Stef September 13, 2010 at 11:50 am

Hey,
this year I was the only one around when our cherries were ripe on the tree. I’m normally not such a huge fan that I could’ve eaten all of them so I decided to make my own preserves. So i did plain, cherry and apple and cherry and banana. Cherry and Banana is actually a really common drink here in Germany and another one of the things I like cherries in, just mix 50/50 banana juice and cherry juice..delicious!

HEAB September 13, 2010 at 2:07 pm

Stef,
That does sound delicious!

Maria September 13, 2010 at 11:47 am

Frozen cherries + cocoa powder + vanilla almond milk is one delish smoothie 🙂

jennifer September 13, 2010 at 11:42 am

It’s probably on here 100 times already, but….frozen cherries, along with a frozen banana and a giant handful of spinach (to fool the kiddies) in a ‘milkshake’! YUM!

Kelsey @ CleanTeenKelsey September 13, 2010 at 11:18 am

Oh gosh, I absolutely adore frozen cherries. Probably my favorite way to use them is in a chocolate cherry protein shake, but I also like to put some in a bowl, pour a little almond milk over them and maybe some cacao nibs, chocolate chips or Cacao Bliss. The cherries freeze the almond milk and it is so, so good.

Samantha Robertson September 13, 2010 at 11:01 am

I love using frozen black cherries in a smoothie!

Nikki September 13, 2010 at 10:57 am

Yum! I loveeee just eating fresh cherries by the handful. I also admit that I love maraschino cherries from the jar, but I try not to buy those.

Toby September 13, 2010 at 10:52 am

My favorite used to be cherry ice cream with chocolate chunks. Now that I have eliminated dairy I may need a new favorite.

I like them best dried in granola… but it has to be the sweet kind, not the tart kind!

Shelby September 13, 2010 at 8:24 am

No better way than straight off the stem, fresh and juicy!

Amanda Y. September 13, 2010 at 8:23 am

I like cherries just whole (or in sangria!)

Em September 13, 2010 at 8:13 am

I just discovered I like cherries this summer when I wandered through our local farmer’s market. My favorite way to eat them is right off the stem then trying to spit the pits into the trashcan. (I miss more of then than not, so my cats have fun chasing them around.) Maybe when they come in season again, I’ll try to actually bake with them . . . or not.

Jodi September 13, 2010 at 8:13 am

I love plain old fresh bing cherries! I like to pit a handful at a time, then just pop them in…no worries about seeds!

Katie September 13, 2010 at 7:09 am

I love using them to bake in muffins or just plain ol’ fresh! 🙂

Jackie September 13, 2010 at 6:56 am

I have THREE favourite ways to eat cherries:

1. Fresh. Not when they’re squishy, when they’re a little under-ripe.
2. Frozen and then de-frosted, mixed with Greek yogurt, steel cut oats, and dark chocolate shavings!
3. Shirley Temple. Does that count? Is it even a real cherry? I like the nostalgia of it, plus, wait ’till the HEABlet starts asking for those drinks.

HEAB September 13, 2010 at 7:23 am

Jackie,
Yep, that counts. I grew up on Shirley Temples…hope the HEABlet never discovers them. I’d rather her enjoy your Greek yogurt, steel cut oats, chocolate combo instead. 😉

Andrea M September 13, 2010 at 6:37 am

mmmm! You know your blueberry crumble recipe? (love it, ps) Half blueberries, half cherries = 🙂

HEAB September 13, 2010 at 9:32 am

Andrea,
Yum, that sounds delicious! 🙂

Scott in Ohio September 13, 2010 at 6:36 am

Paula September 13, 2010 at 12:57 am

I’m usually not a huge fan of mixing chocolate and fruit, but I have to say that my favorite cherry eats is Black Forest Cake.

Also, white cherries straight off the tree aren’t shabby either. I went cherry picking for the first time at a local farm a couple months ago, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they had to reconsider their free tasting policy after I had my way. 🙂

HEAB September 13, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Paula,
The probably would have escorted me off the farm as there may have been no cherries left for picking. 😉

Mikelle September 13, 2010 at 12:14 am

To be honest, I really just love plain old raw cherries. Whenever I buy them I eat them in about a day! 🙂

Rika September 13, 2010 at 12:08 am

I like dried cherries in a granola bar! Its sourness contrasts so well with the sweetness of granola!

Laura Duggan September 13, 2010 at 12:04 am

In California, cherry season lasts about 6 weeks during June and July. I spend so much money buying fresh cherries- I like to eat them freshly picked- plump and juicy! YUM.

