlike any other I’d ever done as we started off with Dragonfly and core work and did not do a single Down Dog until the end.  It’s amazing how yummy your first Downward Dog feels after your hammies are already warm.  Polly, thank you so much for sharing your love for yoga with me! Your sweet personality shined through the entire practice, and I had a smile on my face during every pose…even Dragonfly. :)

There is a new favorite salad in our household, and you guys have got to try it!

Creamiest bowl of greens ever.

Creamiest bowl of greens ever.

Several people inspired this bowl of yum. There was Melissa, who shared with me her favorite salad made to order at Guppy’s restaurant, a shout-out to Trilby Drew for her brilliant Lemon-Garlic-Miso dressing, and as always, many thanks to Gena over at Choosing Raw for introducing me to massaged greens.  Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty my friends!

For the salad, I massaged spiralized zucchini squash noodles with 3 to 4 handfuls of raw spinach, juice of 1/2 lemon, 1/2 avocado, 1 heaping spoonful of miso paste, 2 cloves minced garlic, 1/2 packet of stevia, and salt and pepper to taste.  I then tossed in mushrooms, red bell pepper, and cherry tomatoes.  After sitting down with my monstrous bowl of rawness for some quality dinner conversation, CD requested a bite.  Well, the first bite turned into a second and then a third, and I finally just told him to take as much as he wanted which leads us to…

CD’s Random Comment of the Day:

Look, a Heather-style meat and three.

Roasted Brussel sprouts, curried chicken salad, raw massaged salad...and a bowl of sweet potato fries that didn't quite make it in the photo.

Roasted Brussel sprouts with parm, curried chicken salad, raw massaged salad...and a bowl of sweet potato fries that didn't quite make it in the photo.

I have a feeling this salad will be making many more appearances at our dinner table. :)

Feeling The Oat Bloat?

I don’t know if it’s the warm weather, but some days the oat bran is just too heavy for me.  Problem is, a smoothie-only breakfast never seems to sustain me for more than an hour or two.  Enter The Shake:

Chocolate covered berry shake topped with ABU.

Chocolate covered berry shake topped with ABU.

One of my readers (Hey Deb!) was kind enough to share her PB & J shake recipe with me, and I was eager to try my own version as Deb swears by this filling smoothie.  I improvised a little and came up with the following:

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 TBSP soaked chia seeds
  • 3/4 scoop Jay Robb vanilla rice protein
  • 1 TBSP cocoa powder
  • 5 drops dark chocolate stevia
  • 1 tsp maple extract
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 3.5 ounces frozen strawberries
  • 4 ounces frozen raspberries
  • 1/2 tsp Xanthan Gum (natural thickener made from fermented corn)
  • Handful of ice cubes
  • Topped with ABU (more about this later)

My smoothie contained a lot of ingredients, more than I would normally think to add.  However, if this is what it takes to make a delicious, yet filling shake, then I’m all for it.  The recipe needs a bit more tweaking as it wasn’t quite sweet enough. Maybe a little more stevia or 1/2 a banana instead of all the berries?  That being said, it was filling, but not in a brick in the belly kind of way.  Deb, it’s a winner!  Thanks again for the recipe.

What is ABU you ask?  Well, let me tell you about this most brilliant concoction. Based on Emily’s recipe for PBU, I simply blended 1/2 cup raw almond butter with 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk and 1 stevia packet.  Emily, I love you. ‘Nuff said. :)

A couple hours after breakfast, still completely satisfied, I went to my favorite 90 minute Vinyasa flow yoga class.  So great to be back on the mat after a few days off.  We concentrated on our hamstrings and ended with handstand.  My core really needs some work as I cannot life my legs up into handstand gracefully to save my life.  You’d think all those 3 minute plank holds would help.  What’s the deal?

After yoga…more ABU:

Green dipping platter.

Green dipping platter.

So, I basically ate 1/2 cup of almond butter in less than 7 hours.  Remind you of anyone? :)

Speaking of Polly, look what came in the mail yesterday:

So much Polly love!

So much Polly love!

My Yoga is Yummy DVD has arrived, and I am beyond excited.  Have you ordered your’s yet?  Why not?!?  Simply click here to do so. Polly was also sweet enough to send me a few other goodies, including a huge bowl for my oats and smoothies after I told her the last ones she sent were too small. Love you P!

Before I go try out some yummy yoga, I wanted to wish my older brother HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Love you Chip!!!!!

Love you Chip!!!!!

This past weekend in Florida, I almost fainted when Chip told me he had never tried almond butter.  My mom and I immediately bought him a jar, and he is now a convert.  Look, he even sent me a picture of his breakfast this morning:

Toasted bagel with almond butter and strawberries.

Toasted bagel with crunchy almond butter and strawberries. Looks delicious, no?