Kristen September 12, 2010 at 11:22 pm

I love cherries in my daughter’s smoothie concoctions!
Her current fav is frozen cherries, keifer, greek yogurt, and a wee squirt of agave syrup.
We sometimes throw some dark chocolate in for an extra tasty treat.

Her other favorite smoothie is frozen cherries, frozen blueberries, frozen strawberries, a bit of water, and some spinach. It’s a wicked color, but very very tasty!

Rowie September 12, 2010 at 11:18 pm

My favorite way to enjoy cherries is FRESH! Mixed into a fruit salad, or dipped into some chocolate fondu work too though. YUM!

Lynn September 12, 2010 at 10:54 pm

I fell into a deep passionate love affair with cherries when I was pregnant with my son. End of the day, crashing on the couch, hubby rubbing my feets, and a big ole bowl of cherries straight up. So my favorite way to eat cherries? Pregnant! 🙂

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Lynn,
Does your son love cherries now? I hear that kids love whatever their moms craved while pregnant. The HEABlet is going to love cheese and PB Puffins. 😉

He does indeed!!!

Mandiee September 12, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I love either eating fresh (from the Michigan Cherry Festival, of course!) cherries straight up with friends on a hot summer day, or soaking them in Merlot to make chocolate cherry merlot brownies for the adults in my house (not me, though :P.) Thanks for a great giveaway! I adore NN <3.

xox

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 11:47 pm

Mandiee,
Still bummed I missed the Cherry Festival. 🙁

EmberRose September 12, 2010 at 10:40 pm

I love them as a sauce over ice cream, dried straight out of the bag, in a white chocolate chip cookie, frozen in smoothies, fresh out of the bag, with pork….I just LOVE them.

Kim September 12, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Frozen cherries with some cold rice milk on top. The milk freezes over the cherries, yum! I chop up some 90% dark chocolate on top and maybe a spoon full of TruWhip. Heaven in a bowl!

I like putting frozen cherries in cereal.

Maggie @ Say Yes to Salad September 12, 2010 at 9:14 pm

Mmmm my favorite way to enjoy cherries is semi-frozen! I freeze them and take them out and as I eat them they start to thaw, and the best ones are the ones that are half-thawed. Yummo.

Marty September 12, 2010 at 9:09 pm

OMG, definitely Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia, Non-Fat Frozen Yogurt naked OR dripping in homemade cacao-coconut butter-agave syrup! being a Vermont Girlie myself (St. Johnsbury). If you’ve not gone on a tour of the factory outside Burlington, do it! Free samples, cows everywhere! ;-D

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 10:03 pm

Marty,
I’ve toured the factory…oh gosh, by the end they practically had to roll me out of there. I was in heaven. 😉

Bonnie September 12, 2010 at 9:09 pm

Oh man…cherries are SO great (and addicting!) when they’re in season! I have to say, although they’re fun in loaves and mixed with other fruits, my favorite way to eat cherries is definitely by the bagful – errr – handful. So great on their own! But chocolate cherry PB? This, I would love to try!

Heather September 12, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I’ve actually just recently become a cherry lover! It started with my introduction to the Cherry Pie flavor Lara Bars and went from there! I love the tart taste of dried cherries, but I absolutely love fresh lightly sweet/tart taste of Ranier cherries. Throw a few in some fro-yo and you’ve got yourself a Happy Heather! 😉

EllA September 12, 2010 at 8:59 pm

I love using maraschino cherries in my pineapple upside-down cake recipe! I love how it adds that sweet tint of cherry flavor to the batter while cooking in the oven and then I love seeing the red color amidst all that yellow pineapple and cake when I plop the cake upside down onto a plate. Wonderful and delicious! 😀

My favorite way to enjoy cherries is by making dessert! My mom and I make graham cracker pie crust (i.e., crumbs, butter and some sugar), then mix it with chocolate (or vanilla) pudding. Then we top it with either fresh cherries or canned–the canned are better tasting, but the fresh are better for you!

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Kari,
My mom used to make something similar, and yes, definitely better with canned. 😉

Debbie~ September 12, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Kate D September 12, 2010 at 3:13 pm

alanna September 12, 2010 at 2:47 pm

I absolutely love cherries. I wish they were still in season around here so I could freeze some for smoothies. I mostly just eat them fresh and when I received sour cherries in my CSA, I made a mean cherries crumble – it didn’t make it through the night. Man, I really do miss cherry season.

mama September 12, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I luv cherries just plain, popped into my mouth!

Katie September 12, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Cherries straight from the bag, sitting in a beach chair with my sand in the feet (and a little in the bag, too). I always have to pull the stem off once the cherry is already in my mouth. Oh, and spitting out the pit into the sand is a (gross habit) must! That’s my absolutely favorite way to enjoy cherries in the summer.

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 9:15 pm

Katie,
I’m all for pit spitting in the sand – they’re easy to cover up! 😉

Cat September 12, 2010 at 1:53 pm

YUM! I want to go make those cookies now! I love cherries straight from my hand to my mouth. Fresh taste best to me! However, I’ve recently discovered black cherry gelato. Wow!

Elaine,
Why have you not shared this recipe with me before?!? 😉

Becca September 12, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Love fresh cherries! I’m always amused to see how many pits I leave – evidence that I ate way more cherries than I thought! Also, pitted fresh cherries are great muddled (or as “muddled” as I can get them with a fork) with sparkling mineral water.

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 9:36 pm

Ida,
How does one make cherry soup? Would love recipe. 🙂

ida September 13, 2010 at 2:51 pm

My grandmother used to make the best cherry soup, but I don’t have her recipe. I’ve used this one and it’s pretty good:
Ingredients:

6 cups water
1 pound fresh sour cherries, pitted
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon confectioners’ sugar
Preparation:

In a large saucepan, cook cherries with water and 3/4 cup sugar until done, about 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, mix sour cream with flour, salt and confectioners’ sugar until smooth.

When cherries are done, temper the sour cream mixture with a few ladles of hot cherry liquid, whisking until smooth. Transfer to the pan with the cherries and whisk until smooth. Simmer 5 minutes, but do not boil.

Cool to room temperature in an ice water bath. Place plastic wrap directly on the surface of the soup (so a skin doesn’t form) and refrigerate until cold. Serve cold as a first course as they do in Hungary or as a dessert with a dollop of sour cream or whipped cream.

HEAB September 13, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Ida,
Thanks so much for sharing. My goodness that sounds amazing, especially with whipped cream! 🙂

ida September 13, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Catherine September 12, 2010 at 11:23 am

I’ve never been the biggest fan of cherries 🙁 They’re usually a little more tart than I like, but when they’re just ripe enough I do like them covered in dark chocolate.

Alison September 12, 2010 at 11:22 am

Kevin September 12, 2010 at 11:21 am

I love cherries in a smoothie. I use light vanilla Soy, half a banana, some cherries, a few grapes, and lately plum. Usually I freeze all the fruit and dont have to use ice before blending. My soymilk is lightly sweetened and with the fruit I don’t add sweetener.

Patty September 12, 2010 at 11:18 am

I love Cherries… when they are picked off the tree (we had one in my backyard!!), eaten frozen or fresh 😀

Jess September 12, 2010 at 11:17 am

Dried in salads or just straight up 🙂

Kellie September 12, 2010 at 11:17 am

I like cherries on a plate with cheese and crackers. That and a glass of wine. Perfect picnic!

Mel September 12, 2010 at 11:17 am

I have to say, straight up cherries are wonderful by themselves. But I love halved cherries with plain yogurt and granola. Yummy times.

Meg September 12, 2010 at 11:14 am

I LOVE cherries straight-up, or in pancakes. Maybe your cherry pop-tart pancakes?! 😉

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Meg, ah yes, the pancakes. Good stuff! 🙂

Carbzilla September 12, 2010 at 11:12 am

Abbie H September 12, 2010 at 11:11 am

Favorite way to enjoy cherries: Dried cherries either in cookies or on top of salads….or just straight out of the bag. 🙂 Michigan is my hometown, and they have THE BEST cherries!

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 9:38 pm

Abbie,
I know – so sad we missed the Cherry Festival in Traverse City. 🙁

Courtney (greeneyedrunner) September 12, 2010 at 11:09 am

I love cherry cobbler! Tony’s dad made it for me when we first met and I have such fond memories of it.

Stefanie September 12, 2010 at 11:04 am

My favorite way to enjoy cherries and fresh from the fridge. Nothing special needs to be done to them IMO. 🙂

Stephanie September 12, 2010 at 11:04 am

I love cherries just about any way, but there is something so simplistic and delicious about a fresh cherry!