How about you?  Have you been spreading the almond butter love? :)

I’m Home

A few final photos from Florida…

During our last night, someone pulled the fire alarm in our hotel at 11 PM, and all guests were forced to evacuate. My mom was a bit traumatized while I found the whole incident rather exciting:

All the Florida humidity kept fogging up my camera lense.

The Florida humidity kept fogging up my camera lense.

The next morning consisted of more banana + almond butter in my PJ’s:

n572573890_1965912_3645143_2Right before leaving for the airport, we decided one more seafood meal was necessary.  It was barely 11 AM – fish for brunch?  Yes, please.

Grilled grouper and steamed veggies from Frenchy's Cafe in Clearwater.

I made it home safely last night and was super excited to be reunited with my CD & the pups.  Florida was a total blast, and it was so good to hang out with my mom and older brother.  My goal was to enjoy myself and not worry about the food or fitting in a workout.  I did want to try out a local yoga studio, but I never made it to one.  Saturday’s exercise was my long walk on the beach, and yesterday’s workout consisted of 5 Sun Salutations, 3 trips up and down the steps of our hotel (8 floors), and a headstand.  Perfect.  Back in the day, I would have insisted on getting in a few runs, even if it meant everyone arranging their schedules around my workout. This trip was so different, and my morning hours spent hanging out with the fam. meant more to me than any 5 mile run ever could!

I didn’t get to post yesterday but wanted to wish my Dad a Happy Father’s Day. Love you Dad, and I look forward to hanging out with you later this week to celebrate your special day!

Me and my papa. :)

Me and my papa. :)

CD’s Random Comment of the Day:

In reference to the bowl of broccoli chia protein oats I attacked last night…Are you almost done eating that?  It stinks. Ahh, just like old times.  So good to be home!

Don’t forget to stop by Eat Live Run as Jenna’s 100 Easy Weeknight Dinners e-cookbook goes on sale today.  Go check it out!

Florida, I Will Miss You!

Me in all my morning loveliness:

Like my jammies?I woke up to a full inbox along with a banana, Trader Joe’s raw crunchy almond butter, and a knife.  Seriously, what more do you need?

Jay Robb love. Seriously, I needed him.

OK, so I needed some Jay Robb lovin.

I was still hungry and had one scoop of Jay Robb’s rice protein powder mixed with water.   Carbs + fats don’t usually do it for me – I need some protein in the mix.

So, the plan was to go for a walk and do yoga.  Instead I talked to CD on the phone and then bummed around in my PJ’s while drinking coffee.

Before I knew it, it was time to get ready for lunch.  I was super excited as I had plans to meet up with none other than Jenna from one of the first blogs I ever read, Eat Live Run.

IMG_2562Jenna always seems so genuine and down-to-earth on her blog, and that’s exactly what you get in person.  As far as the food goes, she could not have picked a more perfect restaurant.  We dined at Grass Root Organic Restaurant, and all I can say is Jenna, you know me well. :)

Glorious Greens

Glorious Greens

We both ordered Sabrina’s Favorite Sandwich, raw onion bread with raw hummus, avocado, sprouts, lettuce, and sheeze. Sabrina, I’m not sure who you are, but your favorite sandwich is now my favorite sandwich!  Such a fun lunch date, and it was almost odd to me that we had never met in person as I felt like old friends.  Jenna, I hope we get to meet up again someday!

On the way home, my Mom’s GPS kept barking orders at me.  Question…does your car have a GPS system, and if so, did you name it?  I refer to my Mom’s as The Be-yotch…she’s just so freakin bossy!  To drown her out, I spent 45 minutes on the phone with my precious Polly.  P, you are such a blessing in my life, and I’m so grateful you are my friend. :)

After lunch, I decided to walk on the beach.  The white sand and beautiful ocean water were just too much, and I probably walked a little longer than I should have as I now have a blister the size of my head on the bottom of my left foot.  Oops. Afterwards, we went swimming in the ocean – the water was so warm!  Pretty soon, I was ready for some more food.

Since it was our last night here, I wanted to consume as much seafood as possible. Mission accomplished. Taking HEAB reader Melissa’s suggestion, me and the fam. headed to Island Way Grill. Melissa, you now hold a special place in all our hearts as this was some of the best seafood we’ve ever had!

We started off the evening with the appetizer sampler platter:

Pot stickers, shrimp, and crab.

Pot stickers, shrimp, conch fritters, and crab.

This was good, but a bit too fried for my taste.  I think I ate all but one of the shrimp and a pot sticker.

For my main course, I ordered the salmon with extra veggies instead of mashed potatoes or rice.

This tasted unbelievably fresh. Amazing.

This tasted unbelievably fresh. Amazing.

This weekend in Florida was just what I needed – time with my mom and brother, 2 days of ocean breeze, and more seafood than I have eaten in the past year.  I should do this more often!  Tomorrow, it’s back home to CD and the pups.  I can’t wait. :)

Happy Sunday my friends.