Melissa Forehand September 12, 2010 at 11:02 am

Lisa September 12, 2010 at 10:51 am

This is how I do cherries…

In the vita-mix:
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp maca
1 heaping tbsp sunbutter (or other nut butter)
1 cup liquid (water or any milk)
splash vanilla extract
1-2 cups of frozen cherries (will help determine whether it’s a smoothie or ice cream!)
1/2 tsp guar gum
1/4 tsp xanthan gum

Blend!
Yum!

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Lisa,
Yum, would love to make the ice-cream version! 🙂

Ilana September 12, 2010 at 10:50 am

STRAIGHT UP – and in mass quantities! This summer I definitely ate two pounds of cherries, by my lonesome, over the course of about 36 hours.

Jennifer and Jaclyn @ sketch-free vegan September 12, 2010 at 10:49 am

We like our cherries covered in melted vegan dark chocolate, sprinkled with coconut and then chilled in the fridge. Nothing better than that!

haylee September 12, 2010 at 10:49 am

A Cherry shake with frozen bananas, cherries and bananas are SOOO good together!

Carol September 12, 2010 at 10:42 am

I love plain cherries!

Becki @ Hike, Bike, Eat September 12, 2010 at 10:42 am

My favorite way is to throw a handful of fresh halved, pitted cherries into a rich banana bread before baking. Each bit gets a little burst of fresh juice. Drool!

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 10:43 am

Becki,
Yes, definitely drool worthy. 😉

Chris September 12, 2010 at 10:42 am

Love ’em just the way they are – nice and ripe, eating them while sitting outside on a summer’s day

Jill H. September 12, 2010 at 10:41 am

I love cherries sliced up in my Greek yogurt with some nuts on top! Yum!!

kellyO September 12, 2010 at 10:40 am

Kim September 12, 2010 at 10:34 am

I love cherries in protein ice cream:

– Chocolate protein powder
– Cacao nibs
– A splash of coconut milk
– Frozen cherries!

It’s like Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia, but with a bit more chocolate, AND it’s healthier!

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 10:42 am

Kim,
I like the way you think! 🙂

Stephen September 12, 2010 at 10:34 am

Atop a sundae!!! I love that little addition

Rebecca September 12, 2010 at 10:32 am

Natalie September 12, 2010 at 10:31 am

I love cherries when they are made into a cherry crisp topped with a crunchy oat-ty and buttery topping with cinnamon of course. Yummm!

Sharon Lim September 12, 2010 at 10:31 am

I most enjoy cold fresh cherries. They taste great plain, and sometimes even better with chocolate!

Sarah R September 12, 2010 at 10:31 am

Fresh bing cherries are like crack to me. We picked over 15 lbs this spring with my inlaws and ate them all before I had a chance to do anything with them!

Hanne September 12, 2010 at 10:29 am

Fresh from the tree and directly into my greedy little mouth is my absolute favourite, of course… 🙂 But I also love me some frozen cherries in my smoothies lately.

Heather @ Side of Sneakers September 12, 2010 at 10:29 am

I loooovee frozen cherries in a smoothie!! Mmm! Or in coconut ice cream 😉

zoe September 12, 2010 at 10:28 am

i love my cherries fresh! nothing beats a perfectly ripened cherry 🙂

Yin September 12, 2010 at 10:28 am

I enjoy cherries as they are. I’ve never actually tried putting them in anything, or even froze them for that matter. I will try putting them in my oatmeal when cherries are in season, since I recently started eating oatmeal on a daily basis!

Fallon September 12, 2010 at 10:27 am

I enjoy cherries dipped in chocolate. Chocolate makes everything taste better 😉

Stephanie September 12, 2010 at 10:27 am

I love fresh cherries just the way they are! Or sometimes frozen and put in smoothies.

Emily September 12, 2010 at 10:26 am

Honestly, the only way I have had cherries, other than fresh, recently is the CHERRY PIE lara bar. YUM!

This makes me want to get in on more dark chocolate and cherry action!

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 10:41 am

Emily,
That’s my favorite Lara Bar flavor. 🙂

Danielle (Runs on Green) September 12, 2010 at 10:26 am

My favorite way to enjoy cherries are dried! And if you leave them in a bowl of overnight oats, they plump up 🙂

HEAB September 12, 2010 at 10:41 am

Danielle,
I love doing that with raisins, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried it with cherries. Sounds so yummy!

Shannon September 12, 2010 at 10:26 am

Honestly, I prefer them straight up! Some cherry flavoured things put me right off, I prefer fresh but I always like to try new things.

Jennifer September 12, 2010 at 10:25 am
